The academic successes of Whittier ' s English team and our student participation in our science fair are to be commended. Whittier’s achievements have been recog¬ nized throughout our county’s school system. The many extra-curricular activities in our athletic department, music department and after school clubs have added to the Whittier student’s Scholastic Life. Our eighth graders leave Whittier with a reorganized and better functioning SCA. Whittier also enjoyed and benefited from its new drama clubs and its first Whittier production. The 1976-77 Whittier year, the year of our ten year evaluation, will be remembered as a fine year both academically and socially. On behalf of Whittier ' s staff and faculty I wish the Whittier student body happiness and success in the years ahead. Glenn J. Muhle Principal. MR. MUHLE Principal MR. The 1976-77 Whittier gymnastics team started practive in November with the project of continuing their show¬ ing in the Fairfax County intermediate gymnastics meet at Mount Vernon High, March 16. Each year the team consistently scores high at this meet. With an even mixture of seventh and eighth graders, team strength should continue through this and next year. High hopes go with the return of advanced gymnasts Johnna Richards, Roxana Ipince, Karen Efird, David Amo¬ roso, John Miller and Dallas Gravette. Mr. Clements, the gymnastics coach, credits the success with the growing interest, schoolwide, in this relatively new and difficult sport. 43 WHITTIER BASKETBALL TEAM WILDCA T TEAM 76-77 The coaches selected fifteen players from the many stu¬ dents who tried out in early November. After several weeks of practice the team took the floor for the first time against Glasgow Intermediate. Whittier led most all of the game but came up short at the buzzer. After two more losses to rival Luther Jackson, confidence was regained with victories over St. Agnes and St. Anne’s schools. The season finale on February 17 was a controversial overtime loss to Glasgow. Thanks to players, cheerleaders, fans, coaches and faculty for all the effort and support to this year’s team. The students in the intermediate band learn the fundamentals of playing in a band and study various musical styles and techniques. Previous training is necessary to enroll in the band, which is open to seventh and eighth grade students. The Whittier concert band has always strived to achieve the highest musical standards possible. With its membership of 28 students the Whittier string pro¬ gram ranks as one of the largest in the country for intermedi¬ ate level. The group is divided up into two classes: one class, which is geared toward more advanced students; and the other, which is designed for students who have had less experience on their instruments. Both classes combine to perform at school concerts and PTA programs.
