It was a busy time for everyone during both visits, with turnover procedures taking place for both the Navy and embarked Marines. Rota was also a replenishment stop for many crew members. With a full service Navy Exchange on the base, uniform items and other supplies were stocked up on prior to getting underway. The post deployment gift-giving period was covered in Rota as well, with any last minute shopping taken care of prior to returning stateside. Tours were very popular during our time in Rota, as many crew members found time to enjoy trips to Rhonda, Sevilla, and other neighboring towns. Tours of local wineries were also available. The town of Rota offered sailors and Marines the chance to get out and enjoy a relaxing meal in a quiet, small town atmosphere. But for those who couldn't get away, the pier-side vendors were a pleasant sight during the long workdays. Ice cream, hamburgers, hot dogs, and a number of other dishes were available within walking distance of the ship. A .1 J I I 'T .D 'W Ll all in mn l. ii il if I. The winter months are somewhat quiet by comparison, but there was still plenty to keep us busy during our stay there. Numerous tours were offered around this beautiful island, located oft the southern tip of mainland Spain. One of the most popular tours was a Medieval Banquet and jousting tournament, which provided all the food and drink a visitor could handle. Besides the tours, wandering around and taking in the beautiful local scenery was a popular pastime, and at night there was never a shortage of places to go to relax and meet new people. When we left Palma, instead of asking what port we would be visiting next, most crew members, were asking, When can we come back? V, M ,QI-Pg A-J 'big' QM 4 A ' sg! Z W9 ju. 3 I i 3 i l ' I - + L .H ll' had IWO JIMA visited the port city of Marseilles from November 25- December 1. The city, adorned with many great churches and cathedrals, is home to Notre Dame de la Garde, a beautiful shrine dedicated to seafaring men. Located along the famous main thoroughfare of Canabiere, Notre Dame was one of the first points of interest visited by IWO JIMA sailors. Visiting Marseilles presented us with the opportunity to experience the French flair for life. The many cafes that adorned the port area came alive each night, as the French people spent their evenings visiting friends there. Those sailors who tried to communicate with the people of Marseilles found them to be very friendly. Although a bit expensive, Marseilles offered a wide variety of shopping opportunities for fashion-conscious sailors. A favorite spot for many sailors was at the sidewalk sandwich vendors, home of smash sandwiches. What is a smash sandwich? It is a curious mixture of hamburger and french fries, cooked and flattened in a griddle oven and served in a French bread loaf. For many IWO JIMA sailors, this was their first exposure to the French culture. But with visits to Toulon and Cannes coming up, it was not their last. Moored at the Israel Shipyards, we were able to get a great deal of work done on the ship with the help of Israeli shipyard workers. the help of the Haifa USO, we managed to stay busy after working hours as well. We were entertained when an Israeli radio station broadcast a program live from the hangar bay, many of us spent a full day visiting beautiful city of Netanya, Israel as guests of the USO, and the Netanya volunteers also visited the IWO JIMA, cooking a traditional Israeli dinner for those lucky enough to be on board. those who didn't get involved with the numerous USO activities, there was an abundance of touring opportunities. Trips to historic Jerusalem, and other points of interest throughout the country were explored by IWO J IMA and Marines. We learned a great deal about our Israeli friends during our stay in Haifa. With its mild climate, friendly atmosphere, and religious significance, it is a country that many crew members hope to return to in the future. - .flier 12:5 N..
