In February 1945, the American forces in the Pacific were in a commanding position. The United States, by then, had recovered from the disastrous attack on Pearl Harbor to the point where routine air attacks on Japanese cities could be made by heavy bombers launched from the Marianas. The successful outcome of the war seemed inevitable, but no one ever predicted that victory over the Japanese could be attained cheaply. The island of Iwo Jima was a thorn in the side of the U.S. heavy bomber crews. Japanese air attacks on the Mariana bases were launched from Iwo. Also, the island based fighters attacked U S bombers enroute to and from their raids on the Japanese homeland. ...g',- ., 1- ., ., qu,-. 4, vy- L I 1 1 An assault on Iwo Jima was therefore necessary to eliminate these attacks on the bombers and to provide a haven for the damag- ed American aircraft returning from Japan. Amphibious forces of the U.S. Pacific Fleet attacked the for- tress of Iwo Jima on 19 February 1945 with a formidable force totaling 495 ships, including 17 aircraft carriers, 1,170 planes, and 1 1 1,308 troops. Finally on 23 February, a 40 man detachment of the 28th Marines scaled Mount Suribachi at the southwestern tip of the island and raised the Stars and Stripes. A picture of the flag-raising on Mount Surbachi became the famous photograph of the Pacific war and served to inspire Americans ever since. The battle for Iwo Jima was fought desperately until 16 March when the island was finally secured by U.S. Forces. In the struggle 6,821 Americans and more than 20,000 Japanese were killed. It was the most savage and costly battle in the history of the Marine Corps, but the Marines could be proud. As Fleet Admiral Nimitz then observed on Iwo Jima, Uncommon valor was a com- mon virtue. I HISTORY OF A PROUD SHIP USS IWO JIMA, the first ship of her class and the first ship to be designed from the keel up as an amphibious assault ship, was launched on September 17, 1960 at Bremerton, Washington and commissioned on August 26, 1961. She has an overall length of 602 feet and an extreme width of 101 feet. Fully loaded she displaces 18,340 tons and draws 26.6 feet of water. Her turbine-driven shaft developes 22,000 horsepower and yields a speed in excess of 20 knots. Ship's company consists of 44 officers and 526 enlisted. She can carry a squadron of Marine helicopters, nor- mally 20, and a Battalion Landing Team of 100 officers and 1600 enlisted. USS IWO J IMA's originally assigned home port was San Diego, California. Shortly after her commissioning she began active involvement in a wide spectrum of Navy activities. In April 1962 she participated in Pacific nuclear tests, and November of that year found her transiting the Panama Canal for station in the Carribbean Sea in support of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In September 1986, USS IWO JIMA made her first deployment to the Western Pacific-one of six that she would end up making. During each deployment IWO could be found playing an active role in Southeast Asia operations. Other highlights in the West Coast career of USS IWO JIMA were serving as flagship during the salvage operations of the grounded USS FRANK KNOX CDDR-7421 and being assigned as prime recovery ship for the ill-fated Apollo 13 Moon Mission and the successful recovery of astronauts Lovell, Swigert, and Haise. In addition, she par- ticipated in excess of thirty amphibious operations off the coast of Vietnam. In May 1972, USS IWO JIMA departed San Diego for the last time, bound for her new home port of Norfolk, Virginia. Six weeks after arriving on the East Coast she departed for her first Mediterranean deployment during which she participated in the highly successful NATO exercise Deep Furrow and other amphibious exercises. Retur- ning to Norfolk in January 1973, IWO was outfitted with two missile batteries for the Basic Point Defense Missile System, and her fuel system was converted from Navy Special Fuel Oil to the more economical and pollution-reducing Navy Distillate fuel system. During this first East Coast year, USS IWO JIMA received the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy for the most improved ship in the Atlantic Fleet. In October 1973 USS IWO JIMA reacted to the Middle East flare-up between Israel and Egypt by departing fully loaded, over one month early and with only five days notice, on a contingency deployment. Thus began her second Mediterranean deployment. Throughout her history, USS IWO JIMA has been awarded two Meritorious Unit Commendations, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one silver and one bronze star, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, and two Admiral Flatley Memorial Awards for aviation safety. After a short tour of duty in USS MIDWAY, he attended flight training at the Naval Air Sta- tion, Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator