Our music department has tried to attain certain goals, and at the end of this school year it has proved to be outstanding again not cnly in Geneseo but throughout the area. The years program was very full. ln the football and basketball seasons, the band and baton twirlers presented the fans with music, stunts, and routines. Selected members of the band and chorus represented Geneseo in the Con- ference Music Festival at Mendota on November l7, where Paul Yoder, noted composer and director, led the band, and Maynard Klein of the University of Michigan directed the chorus. ln March the band journeyed to Princeton and Dixon to present assembly programs, and it is hoped this will become an annual event. During the year the band presented a concert, an ice cream social, and marched in the Memorial Day Parade. The orchestra also presented fine programs and represented Geneseo at the Mississippi Valley Orchestra Festival at Freeport on March 22. Fourteen ensembles and twenty-three soloists from the Music Department competed in the District contest at Alleman High School in Rock Island cn March l5, where the school Won thirty-two second and sixty-six first place medals. The State Tournament was held at lacksonville on May 2nd and 3rd, and forty-nine members of G.H.S. made the trip. The chorus was responsible for the presentation of Count Ten, an entirely original operetta written and directed by Clyde Walter and Cora Alyce Santee, which took place April 4th and Sth. To end the year the senior members of the chorus sang at Baccalaureate and Commencement. All the members of the band, orchestra, chorus, and glee club cannot say enough for the fun and experience they have had this year. Music has taken long strides at G.H.S., and the music students are proud to be included in these accomplishments. 24 BAND 111 N 11 x111!I 1 1 1 11 11 11 141 1 1 11 111 1 N111 11111 GRCHESTRA I1 11 1 1 111 111111 111 11 11 111 111 1 1 1 1 1 1 71 1 111 141111: 11. FOQTBQLL After a slow start the l95l varsity football squad, coached by Merle Schlosser and Richard Haselton, closed the season with a tremendous victory in zero weather over the previously unde- feated and untied Knoxville Blue Bullets. The Maple Leafs exploded during this game to gain state- wide recognition, for they bottled up Knoxville's Billy Boe, the leading scorer in the state who was averaging l7 points a game until the Genesee gridders put the clamps on him and ripped the favored Knoxville team 19-7. After beating Knoxville, the gridders were primed for the closing game with Sterling Community, but a blizzard cancelled the game and closed the season. At the close of the season, Buzz Stenzel was chosen by the squad as honorary captain. The Chamber of Commerce football awards were presented to lim King, outstanding back, Bill Hagan, best linemanp Allen Yager, most improved player: Captain Buzz Stenzel, outstanding team player. The Frosh-Soph team had an outstanding season, winding up undefeated and untied. They hauled off the Frost-Soph conference championship as they rode over Monmouth, Kewanee, Bock Falls, Mendota, Sterling, Princeton and Rochelle. Several of the fellows finished the season as var- sity reserves, a thing which points toward strong future teams. The underclassmen elected Charles Emerick as their captain. Coach Merle Schlosser led the grunt and grooanersu through a ten-meet sched- ule, as the Maple Leafs finished second in the NClC conference matches. Experience won out, however, and the Maple Leafs dropped to seventh at the District. The groaners, as they have come tc be known, included a large number of under- classmen on the varsity team, a fact which points toward strong squads in the future. X BASKETBALL The l95l-52 Maple Leafs, unfzer the leadership of Ccach l-laselton, started off on the riqht foot but fell into a Ianuary slump and finished the season with a 9vl3 recorfi. The Leafs seemed to follow a pattern throughout the season. They were Hat home on their own floor, losino only twiceg hut they couldnt seem to find themselves on other floors. The season had its hiqhliqhts as the Maple Leafs twice rolled up scores of over 80 points in one dame. ln the postseason tournament the Genesee caqers were eliminated in the regional by the Rock lsland team which went on to the Sweet Sixteen. The varsity letter winners elected Arnold Curnyn as honorary captain. The froshesoph team was coached this year by lohn McCormick. The Leaflets compiled a lil-7 record for the season, and several were moved up to the varsity at the end of the season. With this experience Maple Leaf fans can look forward to a top-notch team in future years. The Leaflets chcse Truman Nehls as their captain. The men of the faculty won again this year for their second consecutive victory ovcr the sophomores. These men, who are noted for their snappy uniforms, spent hours of drill- ing and practicing before the gamey and after- wards there were long hours of nursing aching joints and sore muscles. They really deserve a hearty round of applause for their sportsman- ship. School Spirit I-Im-rn-ml What do we have here. A yawn- ing contest? Or maybe a fly-catching contest? No! Not quite! The photographer just happened to catch some of the loyal G.H.S. fans with their mouths wide open singing the school song. The fact that their mouths are open seems to point out the enthusiasm with which they sing and that they are ready and willing to co- operate with the cheerleaders in every way to emphasize the school spirit which the G.H.S. fans have and which they have been showing off in the past few years. Lets keep it up and show everybody that G.H.S. has a good healthy school spirit too. Study Hall Supervisors We seniors will always remember study hall and our two supervisors, Mrs. Harmison and Mrs. Parsons, and the kindness they showed towards us. lt was Harrnie with her kindly, eagle-eye watching cur every move whc re- minded us to study or we'd never pass those final exams. Although Harmie couldn't be with us all day, Mrs. Parsons with her gentle smile and kind ways took over the job of chap- eroning during the afternoon. 'We give our thanks to both of these wonderful ladies, for without their help we might not have made the grade.
