McCormick and Mr. Fuhr . Charcoal and Coral . Lily of the Valley Class Nlotto Help Thyself, and Cod IVill Help Thee CLASS HISTORY Bewildered and frightened, we entered in '52, But were soon guided by Criffen and Biilosevich, who were faithful and true, Peterson, Yingling, and Anderson led us that year, NVhile we peddled our Christmas cards hoth far and near. XI'e chose An Evening at Ciro's for our Booster Club theme, Since the seniors laughed, we thought it was a screaml Older and wiser, we were next sophomores, Elected Hadley, DeBliecIc, and Bartlett to do our little chores, Committees worked hard on our Booster Club affair, Chose i'Charm School for it -everyone was there. Rogers and Milosevich helped us that year, And made it seem so easy and clear. Our Prom, Dreamers Holiday , we felt was really the best, Decorated with pixies and fairiesg and we had a good time as you've guessed. Our class rings came, all shiny and gold, Election results were Peterson, Fiers, and Yingling, we were told, Our sponsors were McCormick and Fuhr that year, The junior year was ended, and senior vear quite near. Ffnally, we were seniors all, And listening for the outside world's call. Our senior class play was really a hit, And so was our Memories Booster Cluh, we'll admit. NI'e were led hy YaiiX'oort-n, Duraek, and Cowan this time, II'ith Fuhr and McCormick again making it suhliine. NI'e will leave these hallowed halls, so dear to our heart, As we all graduate and finally partg And as we leave we'll he hoth glad and sad, Never forgetting all the fun that we've had. Friends and teachers, we'll remember all of those, As our senior year draws to a close. C X-,fy 'P SENIOR CLASS PLAY The senior class presented One Foot in Heaven, a three act comedy by Hartzell Spence, on November 3 and 4 under the direction of Mr. Tom DeHaven, the dramatics coach, and lvene Stoneking, the student director. When Reverend William Spence, a Methodist minister, and his family move to Laketon, Iowa, they have their hands full handling an old run- down parsonage and a parish of troublesome, bossy middle-aged women. The Beverend's family-Hope, his wife, and Hartzell and Eileen, typical teenagers, are good, courageous, and Christian. Eileen and Hartzell have many friends, such as Louise who is a pretty girl, Molly, a crusader, Bonny, her brotherg Maria, a Mexican firl, and Letty, a fi f fly girl. . . l-5 l-J-w . n Mrs. Sandow, a wealthy woman, and Major Cooper, a man of narrow opinions, are two of Bev. Spence's biggest problems. Dr. Bomer is a cynical old country doctorg Bishop Sherwood is a kindly just man. Frazer, the Spence's youngest son, narrates the play. Much humorous color is added by Mrs. Jelli- son, Mrs. Cambridge, Mrs. Digby, the choir director, and her son Georgie. THE CAST Bev. WVilliam Spence . Donald Holley, coach of debate and individual events, and Mr. Tom DeHaven, dramatics in- structor. The Squad, fortified by experienced seniors, capable juniors, and a number of enthusi- astic sophomores, produced one of the best records in recent years. The Varsity Speech Squad, chosen by local tryouts, january 23, proved its metal by retaining the Conference Championship in Individual Events, competing in a field of ten schools at Dixon, Illinois, on February 11. Sandra Durack and Louise Van Vooren, both four year members of the squad, were blue ribbon winners in original monologue and comedy reading, respectively. Three sophomores copped second place honors in radio, after-dinner speaking, and oratory. They were john VVebster, Betty Haack, and Nlichael Holley. Lucille YViese, senior, won third in ex- tempore: judy Primmer, junior, won third in seriousg Carol Snyder, sophomore, was fourth in verse. jimmie Cowan was fourth in after-dinner speaking: and Dan Oberle, fourth in radio. Helen Ilaslfs sixth place in comedy proved another soph- omore has promise. Charlene Cillespie. john Yoder, and Lynnette Urs were members who competed but did not place at Dixon. Six individuals qualified for Sectional by win- ning either Hirst or second at the Rock Island Dis- trict. Together with the one act play, The Robe of the Calileanf, these competitors placed Cene- seo second only to the host school for total points in the District. Louise Van Vooren, Lucille NViese, and Betty Ilaack won firsts, while john XVebster, Carol Snyder, and Sandra Durack won seconds. Michael Holley, Judy Primmer, and the One Act Play did not qualify for the next contest. The Cirlis Speech Squad, earlier in the year, participated in the Annual Declamation Tourna- ment at East Moline. Finalists were Lucille XViese, Betty Bee Haack, Donna Bessant, oratory, -Indy Primmer and Lynnette Urs, serious, Louise Van Vooren and Sandra Durack, comedy. This Squad was the largest in ten years and was made up of more than half sophomores. .