foreign language I 4-.414 0 yi Il!l':-1'-PI7 Mr. Ervin crams to stay ahead of his brilliant students. In addition to the words and rules of the different languages taught at Stuart, the teachers of the foreign language department brought the customs and ideas of many different countries into the classroom. We learned not only the language of the people, but also about the people themselves. The department hopes sometime soon to expand the curriculum to include summer studies abroad. But the words and rules are essential, too, and it seems certain that those frustrating little beeps and pauses of the ALM tapes will grind on forever, as will the translation drills and inane dialogues. Hopefully, however, a few students regarded such necessities as not only dry tedium, buf an introduction to fascinating foreign cultures. . , 2, 'Q N i . lf: 'S u v l 41 Al l l e-'-e KS 1 ' :xx f Mr. Ervin Department Head ,-'t LX Mrs. Bradley Mrs. DePriest Mrs. Loftis Mrs. Cercone Mr. Esser Mrs. Peabody Mrs. Condit Mrs. Isakov Mrs. Wilson Mrs. Condit's congested corner. l

Some students claim that the geometrical symmetry of Mr. Rice's ties are harder to define than the Weierstrass approximation theorem. Due to the early start of high school mathematics in their intermediate education, several seniors pursued courses in college mathematics, such as analysis and calculus. This will enable them to follow more advanced studies While in college. . , ,,. art I ,e .11 'r L, Hutchings relishes the art room mess. Lee conducts another public speaking class. Creativity bloomed in the art classes as industrious students poundered out their problems into blocks of wood or plaster or splashed paints on canvas in wild pattems. Experimentation was the magic word that turned everyday materials into environmental sculptures. Art classes studied the history of art from ancient to modem times, cuhninating their study with a trip to the Philips Gallery in Washington. Exhibits from aft classes decorated the halls throughout the year and the spring art show displayed the year's work of the students. , p ruff is .Q-5 Mrs. Kiely Miss Hutchings Mrs. Seidel Department Head fine arts .f. , , we 4'- u gh ' W.
