'Dinny' Is Bewitching On November 21 and 22 the drama de- partment produced Dinny and the Witches by William Gibson. The story revolves around Dinny's search for one thing in the World that is perfect. It is the story of his dream. Dinny rules the world, but finds that the world not only is not perfect, but will not change. Finally, Dinny's dream turns into a nightmare. But from it, Dinny realizes that what he is search- ing for is what the wisest and most foolish men have always known-love. Dinny ...... Amy ........ Zenobia ...... ....... Luella ...... Ulga ..... The story is about the tradition of choosing by lottery one person in the village. Oddly though, no one wants to be chosen. Finally, Tessie Hutchinson is picked and matter-of-factly murdered. The play actually concerns itself with prejudice and its pointlessness in modern society. The Lottery received third place at N.C.I.C. with three A11-Star cast awards going to Sue Abshire, Gail Sand, and Bill Prenevost. At district The Lotteryv took first place and Won the opportunity to com- pete at sectional where it placed seventh. l 31 A 4 . I ' F N, , 32 A. F. The 1970-71 marching season was start- ed off with a bang when the 120-piece Marching Maple Leaf Band again main- tained their high level performance at the four home football games. Leading the band this year was drum major, Mark Lohman with twirlers Carmen Rasmussen, Joan Magerkurth, Brianna Hatch, and Roxanne Pinks. The band presented precision drill and pagentry routines at both pre-game and half-time shows. Performing at the Homecoming Parade and attending the Western Illinois Band Day on Oct. 31 were also the accomplishments of the band dur- ing the marching season. The entertainment and accompaniment for the Maplettes' routine was provided by the Green and White basketball bands. The Pep Band provided the background music at the Homecoming Snake Dance, Powder Puff Game, and all the pep rallys. The Concert and Varsity Bands gave a Mid-Winter and Spring Concert along with an assembly for the student body of GHS. Members of the bands also took part in the IMEA, the NCIC Music Festival, and the State Solo and Ensemble Contest. Also, two members were selected for the All- State band. At the close of the year, the selected members were rewarded for their fine serv- ice and dedication during the year at the Spring Awards Potluck. Board Play D. Coontield, E. Hgwiom, B. DeDecker, D. The girls are learning about personal appearance, income tax, and grammar in the classroom phase. The Office Occu- pations Class COOP is made up of girls working as secretaries, receptionists, and clerk-typists. In the classroom the girls are learning about Various business machines, personal qualities desired by em- ployers, and English skills. The Cooperative Work Training Class CCWTJ, the largest of the Co-ops, consists of boys whose jobs are concentrated in mechanical, agricultural, trades, and industrial occu- pations. All three groups are joined by a Co-op Club, which gives members an opportunity to meet people participating in other co-op programs. The club also takes the members on field trips to businesses re- lated to their classes. Each of the co-op students is employed in a business in the community where they work a minimum of 15 hours a week. C.W.T.: Row 3-T. Walker, J. Klemmer, S. Emmerson, M. Magerkurth, G. Hartsock, J. Awards Each year the Daughters of the American Revolution give an award to a senior girl who is voted by her classmates and teachers to be an outstanding citizen. This selection is based on dependability, leadership, citizenship, and scholarship. This year the award went to Cheryl Beuseling. During her four years in high school she has been vice-president of the Pep Club and secretary of the Sophomore class. This past year she was vice-president of the Senior class, secretary of F.T.A., senior class representative of G.A.A., a member of the physical education leaders program, a member of the student council, an Illinois State Scholar, and an alter- nate delegate to Girls State. Her plans are to attend Illinois State University majoring in physical education. Tom Todd 46 Cheryl Beuseling The Sons of the American Revolution give an award each year to a senior boy who is voted by his classmates and teachers to be an out- standing citizen. This selection, like D.A.R., is based on dependability, leadership, citizen- ship, and scholarship. This year the award was given to Tom Todd. Through his four years in high school, he has participated in band, football, cross coun- try, basketball, student council, track, debate, and was an Illinois Boys State delegate. This year he was editor of the yearbook and Master Councilor of DeMolay. Debate Club and ational Forensic League Varsity Debaters: K. Johnson, M. Gradert, K. Kittrell, M. Lohman, M. Bensenberg, T. Terry, Mr. Johnson, Coach. This year the varsity and novice debaters participated in a wide variety of tournaments from December through March. The debaters also attended the N .C.I.C. Conference at Dixon on February 20. Debate, sponsored by Mr. Johnson, gives the students a chance to parti- cipate in competitive activities while