In February of 1873 at Tally Ho, North Carolina, Mr. F. Webb was born to Iames Hazel Webb and Kate Russell WVebb. After the death of his father, Mr. Webb helped his mother rear 'the younger children. Since no formal schooling was available, he attended only small local schools and later the Uni- versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Being a Latin and Greek scholar, he taugh while in college to earn the mony to finish his education. He was a Phi Beta Kappa member and graduated in 1898. Two of his uncles founded a boys, preparatory school called Bellbuckle in Tennessee, and it was here that Mr. Webb taugh before coming to Oxford. Mr. WVebb, who came to Oxford in 1907, was appointed Superintendent of the Granville County Schools. He held this office until 1935. He founded the Oxford Credit Union in 1937, and it has since grown to a million and a half dollar organization. In late fall of 1958, he died. Since Mr. WVebb was superintendent when the initial consolidation began, our new school bears his name. A few members of the older generation re- member seeing Mr. VVebb riding in a buggy pulled Mr. John Fred Webb by a blind horse up the dirt roads and streets of Granville County. His purpose was to look over the school system. Since the trip to the northern part of the county took more than a day, he spent the night with friends and started home on the following day. During the time he was Superintendent, Granville County, one of the first to do so, purchased a school bus. Later, however a bus body manufacturing plant was built in Oxford. The lot of Webb School was selected and pur- chased by the Oxford City Board of Education. The approximately cost of the lot, building and equip- ment was 5B750,000. The consolidation was a joint project of Oxford City Board of Education and the Granville County Board of Education conceived in 1960 after a survey and recommondation by the division of School Planning of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. BE IT RESOLVEDU that the new consolidated high school for northern Granville County be named, formally and officially, The F. Webb High School?

Most people think that school ends at 31034 for some people it does. But for our principal, B. F. Sloan, 3:03 is far from the end of his day. Many hours of work after most people go home are neces- sary for Mr. Sloan. During this year, he has worked the Principal MR. B. F. SLOAN wholeheartedly for improvements and progress in our school. NVe wish to thank him for his efforts in making F. YVebb. a better place for students to grow in knowledge as well as in friendship.