-Xt East Nloline on March IO, the Debaters joined the six who qualified at District to vie for the Sectional Trophy and a chance to go to State Finals, the highest point in the speech student's competitive climb. Competing with entries from more than thirty schools, Ceneseo speakers com- piled a total of I7 points placing us 5th among the field. The debate team won the conference and the sectional championship. This is the best record the school has had in six years. VARSITY SPEECH PLAY TOP IIUXY: II. O'IIara, Student Manager, j. Yoder, L. Both the band and chorus were quite active this year with a chorus membership of about sixty and band membership of about forty-six. VVhether a Sousa march or an overture was being played, or a Fred Waring arrangement or Bach chorale was being sung, it was music enjoyed by participants and listeners alike. The vocal groups were also active, meeting on a rotating schedule once a week for a half hour practice. In spite of the cold, the band and baton twirlers performed for the audience at the football games with formations and drills. Ceneseo was well represented by twenty-five chorus members and twenty-five band members at NCIC Music Festi- val which was held in Rock Falls, November 19. The massed band-chorus number Once to Every Man and Nation was a thrilling sound to hear. On December 18, the band presented a Christ- mas program to the community in which many familiar carols and songs were played. A giant Christmas card, various scenes, and narration added to the music. On December 23, the chorus presented its Christmas program to the student body and faculty. The traditional T'was the Night Before Christmasi' was sung, and the student body joined in on the many more familiar carols. The District Music Contest was held March 24 at Bova for the ensembles and solos, and April 7 for the band. Among the entries were three en- sembles and nine solos from the vocal department and eighteen ensembles and solos in the band department. The State Contest was held at De- Kalb, May 4 and 5. A spring concert was presented April 15 for the public, featuring a chorus concert, boys' glee club, and several vocal groups, with the band participating. In May the band presented its annual Ice Cream Social, complete with ice cream and cake, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. All who participated in the Music department of CHS shared a wonderful experience and are proud to be members of the band, chorus, vocal, or glee club. PEP BAND TOP IIUXV: IC. Chap man, I.. TRACK The 1955 track squad, coached by john McCormick who was assisted by Coach Nettleton and Haselton, developed into a strong team in spite of its very tough schedules. The Leaf Thin- clads Won four out of six triangulars, and in larger meets they won their own Maple Leaf Classic, placed second at both the Ceneseo Day Relays and Davenport Relays, and finished third at Ceneseo Night Relays. CROSS COUNTRY The Maple Leaf Harriers, suffering losses by graduation last season, came through with another successful season under the guiding hand of Coach john McCormick. The Harriers won six out of eight dual meets, losing only to East Moline twice. The team brought home the second place trophy at the Sterling Invitational and N.C.I.C. meets. Travel- ing to Calesburg for the State District meet, the team brought home second place and a chance to participate in the state meet. The Thinclads placed eleventh in a field of twenty-one teams at the State meet. Donald Sullivan was elected honorary captain. Four new records, established during the sea- son, were by Bill xvlllllllfdifll in the 880, John Carrity in the mile, and in mile relay by the team of jim Little, Chuck Kasnick, Harley Chaffee, and Bill XVahlheim. Perhaps one of the outstand- ing performances was by Iim Little, the Leafls honorary captain, who scored 121 points during the season for a new high. TOP ROXY: J. YanOpdorp. R. Ford, 1. Cowan, C. The Leafs were dealt a blow early in the season when three of Hve returning lettermen were lost for the season and another one for better than half the season due to injuries. The Leafs, always outsized, were small but seldom outplayed pound for pound. A number of underclassmen received experience this year since nine juniors and one sophomore earned varsity letters. Frank Fitch was chosen as outstanding player, and Tom Ingram, most im- proved player. NVarren Hadley, one of the injured lettermen, was chosen honorary captain by his team mates. Lack- ing both height and experience, the team was handicapped from the beginning. The Leafs fin- ished the NCIC with a win over Hall Township in the final conference game. They finished the season with a record of six victories and seven- teen defeats. Marvin Peterson was elected honor- ary captain for the year.
