With The Ropes of The Past, We Shall Ring The Bells of The Future. CLASS HISTORY Though scared and timid freshmen when we entered in '49, We soon decided high school was really quite divine. With the help of Miss Magee and also Fred Calhoun The Christmas cards were ordered so we'd earn some money soon. Roy Wirth was the President, with Yoder as his helperg To write the minutes and keep the money we elected Marlene Miller The program was written the cast was chosen We practiced very hard The Booster Club was School Days in which the freshmen starred Our second year rolled around and now the time had come For everyone to work and earn a tidy sum Miller as the president led us on our way Specht and Neulieb too helped with work and play Our Booster Club that year was gay Club 53 The chorus l1ne of pretty girls was quite a sight to see Our sponsors offered help and watched how things were done They were none other than Hieronymous and I-Iaselton As Juniors we all hoped to make our prom the best And started out our plans with lots of pep and zest Stardust Dreams took lots of work but even that was fun And prom was really beautiful when all the work was done Besides the prom our Junior year brought lots of other things Perhaps the very best of these were our new gold class rings The officers rt was who made the year complete They were of course you know Allen Ioyce and Pete To lead us through our senior year we elected President I-lippler With Littlepage and McClorey to make his work seem simpler We liked the senior play a lot we really must admit The audience laughed at Corllss Archer We re sure it was a hit With graduation our senior year very soon will close Friends teachers classes well remember all of those Last of all we d like to thank all from A to Z Who ve helped to make these years of school the best that they could be Xtl -.1 1g ':7 tt OIII I I2 1 . Speech department's busy and rewarding season began at Rock Island, Novem- ber 8, at the Annual Girls' Speech Tournament. Of nineteen girls participating from Geneseo, the finalists were Loretta Anderson, second in serious, Mary Ann Van Vooren, fourth in serious, Dixie Price, first in oratory, Suzanne Smith, fifth in oratorY: Ioyce Littlepage, second in comedy, and Sandra Durack, ninth in comedy. Geneseo retained its championship in North Central Conference Individual Events at Rock Falls, February 28, with a squad of sixteen par- ticipating. Pauline Reschke and Loretta Ander- son were our serious readers, Ioyce Littlepage and Sandra Durack in comedy, Carolyn Mc- Kenzie and Mary Ann Van Vooren in original monologue, Anita Coziahr and Iames Hanford in original oratory, Carol Reese and Carol Beach- ler in extempore. Our verse readers were Gerald Yoder and Marian Rivenburg, orators, Dixie Price and Ianet Ague, Charles Hippler and Dave Rash competed in radio speaking. From this group one individual was selected in each even to compete in the District Contest at Bradford on March 7. The District Squad won first place honors and advanced to Sectional at East Moline, March 28. Ioyce Littlepage,,Caro1 Reese, Dixie Price, and Charles Hippler won first place honors. Carolyn McKenzie and Gerald Yoder won seconds, lim Hanford won third. Loretta Anderson, winning fourth in serious, did not qualify. The Sectional winners advanced to State Finals at Champaign. If Girls Asked Boys for Dates was the one act comedy selected for Conference Festival and District Competition this year. The play was rated excellent at DeKalb on February 21 and was presented again at Sectional. The cast in- cluded George Kutsunis, Alan Yager, Carol Reese, Carolyn McKenzie, and Lora Lee Chris- tensen. This play was also presented in a special program inaugurated in l953 known as Varsity Speech Night, which featured a debate, eight individual speeches, and the play on Tues- day night, March 24. The Varsity Debate Squad was active this year, engaging in approximately fifty debates. They were in seven major tournaments starting in December. These were held at Normal, Gen- eseo, Pekin, Rock Island tAugustana Debates? Conference at DeKalb, and the Sectional Meet at East Moline. The Varsity debaters were Betty Powell, Mary Ann Van Vooren, and Carol Beachler, who de- fended the affirmative point of view on the proposition, Resolved: that the Atlantic Pact Nations should form a Federal Union. Those debating negatively were Charles Hippler, Ann Williams, and Dixie Price. The debaters made several appearances in the community, and they presented an assembly debate on the Elec- tion issues in November. One of the high points was Winning eight out of twelve decisions at Augustana when the affirmative won five out of six. On December 20, Why the Chimes Rang, a play directed by Carolyn McKenzie, was pre- sented by the Athenian Club to the public and later to the student body. Extempcre speaking is tied up with the study of current events in histcry and English ll classes every year. Participants study a list of fifteen chosen topics for several weeks and finally com- pete in classroom contests. Classroom winners compete in semifinal rounds after school. Eight to ten serni-final winners in two divisions ad- vanced to the finals this year held on Thursday night, Ianuary B. The final winners in the inexperienced group were: Helen White, third, Marilyn M. Miller, second: and loan Lewis, first. Those winning in the experienced division were: Mary Ann Van- Vooren, third, Carol Reese, second, and Carol Beachler, champion for 1953. T' DEBATERS VARSITY SPEECH SQUAD EXTEMP AND DECLAM L ini--1 V55 at MUSIC Music is a medium of the world and of lite, always being present for all to enjoy, regardless of race or color, whether young or old. The stu- dents of the G.H.S. MUSIC department, repre- senting the young, have fun in doing their best to present their music to others, both younger and older. The year 1952-53 was a very busy one. The band and the baton twirlers presented the public with music and various stunts and routines throughout the football and basketball seasons. Members of the chorus and band were selected to represent Geneseo at the Conference Music Festival, which was held at Sterling, November 15. Dr. Brynolf Lindholm of Augustana College directed the chorus and Dr. Alvin R. Edgar, band director at Ames, Iowa, led the band. During the year the band presented several fine concerts and assembly programs. Folks will long remember the spirited marches, popular tunes, and features such as Hey Pedro and Truth and Consequences. 1 - Y .fn The orchestra participated in the Mississippi Valley Orchestra in Monmouth on March 28. Maurits Kesnar was the conductor. The chorus shared in the Christmas program and supplied the music for the Christmas play. Also, they appeared with the band for an eve- ning concert. Chorus members will retain mem- ories of The Sleigh. The senior members of the chorus ended the year by singing for Bacca- laureate and Commencement. This year the District Music Contest was held March 14 at Geneseo. It was a busy time for everyone-our school bulged at the seams while housing some 1500 visiting students. Geneseo had. an entry of 24 solos and 17 ensembles plus the band and mixed chorus. A11 having a part in the band, orchestra, chorus, and glee club have had a great deal of fun and wonderful experiences this past year, and they are all proud of being members of these fine organizations that represent G.H.S. in such a fine manner. xy Tvp Ri,'v'.'f D.