develop- ing logical thinking, research, and public speaking. Along with the many awards the debaters received during the year, Geneseo tied for third place at the Illinois Valley Conference on Feb- ruary 6, and Mike Gradert was chosen as the top speaker at Kewanee on December 5. Novice Debate: B. Meier, G. Zimmerman, S. Anderson, P. Johnson, J . Howard, E. Denison. The National Forensic League is made up of speech and debate contestants and spon- sored by Mrs. Durian. The purpose of N.F.L. is to create incentive among high school students to become better public speakers, hence, to be successful, influential citizens and community leaders. Before gaining membership, the students must participate in speech competition and in community service speaking. In this way, the students may work up the needed points for membership. After gaining the points, the stu- dents are awarded the affiliate membership and then continue to work toward the charter membership. I N .F.L. Members: M. Bensenberg, M. Hughbanks, P. Taube, R. They started off the year by initiating the Green Hand boys, and all FFA and Greenhand oflicers attended the leader- ship school in Princeton. B. Daniels, K. Korthals, and S. DePauw received second place in the Land Use judging contest. Four boys were representatives to the National FFA convention in Kansas City. They were J. Snodgrass, K. Geuns, S. DePauw, and J. Goetz. J. McCracken brought honor to the chapter by getting first place in the state with his essay on weeds. A. Pinnick received recognition on his corn essay. The annual FFA pancake supper was held in December and cleared about 3650. Also, in December the Geneseo chapter competed in the Parliamentary Procedure contest in Kewanee and came out with first place. In January, the local club held a speech contest, and J. Goetz was the winner. Among other honors, at the Foundation awards in February, S. DePauw received first in Beautification, J. Kleinau received first in soybean production, and the Geneseo FFA received first in chapter safety. During National FFA Week, the members had a radio program and a window display to tell every one what their organization does. They also had a parent and member banquet. W. Anderson, President, J. A big dif- ference this year in the Leaflet is that there were four assistant editors and many more staff members. An- other change was that the main fea- ture usually took two pages. The Leaflet had tried to feature stories of interest to the students such as pollution and the student council. It had also tried to keep the interest of the students in the paper so that G.H.S. could continue to have a school paper in future years. V 55 i l Row 3 -M. Kempher, R. Bauwens, J. Gray, D. The Maple Leafs were also ranked No. 1 in the medium-sized schools division by the Illinois Prep Sports Special throughout the year. The Leafs opened their season at home by rolling over Morrison 58-13. Rick Penney led the scoring parade with four touchdowns and Vic Boblett contributed two in the contest. Geneseo made the long trip to Freeport for their second game and came back victorious 24-7. Boblett, Lind, and Hart each scored a TD as the Leafs offensive line did a great job in moving out the larger Pretzels and permitting the ground game to go. Geneseo traveled to Mendota to open up the conference season and defeated the Trojans 42-8. Vic Boblett scored three TDs, Rick Lind contributed two, and Jerry Hart one as the Leafs rolled up 447 yards total offense for the game. The Green Machine came home for its next game with Hall Township and defeated the Red Devils 54-0. Eight players entered the scoring column as Geneseo tied the state record for consecutive unde- feated games at 44. Geneseo went to Rochelle armed with the knowledge that a victory would be a large step to the con- ference crown and would give the Leafs the new state record for consecutive undefeated games. The defense rose to the occasion as Mark Kempher caused an early Hub fumble which Vic Boblett ran in for a TD to give the Leafs an early lead. Steve Emmerson then blocked a Rochelle punt out of the end zone for a safety to give the Leafs a 10-0 halftime lead. Rochelle scored in the third quarter but then it was the offense's turn as Rick Penney scored after a long drive to ice the game. Final score: Leafs 18, Rochelle 12, and the state record belonged to Geneseo. The Homecoming game against Rock Falls was played in the mud, but it failed to slow the Leaf of- fense down. Boblett scored two TDs While Hart and Arnold each scored one as the Leafs won 30-6. The rain followed the Leafs to Princeton but it again failed to stop the offense as Geneseo scored 46 points in the first twenty minutes of playing time to go ahead and win 46-14. Boblett scored three TDs, Tom Nelson contributed two, while Rick Penney and Rick Parrish added one each. Geneseo's next game versus Ottawa at home was billed as the state's biggest game as the two divi- sion champs of the N.C.I.C. met. The Leafs put their 47 game unbeaten streak on the line against Otta- wa's streak of 22 and both squads enjoyed state ranking. Ottawa pulled ahead early in the game, 6-0, but Tom Nelson