EXECUTIVE OFFICER COMMA DER FREDERICK R. BARTLETT Commander Frederick R. Bartlett was born in Lakewood, Ohio on 22 June 1930. He was commissioned in the Navy upon designation as a Naval Aviator in November 1953. After commissioning he reported to Patrol Squadron NINE stationed at Alameda, California. Following his first tour of duty, Commander Bartlett reported to the Naval Air Station at Pensacola, Florida as a flight instructor. From there he was assigned to Helicopter Squadron THREE in Norfolk, Virginia and two years later to the Staff of Fleet Air Wings Atlantic, also in Norfolk. In 1964, Commander Bartlett reported to the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, California where he completed his undergraduate schooling and received the Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations. This was followed by an eighteen month tour as a Basic Jet Flight ,Instructor at Meridian, Mississippi. At this point Commander ' 23 Bartlett volunteered and was assigned to Helicopter Attack fLightD Squadron THREE in the Republic of South Vietnam where he served as the Squadron's Administrative Officer and as a Fire Team Leader. Upon returning from Vietnam, Commander Bartlett served a. short tour of duty with the ASW Staff of CONFAIRQUONSET, before becoming the Executive Officer of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron ELEVEN. In 1970. he became Commanding Officer of that Squadron and so serv- ed until attending, in 1971, the advanced course at the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island where he also completed and was awarded the Masters of Science Degree in Inter- national Relations from George Washington University. Commander Bartlett reported to IWO JIMA OU 5 September 1972. His wife, Joan and four children reside at Quonset Point, Rhode Island.

Captain Josephson graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1949. After a short tour of duty in USS MIDWAY, he attended flight training at the Naval Air Sta- tion, Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator in October 1950. Following his designation he served with Air Transport Squadron THREE until 1958, when he was assign- ed to the U.S. Naval Academy where he served as an Elec- tronics Instructor until August 1955. His next duty assignment was with Patrol Squadron EIGHT as Administrative and Anti-Submarine Warfare Of- ficer. This was followed by a tour with the Staff of Com- mander Fleet Air Wing THREE at Brunswick, Maine. Cap- tain Josephson was then transferred to the Bureau of Naval Personnel where he served as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to the Chief of Naval Personnel. This was followed by a tour as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Naval Forces, Europe. In 1961, he entered the Naval War College and upon graduation reported to Patrol Squadron SIXTEEN at Naval . l'E'?'lQ.. . COMMA DI G OFFICER CAPTAI JOH V. JOSEPHSO X GJ! Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida, where he served as Operations Officer until April 1964. After that tour Captain J osephson then served as Naval Assistant to the President of the United States until August 1965. He then was reassigned to Patrol Squadron FIVE as Executive Officer. He became Commanding Officer of that Squadron in January 1967. In January 1968 he assumed command of Patrol Squadron THIRTY at Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland, followed by a tour as Executive Officer of USS WASP. After that tour, he attended the Naval War College where he received his Master's degree in International Af- fairs from George Washington University. Captain J osephson was then ordered to the USS PORTLAND where he served as Commanding Officer until May 1973. He became Comman- ding Officer of USS IWO JIMA on September 5, 1973. Captain Josephson is married to the former Mary Ellen Allison of Washington, D.C. They have two children: Susan, a graduate of Florida State University and Peter, a junior at Duke University. 7 i Q S

In 1945 he transferred to the Naval ROTC Program at Georgia's Institute of Technology and Commissioned an En- sign in June 1946. He served in the USS TACONIC and then attended General Line School, Newport, R.I. This was follow- ed by duty in USS JUNEAU. Upon graduation from the Submarine School, New Lon- don, Connecticut he served on the submarines SEA LION, BLUEFISH, and CUBERA followed by a two year instructor tour at the NROTC Unit, University of Virginia. He returned to sea as Engineer Officer of the USS POMPON in June 1956 9-Hd was later Executive Officer of that submarine. In November 1958 he reported to the Lockheed Missiles and Space Division, Sunnyvale, California, for on the job training in the Fleet Ballistic Missile System CPOIB-riSl. As a Test Engineer he participated in the first two submerged launches of Polaris Missiles from the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON in July 1960. Captain Mathews Cthen LCDRJ commanded the sub- marine TORSK when it was called upon for operations during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Following this command, he served on the Staff of Commander Submarine Flotilla SIX in Charleston, South Carolina, and later was attached to the Of- lice of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C., in the Logistic Plans Division. Captain Mathews commanded USS AUSTIN from December 1968 until May 1970 followed by tours as Chief of Staff, Amphibious Group FOUR and Amphibious Group TWO Plans Officer and Assistant Chief of Staff, Operations and Plans COMPHIBLANT. Captain and Mrs. Mathews, the former Mrs. Lenora Dempsey Nolen of Jacksonville, Alabama and two sons, Richard and Nelson Nolen, reside in Norfolk, Virginia. 9
