We hope, in time to come, this brief memory of our high school days will become a priceless treasure in our storehouse of memories. Throughout the Annual, on the division pages, our artist has pictured for us the three seasons of our school year. To accompany them, she has cleverly placed the important sport of which we think in connection with each of rhe seasons. We of the Staff are of rhe sincere hope that this Annual will meet with the complete approval of its many readers. THE EDITOR. v l 3 The Sphinx 1937 4 DEDICATION More than a century ago our forefathers pioneered westward to this beautiful country and founded the city of Geneseo. The two supporting pillars in the establishing of our city were religion and education. With the support of these two standards, Geneseo has always remained a thriving and outstanding community. Now, however, the first century in the history of Geneseo has passed, and we must turn our thoughts toward the future. Since we, the class of 37 , are charter members of the new century, we hereby dedicate this volume of the Annual to the Future, in the hope that we can carry on with the success of our forefathers. 3 v Geneseo Township High School ACULTY Thefs something kinda, harty-like about the atmosphere When the heat of summefs over and the coolin' fall is here-- -Iames W. The captain was a lady fair, The crew and all were in her care. The captain was Gen Lough by name. 'Twas in this year she won her fame. She led us through our toil and strife And helped us start our trip through life Our first year flew so wildly past That soon our second year came fast. Our choice for captain soon was made And in Art Erickson our ship was stayed. The waters were not quite so rough, But still we did not lcnow enough. Our junior year was busy indeed, And for the prom we worked with speed. Somehow our crew was seldom changed, But captains were not so arranged. jean Lager had charge of our good ship And ne'er once did we lose hold and slip. 'Twas soon our fourth year did begin- The last stretch-One leap to win! Corine DePauw was leader chosen. And friendships then were far from frozen. Four years of sailing was lots of fun, And had hardships had we none. We hustled, hurried, and scurried along Until in wisdom we were cheerful and strong. But thanks to G. T. H. S. so dear That we've enjoyed from year to year. i8l v Geneseo Township High School IQYIQLYN ILXRTZ- Iiviv IIN: vnu' rmlu' mul mwz umv uf lull I flml nn frlrrtlr A , I . liuuwtrl' K'lulr 43 Ilzlsulmll I, RVIIY III-INKJKlIl'l'- Swt-llc SI1u'.v flu' Iu'1'g1l1Iu.rl lllllllllyl tlzv jmIw'l.v. Geneseo Township High School TI-IE SENIOR PRGPI-IECY On the evening of january 22, 1962, Mark Gannon, the star reporter for the New York Times, was hurrying along at a mere 500 miles an hour toward his home town of Geneseo, Illinois, where he was to get an exclusive story on what was to be considered the perfect televisioni' machine. The inventor of this super-human machine was an old schoolmate of his, Clarence Worden. After the two had met and talked a little while about their good old high school days, Clarence suggested that they test the machine by tuning in on some of the members of that fine class of 37 . Thus the fun began, for once the machine was turned on, it did not rest until every member of the class was found. Now I will tell you what they learned on that extremely exciting evening. First they saw Bob Whited, Hitting about in his usual manner, in a night club in Florida. He is a comedian now, and he owes a great deal of his success to his manager, William Snedeker. Next, in Washington, D. C., they saw Dorothy I-Iolmstrom, who is now Secretary of Labor, and Edward Vfyffles, who after 25 years, is the only remaining member of the Supreme Court. They also learned that the President of the United States, Raymond Ristau, has just appointed his new cabinet member-the Secretary of Love -Russell Erdman, who has chosen Mabel Kemmis as his private secretary. After that, they came to Rock Island, the city of women executives. There they saw Genevieve johnson, the Mayor, and Marcella Warnecutt, the Chief of Police- women. And while in Moline, just a few short blocks away, they saw David Busen- bark, Robert Strohman, Lester Peterson, and Wfallace Wiedenhoeft who have, after making their fortunes, enrolled in a school for bachelors there. VVhen in South Dakota, they spied Marvin Wfyffles and his wife, the fonner Margaret Clifton, living happily on their ranch in the great out-of-doors. Then suddenly they found themselves in Africa, where they saw Marjorie Plapp, Eunice Ernst, and Florence Myers, the trio of missionaries, teaching the natives to knit. Skipping back to New York, they saw Ruby Benoodt, who is successfully operat- ing a world-famous school of beauty culture. They also saw Evelyn Offerle, the successor to Irving Berlin, in her drawing room working on a ditty. Ar the University of Illinois, the class was well represented, for Ena McKenney is the instructor of Poetry. Abram Farnum is the professor of the largest class of ball room dancing in the world, while Jean Lager is an instructor in Physical Education. In Cieneseo, Gail Teeters and Goldie Felske have established a home for orphaned Chinese children, and Irene Clementz, the aviatrix, is planning to give all of the children a ride in her new plane. Millie Elling, the famous lady chemist, together with Evelyn Bartz, Leola Erdman, and Ruth Chapman, has just completed a success- ful experiment which will result in the manufacture