That Lunsford! Our Male boy! What’s the verdict? She’s got the money, if you’ve We can dream, can’t we? got the time. Is he actually working? Absent Again Cookin’ Sumpin’? Wonder what her ambition is? There’s nothing like beautiful girls! Hi Effie, I read your article on, Women in The Air Force.” Jeanette Adams, Betty Hylton, and Ann F lecher are all taking basic at Lackland. You said in your article that you and Hedda Hopper got your information at Lackland. While you were there did you see any of the girls? You may have seen Stuart or Herb Reynolds, they are both in the Air Force. Our own lazy George is NOW a very, very good cadet pilot. Guess what? Thelma Dean is an F.B.I. agent now. The first case she was assigned to, after completing her training, she cracked wide open. Betty Lou has taken the course of matrimony, so has Peggy Gardener. Jim Flanary is a traveling salesman now and the other day State Cop, Jack Blanton, fined him $100 and costs for speeding in his new Nash he bought from Billy Sproles. Bum told me to inform Garrett and Clarence Ellis that he has charge of Nash sales, since both of them are traveling for a living. I was in the East End the otner day and guess what I saw? On his front porch sat Butch Vanover, he’s married now and as he sat there, propped back against the wall, spitting his tobacco, I thought of our wonderful Civics class. Butch goes to church now, believe it or not, I think Reverend Jack Bruce had something to do with that. Since I need my teeth checked, I’m going to see if Garland Fuller will have time to check them before I go back to school. He may not because from what I’ve heard he seems to really be the dentist of the day.” Midge has had a little trouble with her bones since she has taught physical ed. but yesterday she saw a wonderful chiropractor. You guessed it, Johanna Farmer, and she is really making money. Peggy Belcher is her assistant. Jimmy Lipps and Bobby Kil- gore aren’t working for chicken feed either! Bobby is a civil engineer and Jim is contracting. I haven’t gotten to talk to Jim to ask him what he thinks about Simpson Adams (Republican) our new governor. You know what a staunch Democrat Jim has always been. Oh Effie! You should see Margaret Dale’s new home, it’s a dream and another dream is Ada Jean Hopkin’s. And bombshell of bombshells. Tootsie Elam now has sextuplets. She could name them Eeny, Meenie, Minie, and Moe but she’d still have to find two more names. I saw Mrs. Bill Stallard (Janet Beverly) the other day and she’s still as pretty as a picture. A bunch of our class are secretaries now. Helen Strength, Louise Fields, Joan Deane, Artie Bolling, and Patty Wilson. Patty and Albert are married. They both work, he in a powder plant and Patty as a secretary. Jenelle Bolling and Peggy Anderson are telephone operators. Who do you think is modeling for Macy’s in New York? Of course you probably know more about her than I do but anyway you might not know about her new job. It’s Barbara. She’s one that can really fit in those clothes. I wish you could have been at church here Sunday. Mildred Perry spoke during the Sunday School hour. She has been to India trying to bring a little light to the people there who don’t believe in God. I wish you would write an article about her. If you could interview her I’m sure you would find material that would be interesting to people all over the U.S. While passing the school yesterday I noticed what a dead place it was, so I went to Birch- field and visited our new one. The faculty was in conference so I had to show myself around. After their meeting was over, I was surprised to find myself shaking hands with Billy Joe Stur- gill, principal. He has his own automobile to come to and from school and he has a lovely wife who helps him very much with his work. Marie Walters is rooming with them and teaching up here too. She has the Seniors, poor Marie, if the Seniors of today are like we were. That re- minds me, the year after we left, Mrs. Brantley was sent away for a long rest cure. I wonder why? By the way, I almost forgot about our most important alumnus, Grissles Collins. He is in the Navy. He hasn’t been home but once and I was not here to see him but I’ll bet he really looks tops in his officer’s dress blues. Carma Lee Olinger is living on Coebum mountain but there is a slight difference. She is married and lives on her own farm. I think she must have married a pretty rich guy. Some girls have all the luck. Carlos Carter is the mechanic for that big strip job out in the Hurricane, he’s about the best on that heavy equipment. Jenny Amos used to say that she could do anything. Well, I sure believe it because she is now head cheerleader at U.T. There’s some guy down there that she cheers for all the time. He’s Captain of the team, Bellville Rhae Mason. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you about Creed Beverly. You know, he wanted to be a teacher like Mr. Bartley, well he didn’t do that but he is one of the best lawyers in the State. I saw your picture with one of your write-ups, in TIME. You really look wonderful. When are you coming back home? Try to pick a time when I will be here and can see you. I only have a week vacation. I guess I will go to Appalachia and propose to Tom again, but I’ll probably end up going back to college. He just won’t give up, and I ask him every time I come in. Maybe when he gets bald-headed and has no teeth he’ll need someone to take care of him. Seriously, Effie, I wouldn’t trade anything for our days at Wise High, the wonderful teachers, and the way we said we’d lay out every day if we could. I will mention no names but there are some who wish that they hadn’t wasted the days that they did. Hurry home so we can exchange memories and see our old classmates. Well, I really must close, I didn’t intend to write a book. Write me. Love and luck, Skinny” 1 . Conceited? 2 . Pretty Baby! 3. Prom I 4. Delicious? 5 Huggin’ and Chalkin’ 6 . At least they try! 7.
