Brown, Jr., assumed command from Captain Phil R. Hawkins. Captain Brown came to lwo Jima after duty aboard USS Guam, and USS Charleston where he served as commanding officer. Captain Hawkins received orders to the Chief of Naval Training in Pensacola, Florida.
