'Italie' .. ,. f.,....,s..,,.-4 IWO JIMA'S PROUD HISTORY USS IWO JIMA CLPI-I-2l, the first ship designed from the keel up as an amphibious assault ship, was launched September 17, 1960 at Bremerton, Washington' missioned on August 26, 1961. IWO JIMA's original homeport was San During her six deployments to the Western Pacific, IWO JIMA played Southeast Asian operations by participating in over 30 amphibiouslancllngs - While operating from the west coast, IWO JIMA also served as flagship the grounded USS FRANK KNOX CDDR 742l. She was also assignedas the K ship for the Apollo XIII mission. A In May 1972, IWO JIMA departed San Diego for the last time, and by completed the first of ten Mediterranean deployments. In October '1923 H' responded to the Middle East crisis between Israel and Egypt, deploying than a month early and with only five days notice. The ship also participated in HNIMBUS STAR, an operation to clear mines from the Suez Canal. In FebruaryQ1976,1 hosted more than 1200 guests during the Bicentennial Mardi Gras in Louisiana. In June of the same year, IWO JIMA participated in her fourth deployment. . IWO JIMA returned to Beirut, Lebanon ln May provided command, control, and logistic support for the U.S. contingent of s l- t' National Peacekeeping Force. Q IWO JIMA has participated in a number of exercises over the years, STAR 85, OCEAN VENTURE 86, and DRAGO during her tenth deployment to the Mediterranean. IWO JIMA began her eleventh deployment on October 11, 1989. Since missioning, IWO JIMA has been awarded the Admiral Flatley Award for aviation times. She has also received numerous battle efficiency awards for excellence In amphibious assault, communications, aviation maintenance, damage control, missilery, and gunnery exercises.
