During this year, as a result of the consolidating, we have made new and lasting friends of students and faculty. The annual staff joins me in expressing the hope that in these pages you will find many pleasant memories of your first year at F. YVebb High School. To our capable sponsors, Miss Kay Mills and Mrs. Freshmen . . . . . 65 Activities . . . . . 75 Organizations . . . . . 87 Athletics ..... , . .103 Advertisements . . . . .121 Esther Gillis, the elected officers, and the entire staff, I wish to say a special thanks for their many hours of hard work in producing an annual of which we will all be proud. To the students I would also like to say thank youi' for your co-operation through- out the year and your work on the magazine sale. With these facts in mind, it gives me a great deal of pleasure to present to you the students, the faculty and friends of F. Webb your 1964 WILDCAT. Dedication We the members of the annual staff of F Webb High School Dedicate Our Wildcat to a man whom we love, admire, and respect. It is through his untiring efforts and skillful planning that has made this consolidated school a reality And now with appreciation and pride we dedi- cate the nineteen hundred and sixty-four NVild- catv to our superintendent, M R. DAVID N. HIX In February of 1873 at Tally Ho, North Carolina, Mr. F. Webb was born to Iames Hazel Webb and Kate Russell WVebb. After the death of his father, Mr. Webb helped his mother rear 'the younger children. Since no formal schooling was available, he attended only small local schools and later the Uni- versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Being a Latin and Greek scholar, he taugh while in college to earn the mony to finish his education. He was a Phi Beta Kappa member and graduated in 1898. Two of his uncles founded a boys, preparatory school called Bellbuckle in Tennessee, and it was here that Mr. Webb taugh before coming to Oxford. Mr. WVebb, who came to Oxford in 1907, was appointed Superintendent of the Granville County Schools. He held this office until 1935. He founded the Oxford Credit Union in 1937, and it has since grown to a million and a half dollar organization. In late fall of 1958, he died. Since Mr. WVebb was superintendent when the initial consolidation began, our new school bears his name. A few members of the older generation re- member seeing Mr. VVebb riding in a buggy pulled Mr. John Fred Webb by a blind horse up the dirt roads and streets of Granville County. His purpose was to look over the school system. Since the trip to the northern part of the county took more than a day, he spent the night with friends and started home on the following day. During the time he was Superintendent, Granville County, one of the first to do so, purchased a school bus. Later, however a bus body manufacturing plant was built in Oxford. The lot of Webb School was selected and pur- chased by the Oxford City Board of Education. The approximately cost of the lot, building and equip- ment was 5B750,000. The consolidation was a joint project of Oxford City Board of Education and the Granville County Board of Education conceived in 1960 after a survey and recommondation by the division of School Planning of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. BE IT RESOLVEDU that the new consolidated high school for northern Granville County be named, formally and officially, The F. Webb High School? Most people think that school ends at 31034 for some people it does. But for our principal, B. F. Sloan, 3:03 is far from the end of his day. Many hours of work after most people go home are neces- sary for Mr. Sloan. During this year, he has worked the Principal MR. B. F. SLOAN wholeheartedly for improvements and progress in our school. NVe wish to thank him for his efforts in making F. YVebb. a better place for students to grow in knowledge as well as in friendship. '--I the Assistant Superintendent MR. L. C. Webb Wildcats enjoyed a very successful season. The wildcats', under the direction of Coach Parham defeated Wakelon 25-7, Henderson 12-0, Hillsboro 25-12, Southern 12-7, Southern Alamance 20-7, and Dunn 1-0, losing only to league champs Roxboro 20-19, Henderson 20-19, and Chapel Hill 21-6, while being tied by Northern 7-7. The team scrapped and hustled all the way, proving that desire and determination were all that really counted. The team had four boys to make the All-Conference team. They were tackle Richard Hall, quarterback Tony Oakes, guard Marty Yancey, and halfback David Cannady who also earned a position on the All-East team. Among the other outstanding players were ends Bobby Frazier, lay Perkinson, Donald Warren, tackle Robert Corbitt, guards Ben Barker and Earl Rose, center Fred Forsythe, and backs Tilden Martin, Bill Willis, Kenny Cox, and Charles Barker, Coach Parham and the team are looking forward to another good season with four- teen lettermen returning. Bascb all This year Coach Parham's baseball team is looking forward to a fine season. With improved pitching, Coach Parham thinks he will have a successful season. We should have a much stronger team resulting from the consolidation of the four schools. According to Coach Parham, the strong points should be hitting and fielding, and the weakest point will be pitching. I Basketball Under the guidance of our new head basketball coach, Iames Graham, the wildcats sprang off to a good start this season. The lack of height was the major deciding factor in the outcome of the many ball games. The boys worked very hard during prac- tice. They forfeited many of their pleasures so they could be on the floor learning new offensive and defensive strategy for the next game. Even though the team didn't have a winning season, they learned a lot about basketball. Now that the 63-64 season is over, the boys who are going to play in the dribble derby next year will have two goals to work for- a winning season and the District Championship. The Kittens,' respect every team - fear none. Win- ning three out of eight games they ranked third in the District III Conference. Mrs. Lacala Oakes coached this fine team with Betsy Gentry serving as captain. The leading scorers were Glynda Frazier, Betty Lou O'Brien, Betty Yancey, and Betsy Gentry respectfully. The fine diamond defense fed the ball to the offense who sank a total of 134 field goals. The loss of three seniors could hinder the team, but with a motto of KA winner never quits and a quitter never wins, they expect to go all the way next season. Track Long an unemphasized sport, track is quickly becoming popular. It is different from other sports in the aspect that each player is an individual on his own and has a chance to prove his excellence on the field without the help of his teammates. Coach Graham has an optimistic outlook and thinks with a lot of work the team will make a good record for itself. He is expecting points this year from returning runners Kenny Cox and Iames Horner, and strongmen Richard Hall and Robert Corbitt.
