DARNALL, A.B., A.M. SUPERINTENDENT University of Indianag University of Chicagog Columbia Universtity IN QMIlDlllDllPtllE54l2lIlAGllIflll4DllNll Through these four years of our lives We have stumbled often and known the need of your guiding hand. We are grateful to you, Mr. Darnall, for your everpresent help and guidance. You have led us by kind and thoughtful patience through this important period in our lives when We prepare ourselves as leaders in tomorrow's World. As We go forth, We will remember and thank you for your wise counsel and gen- tle direction for the youth of today. 2 gig? Geneseo Township High School lIE4DlIRlIE5M71DllRllD r E are standing at the edge of our adventure in the accumulation of knowledge for life, and thus we look out toward new horizons and assume our fuller respon- sibilities. We are ready now to help bear the burdens of the nation and perform to the best of our abilities the duties of citizenship. To us has fallen the difhcult task of helping to reconstruct war torn lands and lift our country out of the chaos of war and destruction to the light of peace and happiness. We must welcome home our disabled, maimed, and blind war veterans and show them a new, richer life. Ours is the responsibility to show all men the way to education for better lives in the future. We accept our task, and thanking our advisers and teachers for their directing hands, we go forward in our work. May this record of our accomplishments these past years stimulate us and others to the performance of our duties. THE EDITOR. 1 THE SPHINX .1946 X55 lIDlIE5llDllNIBAGIlIT41fDlIN1l T is to the hope of enduring happiness and peace that we, the seniors of 1946, dedicate this annual. We have just emerged from a great world crisis, but a greater test lies ahead. It is up to us and those who follow in our footsteps to prepare a lasting peace. It becomes our duty to create new life for the devastated countries and for our dis- abled men, the human wreckage of war, and make fuller lives for all. This task may put to a test our moral and physical strength more than War itself. To the end that the world might have lasting peace and happiness, We set our hearts upon this goalg and to this Worthy Work we dedicate the 1946 issue of THE SPHINX. T. H. S. young, green, and frightened in 1942, and were Encouraged through the first difficult days by Miss Madden and Mr. Reiser. Soon with the leadership of Betty Dahlen, Jim Gernant, and Elizabeth Hanna we Entertained the student body with their first Booster Club Party by presenting The Seasons of the year. On went time, and we entered our sophomore year. Urged on by Jack Biederman, Doris Jones, and Ruth Calhoun, we Housed the interest of the student body by presenting the Heartbreaking and brain racking Truth and Consequences. Entering our junior year set before us the task of Arranging the prom to entertain the seniors. Relentless in our tiresome responsibilities, The class was led by Jim Gernant, Virginia Vandemore, and Miriam B Since the war was still in progress, the juniors United their efforts on a Tour of Army Camps which was Presented to the Booster Club. But still there loomed On the near horizon the Junior-Senior Prom. Nimble minds went into conference, and The juniors Went into a bond of secrecy. From the gym could be Heard the sounds of hammers and busy voices, but still no one Enlightened the mystified seniors who Groped frantically for any available information but getting Only the knowing looks of the jolly juniors. And when the doors of the gym were opened, Low and behold there stood a quaint park! Now the secret was released. America Sings was presented as Only the Junior Revelers could. Longingly the juniors Took in their first wonderful prom. Our last year was entered with the glorious thought of No war, and a normal life was ours. The rings arrived, and we seniors gloriously flashed them Here and there for all admiring Eyes. Our officers, Gerald Brown, Phyllis Kay, and Sylvia Smith, Produced excellent results with our final year. They Reproduced the history of the class for their final Booster Club Party. Inscribed name cards were exchanged, and we Zealously wrote our John Henry's on each other's annuals. Educated and weary but so sadly, we bid adieu to G. T. H. SIIEBIINIHIIGDIIR CLASS IIIDIIIQAW The senior class play, Once There Was a Princess , a romantic comedy in prologue, three acts, and epilogue, was presented the evenings of November 8 and 9, 1945. The play was presented in the fall of 1945 because of the crowded schedule in the spring of 1946. Following the prologue which took place in the Palace Dellatorre at Rome, Italy, the scene changed to the Boyd living room in America, the time being a few weeks later. The Boyd household was the scene of much preliminary activity, preparing for the arrival of the Princess. The Princess arrived during the first act but was not recognized by members of the household because of her modest dress. Knowing she would shatter all their dreams, she found herself unable to reveal her identity. She realized that they had counted on a big celebration upon her arrival. About a week later, however, the anticipated celebration took place when the Princess, fulfilling all their dreams, again came with much pomp. The five main organizations of this department are band, orchestra, cho- rus, girls' glee club, and boys, glee club. As in preceding years, vocal lessons and instrumental lessons were given to any student who was in- terested. At the various football and basketball games, the band made the games more lively by entertaining us with marching, clever stunts, and good peppy music. The baton twirlers also very ably performed and added much to the