of fruit-flavored pancakes. Miss Opal Utter and Lenola Hamilton have had some interesting debates on the subject: To marry for beauty, or to marry for money . DEBATE The 1937 season marlced one of Geneseo's most active debate years, with Proposed Government Ownership of Electric Utilities as the topic for argument. Eorty-eight debates with twenty other schools were held. On February 5 and 6, the entire squad obtained valuable experience at the Augustana tournament. Later, there were triangular meets with Pinceton and Mendota, in which Geneseo won two of the four encounters. On April 8 and 9, Arlene Snow and Corine DePauw upheld the affirmative side, and Donald Reher and Philip Hanna argued negatively at the district tournament at Macomb and received fourth place. The aim of the season was to provide as much practice for as many students as possible. Members of the squad and the number of times they debated were: Howard DeBates, Arthur Erickson, and Marcella Oberle, each 4, Richard K1avohn, 5g Arlene Snow, 113 Dorothy Holm- strom. 123 Corine DePauw, 17, Donald Reher, 18, and Philip Hanna, 19. SPEECH A triangular league, composed of Princeton, Mendota, and Geneseo, sponsored several speech contests this year. Each school entered two representatives in each division, making six contestants for each event. In the girls, dramatic declamation, Corine DePauw placed first, and Marilyn Hammer, second. In verse reading, Corine DePauw won third. Philip Hanna and Richard Klavohn were awarded second and third place in oratory. june Oltman won hrst place in the freshmen girls, humorous division. Geneseo joined the State Speech League again this year. At the sub-district contest on hflarch Z7 at Aledo, the following students represented Geneseo: Marilyn Hammer, dramatic declamationg june Oltman, humorous declamation: Corine DePauw, oratoryg Marjorie Bixby, verse reading, and Dorothy Holmstrom, extemporaneous speaking. Since Marjorie Bixby placed second in the verse reading, she competed in the District contest at Macomb on April 9. fwjl The Sphinx 1937 18 GENESEG HIGH SCHOOL BAND The high school band consists of a junior band of forty-five members and Il senior band of seventy-five members. The high school orchestra has a membership of seventy, the string section alone having forty persons. These organizations, under the able leadership of Mr. Clarence Bell, have furnished the pep music for the assemblies, football and basketball games. At the Henry County track meet held in Galva, May 8, Geneseo won first place with a total of 49 points, Alpha was second with 19 points. This is the largest victory margin Geneseo has ever had. Because of this victory, which was the third consecutive one, Geneseo was entitled to permanent possession of the Henry County Track Trophy. The First Annual Night Relay Carnival was held on the well lighted home field, May 15. Because of so many participating, the preliminaries were held in the afternoon, and the finals were held at night. The victory queen, Marilyn Hammer, and her attendants, Priscilla Nelson and Alma Hannon, presented the trophies. Harlem was first with 53M points, and Geneseo was a close second with 47 points. With McKenzie as Captain of the track squad, the team fared well and made a creditable showing at all meetsg in fact, the team had a successful track season. FOOTBALL The 1936 football season was one of the most successful ones in the history of the school, not only from the standpoint of victories but from the large following of fans, who enjoyed both home and out-of-town games. The football season opened with seven of the first eleven as new membersg however, the team was not to be denied any of the success and popularity enjoyed by the team of 1935. This year's team had a greater assortment of effective running plays than has ever been used before. Much of the success of the season may be attributed to the excellent performance of such senior players as Co-Captains McKenzie and DeTaeye, Tell, Swanson, and Hooger- werf. The underclassmen headed by Co-Captains-elect Feldman and Meiresonne were equally as effective in their play as the seniors. The fine spirit of cooperation, fight, love of the game, and the efficient efforts of Coaches White and Magdefrau were responsible for another truly great football team. While the seniors will be missed, Geneseo is looking forward to another great team next season. Sept. 18 Geneseo Roseville .... Sept. 25 Genesee .... ........ B radford ....... M i ss Marjorie Miller l Z5 The Sphinx 1937 THE SENIOR PROPI-IECY fContinued from page 13, Amy Crosier, have been touring the country for the past few years giving lectures on the subject: The Value of the Spinster to the World,'. Among the famous farmers in the community are Sheldon Schroeder, Lyle Henry, Virgil Pobanz, and Bob Sette. Regina McAvoy, according to Bob Sette, is the wife of a prominent farmer near Osco, and has won the Henry County prize for chickens for three years straight. As the magic eye rested on Detroit, they saw the huge Detroit Airport which is owned and operated by Kenneth Tell, Stanley Sommers, Dale Swanson, and Stanley DePauw. They were lucky, for they were just in time to see the huge 300 passenger plane which travels from Detroit to Paris arrive. On this plane they were surprised to see Art Erickson and his band, who provide the music for those who wish to dance. Included in the band are Norman Wlentz, the drummer, and Chet Miller, the pianist. Presently they caught a glimpse of a great race that has gone