Their first victims were the Falcons of 2 -A Bertie. This opening home victory helped many to realize that the Phantoms were going to cause trouble. 159 As the Season Progressed 38 0 The many weeks of summer practice and dedication continued to pay off as the Phants met their first conference foes, the Tarboro Tigers. Disregarding all past battles with these Tigers, Green- ville handed them a sweet defeat and began to pose a threat. 18-7 Ignoring the temporary No. 1 rank- ing of the Roanoke Elapids team, the Phants invaded Jacketsville with a determined look. Combining a pre- cisioned offense with a briarpatch tough defense, Greenville produced their most perfect game. When the Phantoms left the field, the Jackets and their Coach knew they were stung. 40-0 Things continued to look bright as the Greenville Phantoms returned home to meet a rather new member of the conference. East Carteret. The team helped welcome them to the conference with a clean, easy 40-0 victory. 160 This Is How It Was Done 7-27 The team was not quite the same as a very surprising Washington team man- aged to spoil the Phantoms ' previously perfect record. 35 - 26 Without letting the earlier defeat hurt their morale, the Phants made a grand showing for the homecoming fans against the Red Devils of Kinston. Coach Phillips ' T -formation proved its power over the old single -wing once again. 26 - 14 Traveling to Elizabeth City, the team was forced to upset the Jackets ' Home- coming. It seemed to many, that in order to be in the running, Greenville was fast becoming the team which the others must beat. 161 Win, Lose, or Even Draw 7-13 A victory over the Rams of Havelock would put the Phantoms in the sectionals with first ranked New Bern. However, this proved to be a problem as the Green- ville offense was unable to score after penetrating inside the 5 yard line sev- eral times. 14 - 14 In a must game, the Phants met a very determined Patriot team in Ficklen Stadium. The winner of this battle would capture the No. 2 berth and con- tinue in the play-offs. After 48 min- utes of fearsome fighting by both teams, the game ended in a tie, thus, solving all problems. 6-35 With only one regular season game to be played, the Phants had to win in order to continue playing. However, the keyed-up No. 1 New Bern team was not going to be beaten. The 1967 Green- ville Phantoms ended an impressive year with a 6-3-1 record. 162 JV Football Squad ROW ONE: Walter Gould, Kim Calloway, ftjbba Rawl, Mike Warren, Louis Gidley, Joe West, Adrian Whichard, Travis Hardee, Billy Clifton, Ernest Carraway, Ed Porter. The Baby Phants had the best season in several years. Coached by Mr. Denard Harris and Mr. Nelson Best, the Baby Phants rolled to a 3-5-1 record for the season. After losing the first four games, the team seemed to have found themselves and went on to win all but one of their last five games. The large number of boys to par- ticipate had the desire, ability, and spirit to prove themselves throughout the season. 163 Through the Loop ROW ONE: Billy Clark, Mike Aldridge, Buddy Turnage, Mike Joyner, Billy Taylor, John Crawley, Alex Weimer, ROW TWO: David Stapleton, Danny Hardee, Joey Pridgen, Bill Pate, Ricky Tonn, Mike Harrington, Jim Adams. This year, with a very impressive group of Rose High ' s basketball players. Coach Best was able to develop a team that burned the wings of several con- ference foes, who previously thought themselves unbeatable. The results of such teamwork were hot shooting, good play making, and a tough defense.