in October 1950. Following his designation he served with Air Transport Squadron THREE until 1958, when he was assign- ed to the U.S. Naval Academy where he served as an Elec- tronics Instructor until August 1955. His next duty assignment was with Patrol Squadron EIGHT as Administrative and Anti-Submarine Warfare Of- ficer. This was followed by a tour with the Staff of Com- mander Fleet Air Wing THREE at Brunswick, Maine. Cap- tain Josephson was then transferred to the Bureau of Naval Personnel where he served as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to the Chief of Naval Personnel. This was followed by a tour as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Naval Forces, Europe. Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida, where he served as Operations Officer until April 1964. After that tour Captain J osephson then served as Naval Assistant to the President of the United States until August 1965. He then was reassigned to Patrol Squadron FIVE as Executive Officer. He became Commanding Officer of that Squadron in January 1967. In January 1968 he assumed command of Patrol Squadron THIRTY at Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland, followed by a tour as Executive Officer of USS WASP. After that tour, he attended the Naval War College where he received his Master's degree in International Af- fairs from George Washington University. Captain J osephson was then ordered to the USS PORTLAND where he served as Commanding Officer until May 1973. He became Comman- ding Officer of USS IWO JIMA on September 5, 1973. Captain Josephson is married to the former Mary Ellen Allison of Washington, D.C. EXECUTIVE OFFICER COMMA DER FREDERICK R. BARTLETT Commander Frederick R. Bartlett was born in Lakewood, Ohio on 22 June 1930. He was commissioned in the Navy upon designation as a Naval Aviator in November 1953. After commissioning he reported to Patrol Squadron NINE stationed at Alameda, California. Following his first tour of duty, Commander Bartlett reported to the Naval Air Station at Pensacola, Florida as a flight instructor. From there he was assigned to Helicopter Squadron THREE in Norfolk, Virginia and two years later to the Staff of Fleet Air Wings Atlantic, also in Norfolk. In 1964, Commander Bartlett reported to the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, California where he completed his undergraduate schooling and received the Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations. This was followed by an eighteen month tour as a Basic Jet Flight ,Instructor at Meridian, Mississippi. At this point Commander ' 23 Bartlett volunteered and was assigned to Helicopter Attack fLightD Squadron THREE in the Republic of South Vietnam where he served as the Squadron's Administrative Officer and as a Fire Team Leader. Upon returning from Vietnam, Commander Bartlett served a. short tour of duty with the ASW Staff of CONFAIRQUONSET, before becoming the Executive Officer of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron ELEVEN. In 1970. he became Commanding Officer of that Squadron and so serv- ed until attending, in 1971, the advanced course at the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island where he also completed and was awarded the Masters of Science Degree in Inter- national Relations from George Washington University. Commander Bartlett reported to IWO JIMA OU 5 September 1972. His wife, Joan and four children reside at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. .'a'l:::u.. -at - -A-mx lf- V 'i'-f'if'f'li'51TiZ-iii ' Q im 1 .Q--5' , y 3 I Captain John Marion Mathews, graduated from Meson Academy, Lexiton, Georgia in 1943 and then attended Emory University in the Navy's World War II V-12 program. In 1945 he transferred to the Naval ROTC Program at Georgia's Institute of Technology and Commissioned an En- sign in June 1946. He served in the USS TACONIC and then attended General Line School, Newport, R.I. This was follow- ed by duty in USS JUNEAU. Upon graduation from the Submarine School, New Lon- don, Connecticut he served on the submarines SEA LION, BLUEFISH, and CUBERA followed by a two year instructor tour at the NROTC Unit, University of Virginia. He returned to sea as Engineer Officer of the USS POMPON in June 1956 9-Hd was later Executive Officer of that submarine. In November 1958 he reported to the Lockheed Missiles and Space Division, Sunnyvale, California, for on the job training in the Fleet Ballistic Missile System CPOIB-riSl. As a Test Engineer he participated in the first two submerged launches of Polaris Missiles from the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON in July 1960. Captain Mathews Cthen LCDRJ commanded the sub- marine TORSK when it was called upon for operations during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Following this