down in history, for Darrell Miller and John Painter were trying to see which could take the fewest number of steps from New York to San Francisco. They noticed next, that in Hooppole, Muriel Burgeson and Genevieve Eshelman are operating a millinery shop on Main Street. Then as they gave the dial another turn, they landed in Van Beuren, Arkansas, and were just in time to see the famous surgeons, Marjorie Bixby and Corinne DePauw, remove the columbedas from Mary Jane Lavine, Caroline Ristau, and Helen Moline who for some time have been bothered by acute pains in that vicinity. Out to the west coast again, in Los Angeles, they saw Rod and Dorothy, who have since discarded one of their last names. Rod is running a clothing store, and Dorothy is designing dresses. On up the coast in San Francisco, they saw a party of four: Erma Goodwin, Lola Belle Frels, Florence Fredrickson, and Bernice Kaiser boarding a rocket plane for China, to study the fine arts. Again back in the middle west at Northwestern University, they saw Jane Hansen who teaches interpretive dancing, and Genevieve Lough, who is an instructor in Home Economics. While in Chicago, they also saw Oleta Wolf and Dale Goreth who are playing the leads in the currently popular opera: Minnie the Moochern revised. When the magic eye passed over Lake Michigan, it picked up the radio beam of a coast guard cutter. To their surprise they found the captain was Frank DeTaeye, and the first mate was Don Giebel. Among those on the crew were Dale Cox, Russell Hoogewerf, and the ship engineer, Clifton Reschke. Once again the wizard eye took them to another continent, this time to South America, where they saw Richard Klavohn and his wife, the former Helen Kay. Richard is the owner of a gold mine. Then as the machine flew back to the United States, a radio station was picked up, and to their great surprise they heard the new Clara, Lu, and Em -Helen Nordling, Beatrice Parsons, and Lorraine Peterson. In Jacksonville, Florida, Maurita Salzman was found working as a nurse in a f 26 I Genexeo Township High School hospital there under the great eye doctor, Vincent Mock. Lillian Bloomquist and Margaret Osborne are also nurses there, but since each of them has won ten thousand dollars in a jingle contest, they have decided to retire and spend their time on the beach. In Chicago again, they got in a conference in which Winifred Hannon, Phyllis Goetz, Marie Hannon, and Willicene Sand were organizing a women's baseball club. They hope to take the title away from New York next year. In the years that have passed, Rita Tonkinson has been busy as a historian com- piling volume after volume. After the machine was turned off, both Clarence and Mark were sure of the fact that this was a truly perfect machine, for now it was possible for them to see once again all the friends of their high school days. Roger McKenzie. lla THE MUSIC FESTIVAL The Henry County Music Festival was held in Galva at the Galva High School Gymnasium on April 29th, 1936. For the second time the competitive spirit was not considered in the music department of the Henry County Interscholastic Meet. Representatives of each school, chosen by the respective directors, met as a body consisting of about 120 voices. The members of the choruses arrived at 9 o'clock in the morning, and spent the entire day in practicing the musical selections under the direction of Mr. Henry Veld from Augustana College. In the evening, a public concert was given by the entire group together with representative musical talent from each of the various schools. Gilbert Miller played a trumpet solo as accompaniment for one of the boys' choruses. The High School Quartet of Geneseo, composed of William Bean, Richard Farber, Virgil Pobanz and Floyd Black, sang a special selection. Thirty-five members of the Geneseo High School Glee Clubs, directed by Miss Ada Pyle, were members of the Festival Chorus. Girls' Glee Club selections were as follows: Snow Legend Persian Serenade Syncopated Lullabyeu Boys' Glee Club selections were as follows: Sing Me a Chanty with a Yo Heave Ho Those Pals of Ours The Hunter's Horn Mixed Chorus selections were as follows: Open the Gates of the Temple Dear Land of Home Goin' Home Nightfall in Granada God of Our Fathersl' lla C A I.. This unique thriller is a rather new play, first presented in London three years ago, where it held the playgoers gripping their seats with suspense over a plot that really had no mystery to it. All the usually mysterious phases are enacted openly before the audience. Sir Charles Jasper, an eccentric who delves into the occult, is to come into a fortune of two million pounds on his fortieth birthday. To celebrate the occasion, Sir Charles plans a party on the stage of the St. James Theatre, supposedly haunted because of several mysterious deaths years ago. The merriment is interrupted by the appearance of Maurice Mullens, the hitherto missing nephew of Sir Charles and recipient of the legacy in the event of the latter's death. The murderer, who claims to be a novelist, induces Sir Charles to write in longhand what he declares to be a chapter for his new book. It suddenly dawns upon Sir Charles that he is in reality writing a suicide confession, but too late, for he has already drunk the fatal drink concocted by the murderer. With the rise of the curtain on the third act of this novel plot, we are concerned with the subtle and ingenious manner in which the guests, skeptical over the apparent suicide, force the murderer to confess.
