Dina Lee Mul- lins was Sally, the young college student posing as the rich Uncle Willie. This amusing situation was planned by two members of Uncle Willie ' s family who were pla yed by Eugene Coomer and Leota Stallard. Darrell McDilda, playing the real uncle, arrived and helped clear up the situation which had offered many hilarious incidents. Others in the cast were Nancy Bolling, Billie Davis, Joan Roberson, Phyllis Murray, Buford Beverly, Truman Gilliam, Robert Powers, and Jim Summitt. This play, pre- sented December 3rd and 4th, was given by special arrangement with Baker ' s Plays. The climaxing achievement of the school year is the spring formal, the Prom, presented by the Juniors to the graduating Seniors. They worked hard together and came out on top. Student Council The purpose of the Student Cooperative Associa- tion is that of creating a feeling of fellowship be- tween the teachers and the student body. It also works in developing self-government and serves as a unifying agency in student activities. This year it has strived to promote good sportsmanship and good school spirit, and to improve the ethical character of the students. The officers for this school year are these: Joan Roberson, President; Larry Arnold, Vice President; Joyce Bellamy, Secretary; and Eugene Coomer, Treasurer. Addington Chapter of the Future Teachers of America was organized in the latter part of the school year of 1957-58 under the guidance of Mr. A. E. Stanley. Beginning with a membership of fifteen, it has now in- creased to a membership of twenty -five. The club has carried out several projects, the most successful of which has been the selling of apples at the home -football games. In addition to this the members have substituted for teachers when it was necessary for the teachers to be away from their classes. The F.T.A. High School Club seeks to enable its members to study and to identify the qualities, traits, and aptitudes which are basic for successful teaching. It seeks to enable the profession to develop selective re- cruitment programs, to offer potential teachers appropri- ate experience, and to achieve and maintain a balanced supply of qualified teachers. Hi-Y This 1958-59 school year marked the beginning of two separate clubs --the Hi-Y and the Tri-Hi-Y which have a membership of 12 for the Hi-Y and 51 for the Tri-Hi-Y. The purpose of these clubs to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school, home, and community high standards of Christian character has been fulfilled. This year the clubs have given devotionals, posted a thought for the week, conducted assembly programs, led the bless- ings in the cafeteria, and co-sponsored parties. Future Homemakers of America During the fall and spring semesters of 1958- ' 59 the F.H.A. has been one of the busiest organizations at Kelly High School. They began the year with a very successful hat show in which they emphasized the hazards in the home. At their Mother -Daughter dinner, they elected Mrs. Harvey Smith as Chapter Mother; and during the football season members of the club sold baked potatoes and worked with the S.C.A. in planning and serving refresh- ments for the football party. In the future the club plans to organize a Wise County federation of the F.H.A. in which several Wise County schools will participate. LEFT: Sponsor, Mrs. Vicars LOWER LEFT: An F. H. A. bake sale. Departments The Distributive Education and Vocational Office Training de- partments consist of students who attend classes half a day and hold part time jobs in the various business offices and stores during the other half. This year there were twelve members in D.E. and thir- teen in V.O.T., most of whom held part time positions in Wise. This practical application of selling and office training, learned in classroom, enables these students to fill full time business positions after high school graduation. Pictured above are Distributive Edu- cation students, Bill Bradley, John Shook, George Gardner, Mr. Wil- liam Bowden, instructor, Darrell McDilda, Judy Stallard, Keevis Orr, Sue Thacker, Hagan Dean, Carole Conly, Darrell Brickey, Gary Williams, and Janis Perkins (not shown). The Indians traveled down to Norton and lost a great defensive game 6-0. The next two weeks were good ones in which they won from Pound 31-13 and topped Pennington Gap 18-6. However, when they went to Appalachia, they were beaten 33-0 in a one- sided game. Again the next week, the Indians fell in defeat before Big Stone 14-12. The following week they took Coeburn 7-6 in a good game. Then the Gate City Blue Devils scalped them 63-6 in a run -away at Gate City. They then came back and took East Stone 26-14 in the Homecoming game. The final contest was a heartbreaking loss to Clintwood- -6-0 --their final 6 point lead being scored in the last fifty seconds of a well -played game. The outlook for the coming year is optimistic since the team will lose only four of its twenty -four lettermen and will have several good boys coming on.