scored to tie the game late in the first quarter. Ottawa again rolled to the Leafs 7 -yard line but the defense held and turned the game's momentum around to the Leafs. Vic Boblett scored late in the first half to give Geneseo a 14-6 lead at the half. In the second half, Boblett scored twice, while Lind and Gentry each added a TD as the Leafs won going away 42-6. At the gamels end, Ottawa coach Bill Novak paid a high compliment to the Leafs as he judged them, The finest club any of mine has played against in my 24 years as coach at Ottawa. The Leafs finished out the season by defeating Kewanee in the mud 38-6. Penney scored three times while Tom Nelson and Vic Boblett had one TD each as the Leafs closed out another unbeaten season. In finishing the season, Coach McCormick's harriers placed fifth of eleven teams at N.C.I.C. and fourth of thirteen at District. At District, Randy Pobanz turned in an impressive run in winning the crown after leading the entire race. Randy's brother, Dennis, was also District Cross Country champ in 1967. His win at District enabled Randy to compete at Sectional where he finished third for the second consecutive year. Pobanz went on to the State Meet also for the second year and placed 49th of 182 runners. The veteran seniors, Tom Todd, Rick Penney, and Art Nitz sparked the squad with their fine leadership. Throughout the year, the Leafs played some very good basketball against some of the state's finest teams, but their inconsistancy hurt them many times. There were some bright spots, however. The develop- ment of the squad's underclassmen during the latter half of the season showed that better things can be ex- pected next season. The squad also came up with an impressive victory over Rock Falls in their final con- ference game. Although winning only three games, they showed the desire to improve and became fine varsity players. The freshman basketball squad, under Coaches Johnsen and Clary, were hampered in that three of their best players played fulltime with the sophomores. They attended camp at Normal, Illinois where they received two superior, two excellent, and one outstand- ing ribbon in evaluations. They obtained acro- batic instructions from a dance studio to increase their skills. New football uniform additions were purchased, including green leather shoes and matching jackets. The cheerleaders gave a great amount of their time and energy to boost school spirit. They sponsored a victory dance-after the first football game. They contributed enthusiastic new ideas for pep rallies, cheers, posters, and student participation throughout the year. Their eifort, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Curtis, proved to make them a vital part of GHS' sports. As the Class of '71 ends its four years of high school, each student will go a separate way, but each will carry with him memories of G.H.S. Our Freshman year we met the challenges and new ex- periences of high school. Under the leadership of Vicki Kroe- ner, Donna Verplaetse, and Terry Eslinger, the class built their first float, Target: NCIC.', Although the float did not win a prize, it helped the class unify and work together for the years to follow. As Sophomores we overcame our fears and proved our- selves by building a sweepstakes float, Shoot 'Em Downf' Our magazine sales were a great success as we were guided by Don Coonfield, Joan Hungerford, and Cheryl Beuseling. Our Junior year had to be the busiest and the most fun- filled year. The class won a prize for their man-powered float, Leafs' Kingdomf' Between receiving class rings and taking college board tests, we managed to prepare for the event of the year, prom. Bridge Over Troubled Waterv was the theme for the 1970 prom, and it was enjoyed by all who attended. A great feat of the junior class girls was their win over the Sen- iors in the first annual Powder Puff football game. The offlcers of this great year were Paul Miller, Vance Urick, and Theresa Hunt. The long awaited year of superiority finally arrived for the Class of '71 with Jon Gentry, Cheryl Beuseling, and Jim Kleinau as class officers. Our final float, 'iMan Makes Rockets, Only God Makes Leaves was built with great pride knowing it would be the last. The girls again proved themselves by win- ning over the junior girls in the second Powder Puff game, giving them a two-game winning streak. The Grean Machine also continued its winning streak and surpassed the state record which was the greatest accomplishment of the year. As the Class of '71 graduates and assumes its place in the future, it will take with it many memories of high school years. CHERYL L. BEUSELING Vice-President Y, M7, , , JON L. In the fall, many juniors labored hard at building their float titled Defeat Em,', which Won the Sweepstakes Award. The class also went through the agony of waiting for their class rings until December and strived hard to present the Seniors with a very enjoyable and beautiful prom. The year was also filled with much suifering through the many tests which were taken, such as the P.SA.T., S.A.T., AND A.C.T. The class of 72 looks to next year for fun and more eventful challenges.
