Of course we wondered at first if narrator Proctor Harveris pipe tobacco was hallucinagenic when he pointed to thin air and said, This is Main St., and that is the livery stable, but we quickly learned that everybody in Our Town had X-Ray vision. And we soon realized that Our Town was just another small town where the townsfolk went through daily rituals with invisible utensils, lived in non- existent houses and read transparent newspapers. Yes, we got to know those towns- people well. We witnessed the devel- opment of a passionate romance be- tween baseball star Tom Simpson and prudent student Joan Riouxf We saw how alcohol corrupted church choir director Scott Brown. We marvelled at the lively reunion of corpses in the town graveyard and agreed with Joan that it was the most spirited place in town. And so we watched a whole life- time flit by in Our Town until the curtains closed and we finally understood that life would go on un- consciously in Our Town when living had long ago ceased. tCiimaxed by one heck of a bear hug. These are the things that go into making a successful football team; a team that challenges the odds and proves them false. This was the 1970 football squad. At the beginning of the season, newspapers said Stuartts team was mediocre and did not have much chance for success. The squad disproved this by defeating district schools Fairfax 8-6, and at the time, first place Annandale by a 22-21 margin. However, after two tied games with Mt. Vernon and Jefferson, 2 the team met its only major downfall. Despite the superior effort that was exerted, the team succumbed to Falls Church for the second year in a row. Although the Raiders had to settle for a fourth place district rank, the squadts overall record was something both the coaching staff and student body could be proud of. wt Row 1: Pete Wilson, Gene Frogale. The overall District record of 5 wins-5 losses is hardly indicative of the sparkling perform- ances that were given by individual members, and when more than one player got hot, the usual result was victory. Outstanding players on the senior-dominated team were Steve Gordon, who held the record for most points this season with 236. Larry Hall, a junior, used his gangiing height to the teams advantage by grabbing the most rebounds. Team captain Mark Heacock led two categories with best field goal and best free throw percent- ages. The team as a whole proved very strong defensively as the highest opponentis score was only 84. There is little that can be added when a team posts such a record. The girls, varsity basketball team proved that a strong offense, led by Cathy Wilson, and a brilliant defensive team effort can overpower any opponent, even if they occasionally had moments of heart failure and attacks of the screaminl-meemies. It was the entire team effort that led the girls to the perfect record, unequalled in Stuartts history, and the Northern Virginia District Championship. The J.V. girlst team also had a fine season. Much is dependent upon these girls to provide the varsity with a team next year, as most of the varsity this year graduated. Thus, all of their games were carefully watched to see which of these girls would provide the sparks for next years season. It was evident to all who attended the games that though the varsity record could hardly be improved upon, it can, and will, be equalled next year. ,3th Susan Berger. Stuart Human Relations Council has realized, in part, many of the objectives to which it dedicated itself this year. Interest extended beyond that of just trying to solve racial problems; the council was more concerned with aspects of human beings trying to get along with each other by respecting each others differences and trying to understand those differences. More than ever, the council concentrated on its purpose of listening rather than trying to judge. By means of exchange programs with other schools, they learned that peo- ple were far more like each other than different. The council discovered that other schools had the same tthang ups as we had here. Exchange sessions with the Afro-American Club of Groveton High School revealed this and similarly, the exchange session with the Human Relations Council of T.C. Williams High School brought to light both problems and solutions. Stuart returned these visits and invited other area groups to share in the evaluation and response to such 77 films as Blacksi Views on Race? Some of My Best Friends Are White, and Mixed Marriages . In these sessions, the council was able to improve relations between the races through thought and understanding. Those who were accorded this honor would argue with the last breath they draw that Latin was alive and living in the hearts and minds of those who frequented rooms 110 and 234. But this is only one area in which Key Club SERVES. Throughout the year, members spent Saturday afternoons at the TB. Center, performing any cleri- cal task that was asked of them. During Christmas, one might have seen a cold but willing member accompanied by a Keyette collecting canned beets and pea- nut butter during the canned food drive for the Salvation Army. And, as may be expected, the dead serious club had its lighter moments also. There was a Maid and Butler Day, which turned out to be some kind of a laugh for our usually dormant school, and aided the March of Dimes drive at the same time. The band was also invited to several parades, both of area and national recognition, including the Apple Blossom Parade in Winchester, Virginia. Individually, band members competed for AlI-Regional and All- State positions. This gave Stuartts musicians the opportunity to test their ability against those of other schools for placement in the Ali-Regional and AII-State Bands. Under its new director, William H. Donegan, the marching band made its fall premier at the first football game. Enlarging to a 96 piece band, largest in the schools history, the band performed intricate marching maneu- vers while playing songs popular to the fans. During each half-time, the band presented one concert number while in a stage formation. The marching unit proudly played the Fight song as they left the field in a monogram representing Stuart. t Changing to the confines required of a concert, the band displayed their talent in the Christmas Concert, performing music ranging from the baroque to the contemporary. In addition, talented orchestra members joined the band in certain numbers during the concert. Mr. William H. Donegan, Director.