band's appearance. At the Christmas program, we were lured into the Yule spirit by the playing of the orchestra and the singing of those familiar carols by the chorus. These two organizations also participated in other assembly pro- grams, which are put on each year by the music department. One of the musical highlights of the year was the annual spring con- cert presented March 7. The band, chorus, girls' glee club, orchestra, ensembles, and soloists were the content of the program. Outstanding numbers that evening were the Fred Waring's stirring arrangement of Battle Hymn of Republicn with four hand accompaniment sung by the chorus, and the orchestra's playing of the difficult and beautiful Mission Overturef, This year the District Contest for solos and ensembles was held at Galesburg on March 2. Geneseo came out with flying colors, receiving six first places. Those winning first place were as follows: girls' octet, Lyman Heller, vocal solo, John Ahnert, clarinet solo, Dale Weber, baton twirlingg Don Hultgren, alto sax. The band, chorus, and orchestra en- tered the District Contest on April 6, also held at Galesburg. Then on May 3 and 4, the district winners advanced to the sectional contest which took place in Peoria. Each group elected its own officers. Officers for the chorus were as follows: President, Richard Brennan, Vice-President, Phyllis Kay, Sec- retary-Treasurer, Bill Neuleib. The band elected the following: Presi- dent, Ruth Calhoun, Treasurer, Don Meier. The orchestra chose Miriam Burton as president and Joan Goss for treasurer. Everyone agrees that the music department has added much to the activities of G. T. H. S. this past year. 22 1 fx X 2 :lf P A ' X , 55752 Geneseo Township High School 4 if av I Top ROW: XY. Under the direction and coaching of Mr. Holley, the various squads made excellent showings. The biggest field of speech was declam. On November 17, twenty girls partici- pated in a meet at Davenport. The three finalists were Elizabeth Hanna, Ruth Calhoun, and Melva Thompson. Six boys also made a very good record in a boys' declam contest held January 16. Gerald Brown and Marvin Kleinau tied for second in oratory, and Jim Lash won second in serious and fourth in humorous. The debatcrs attended several big meets and a few practice ones. The affirmative was composed of Lyman Heller, Augusta Meiresonne, and Marvin Kleinau, alternate. Elizabeth Hanna, Wilbur Johnson, and Richard Raschke, alternate, debated the negative. They entered meets at Mendota, LaSalle, Moline, DeKalb, Sterling, and Augustana. The sectional contest was held at Mendota on March 23. The annual all-school extempore was held during the first few weeks of the second semester. In all, there were two hundred forty-two entries from all the history classes and a few English classes. Miriam Burton took first place honors speaking on the topic, Role of the Balkans in World Affairs. Elizabeth Hanna won second place, and Rich- ard Raschke placed third. Other students in the finals were Pat Torreyson, Sylvia Smith, Phyllis Kay, Lyman Heller, Carolyn Davies, Betty Dahlen, and Melva Thompson. Dramatics also played a big part in the speech curriculum. The enrollment was so large that a beginners' dramatic class was also formed, directed by Mr. Rivenburg. On March 9, the play, Happy Journey, went to District Contest at Rock Falls. This tal- ented group of dramatists won the first place banner. The cast included Jim Lash, Ger- ald Brown, Bob Vickroy, Lois Hutchinson, Betty Dahlen, and Darlene Oltman. On March 15, Geneseo was host to the North Central Festival Plays. The beginning dra- matic class had an entry, a clever play called Sugar and Spice. In the cast were Shirley Nitz, Melva Thompson, Beverly Bensenberg, Bill Stamper, and Marvin Kleinau. Other plays, Lily, A Night in the Country, and The Story of a Dead Woman were also produced by casts from both classes. These were presented the evenings of March 27 and 28. There were two squads of individual artists this year. The North Central squad was as follows: Geraldine Torreyson, first in original oratoryg Ruth Calhoun, first in oratorical declamg Phyllis Adams, third in verse, Elizabeth Hanna, fourth in extemporeg Margaret Mohler, fourth in humorous, and Melva Thompson, fourth in serious. The following were in the District squad: Wilbur Johnson, first in serious, Miriam Burton, Hrst in extemporeg Marvin Kleinau, second in oratoryg Augusta Meiresonne, third in ori- ginal oratoryg James Lash, third in humorous, and Marie Sassen, fourth in verse. Miriam Burton won third place in extempore at State Finals, April 13. The Student Senate convened May 6. There were many senators elected from various classes who introduced interesting bills which were discussed by the whole group. Indirectly there were two hundred fifty who took part in some phase of speech this year including extemp, Student Senate, and various programs. Directly there were seventy students who participated in meets, festivals, and contests. It may be well said that the speech department enjoyed a successful year. 24 6552 Geneseo Township High School TRACK I Top Row: Rex Illillikin. foach, ll. Hawkins, R. lleflcrcq, IJ. SclxmiaI1,,fXl. CHEERLEADERS There was one small group of four peppy students who played a very vital part in keeping up the ol' school spirit. These were the cheerleaders. Before each football and basketball game, they stood before the assembly and led the students in fighting yells for our Maple Leaf players. The cheering section at each game was made much more colorful and lively by the snappy cheers which they directed. Much good will between the opposing teams was promoted as the cheerers made a yell for each visiting team.
