BAND The concert band is the most advanced band at Whittier and repre¬ sents the school at all public perform¬ ances. Concert band is an elective subject for seventh and eighth grade students who meet the necessary quali¬ fications. Those students with previous instruction on a band instrument in elementary school are eligible for the concert band. The intermediate band is a stepping stone to concert band. The students in the intermediate band learn the fundamentals of playing in a band and study various musical styles and techniques. Previous training is necessary to enroll in the band, which is open to seventh and eighth grade students. The Whittier concert band has always strived to achieve the highest musical standards possible. With its membership of 28 students the Whittier string pro¬ gram ranks as one of the largest in the country for intermedi¬ ate level. The group is divided up into two classes: one class, which is geared toward more advanced students; and the other, which is designed for students who have had less experience on their instruments. Both classes combine to perform at school concerts and PTA programs. The advanced group has the additional privi¬ lege of performing with the Falls Church High School string ensemble at its concerts, the most important of these is the District Festival on March 26.