command, he served on the Staff of Commander Submarine Flotilla SIX in Charleston, South Carolina, and later was attached to the Of- lice of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C., in the Logistic Plans Division. Captain Mathews commanded USS AUSTIN from December 1968 until May 1970 followed by tours as Chief of Staff, Amphibious Group FOUR and Amphibious Group TWO Plans Officer and Assistant Chief of Staff, Operations and Plans COMPHIBLANT. FITCH Colonel William H Fitch began flight training as a Naval Aviation Cadet at NAS Pensacola in November 1950 and was designated a Naval Aviator and Second Lieutenant USMCR on April 1 1952 Colonel Fitch served with VMF 114 and VMA 32 with whom he made an around the world cruise and Photo Recon nalssance School at NAS Pensacola Following a tour with VMCJ 3 as Photo Officer Col Fitch assumed duties as Operation Officer for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Tactical Air Command Center This was followed by a tour as project officer and pilot ln VX 5 at NAF China Lake California Between 1960 and 1963 Colonel Fitch served w1th VMA 311 assumed duties as Marine Aide and Special Assls tant to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy Research and Development During June 1966 he graduated from the Marine Corps ficer In October 1966 he assumed command of VMA CAWD Aircraft Wing Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on July 1 1967 he reported to MAG 12 at Chu Lai RVN where he was lO first assigned as Operations Officer On October 1 1967 he assumed command of h1s second A6A squadron VMA KAW, 533 and during April 1968 he again resumed the duties of MAG 12 S 3 From September 1968 to August 1970 he served in the Office of Deputy Chief Staff CAMO HQMC In August 1970 he reported as a student at the National War College The following year he received h1s Masters of Sclence in Inter national Affairs from George Washington University He was selected for promotion to Colonel during August 1971 and reported to MAG 32 as Executive Officer In September 1971 he was transferred to the 2nd Mar1ne Aircraft Wing as AV 8A Project Officer During March 1972 he supervised the execution of the AV 8A Sortle Validation Test fVers8.t1I6 WHFFIOPJ and on April 18 1972 he assumed command of MAG 14 He was promoted to Colonel on August 1 1972 OD on September 10 1973 he assumed command of the 32nd Marine Amphibious Unit at Camp Lejeune W Command and Staff College and joined MAG-14 as S-4 Of- September 7, 1973 he relinguished command of MAG-14 and W uhna-L-v gktuwlff 3 '11 ,, , . He entered the Naval Academy in June 1939 and graduated in June 1942. Upon graduation USS FLUSSER KDD-3685. As the First Lieutenant and later, Gunnery Officer, he participated in the Solomon Island and the New Guinea campaigns before commissioning USS DUNCAN CDD-8741 in 1945. In DUNCAN he served as Gunnery Officer and Executive Of- ficer in the Pacific. In May 1946 he commenced three years of post graduate studies at the Naval Post Graduate School and Harvard University. In September 1949 he reported to Destroyer Flotilla FOUR as Flag Secretary. This was followed by assignment to the pre-planning for the SHAPE Staff in Paris in February 1951. After serving in the SHAPE Staff for two years under General Eisenhower, he reported to USS ROOSEVELT CCVA-425 as Gunnery Officer. This was followed in August 1954 by a three-year tour in the research Division of the Bureau of Ordiance in Washington, D.C. In September 1957 he reported to USS EPPERSON KDD-7191 in Pearl Harbor, as Commanding Officer. During this period he made two deployments to the Western Pacific and participated in the first Indonesian crisis. Q48 Sea duty was followed in September 1959 by a three- year tour in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, first as the Cruiser-Destroyer Readiness Officer and then, in June 1961, he was selected as Aide to the incoming Chief of Naval Operations Admiral George W. Anderson. In Aug'11St 1962 he reported to the first all-guided-missile destroyer division in the Atlantic, Destroyer Division 182, as Commander. While there, he deployed to the Carribbean for the uban crisis. P9-F' ticipating in the blockade and the movement of Marinf-BS from the Panama Canal to the vicinity of Cuba. From November 1967 to June 1970 he was assigned as Fleet Operations Officer and later, as Assistant Chief of staff for Operations for Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet. HG assumed command of U.S. Naval Base, Guantanamo BB-yi Cuba on June 23, 1970 and began serving as C0mmander Mine Warfare Forces on September 14, 1972- From November 1972 to July 1973 he served as Commander Task Force SEVENTY-EIGHT conducting mine C169-Vance Operations COPeration END SWEEPJ in North Vietnam-' Rear Admiral McCauley is married to the former M195 Mary Caldwell of Huntington, West Virginia.
