In February 1945, the American forces in the Pacific were in a commanding position. The United States, by then, had recovered from the disastrous attack on Pearl Harbor to the point where routine air attacks on Japanese cities could be made by heavy bombers launched from the Marianas. The successful outcome of the war seemedljnevitable, but no one ever predicted that victory over the Japanese could be attained cheaply. , The island of Iwo Jima was a thorn in the sidefof the U.9:fheavy bomber crews. Japanese air attacks on the Mariana bases were launched from lwo. Also, the island based fighters attacked U,S. bombersgianroute to and from their raids on the Japanese homeland. An assault on Iwo Jima was therefore necessary to eliminate these attacks on theiibombersrand to provide a haven for damaged American aircraft returning from Japan. , g 1 - 1 ' 1 Amphibious forces of the U.S. Pacific Fidet' attacked tlfegfgrtressiiqf,-ilwoylima on 19 February 1945 with a formidable force totaling 495 ships, including 17 aircraftvicarriersr, DiBh6S,,l3nd on 23 February, a 40 man detachment of the 28th Marines scaled Mount Suribachi at Mind the and Stripes. Her primary mission is to embark, transport, and land combat equipped troops by means of embarked helicopters, IWO ..lllVlA'was launched on 17 September 1960 at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, and commissioned there on 26 August 1961. She first entered her home port of San Diego on 11 November 1961Q During 1962 IWO JllVlA participated in Central Pacific nuclear tests before receiving orders to proceed to the Caribbean during the November Cuban Missile Crisis. With the Cuban Crisis resolved, IWO JllVlA headed back for San Diego in early 1963. Following overhaul and refresher training, lWO JIIVIA departed for her first VVESTPAC deployment. During the fall of the Vietnamese government in November 1963, lWO rendered aid to American civilians living there. Upon her return to the states lWO JllVlA underwent a regular yard overhaul in July 1964 and firstreceived the Admiral James A. Flatley award for aviation safety. History ol a proud Ship -n- 1- On her second deployment to Vietnam IWO JINIA aided in construction of the Chu Lai military complex and served as direction ship during salvage operations on the grounded USS FRANK KNOX lDD-7421. On her third deployment to Vietnam IWO steamed over 40,000 miles and participated in twelve combat assault operations. IWO JllVlA's fourth WESTPAC cruise began in late 1967 and included eight more amphibious assaults against the enemy in Vietnam. She was also instrumental in rendering aid during the Tet Offensive in February 1968. IWO JINIA returned in October 1969 from her fifth WESTPAC deployment during which she participated in 5 amphibious operations. She returned to San Diego with 1800 marines as part of President Nixon's Vietnam redeployment plan. After several months of upkeep in San Diego, IWO JIMA was designated as the Primary Recovery Ship for the Apollo 13 moon landing mission. The ship departed San Diego on lVlarch 20, 1970 bound for the recovery area in the South Pacific. While the world watched on live television, on April 17, IWO JIMA picked up astronauts Lovell, Swigert, and Haise after their mission was aborted due to an accident in deep space. Upon her return to San Diego in lVlay, IWO JINIA completed Refresher Training, and Amphibious Training in preparation for the forthcoming deployment. On November 2, 1970 IWO JINIA departed for her sixth deployment to the Western Pacific. 4 ,..g.,.., -4 , ..'...N1-ef-2. .. . wrt' V Q '-- 1...w-,Q ,Qi-f U- ' V N... T ,S-Q 1-,,... 4. ,.,,. fs V- ,. GADDIS, USN, Commander of Pacific Amphibious Forces, was the guest speaker at the change of command ceremony in which Captain Wycliffe D. TOOLE, Jr., USN relieved Captain Leland E. KIRKEMO, USN as Commanding Officer of the USS IWO JIMA ILPH-21. The change of command ceremony was an unusual one, perhaps unique among US Navy ships. The normal ceremony, with all hands drawn up in smart ranks in the bright sunshine of the flight deck, could not be held due to IWO's operational committments that kept both ship and crew ready for instant action in a combat support role. The change of command ceremony was broadcast to all hands over the IWO's closed-circuit TV system. The TV system, normally used for shipboard training lectures and nightly enter- tainment, served as an admirable vehicle as the ceremony's principals in the TV studio were viewed by the crew in offices, lounges, and berthing compartments throughout the ship. 8 ,Q if vm., in 1 Commander David H. They became experts at connecting external supply loads to the belly of hovering helos, storing ammuni- tion and other supplies aboard ship, utilizing the mini- mum amount of space to store the maximum amount of cargo and acting as flight deck guides in loading Marine troops aboard the assault helos. 23 1 lifm W' Wx I T rw l Q.. w M my ...R VJ? f A L Q I 1 1 S I R fi, gg 1 H. Navigation Navigation Navigation if Navigating is the science that enables the ship to determine her position and be guided safely from one point to another. It is a science performed by our Quartermasters and it is composed of computing sunrise and sunset for each day of the year, determining the time, height and speed of tides and currents for each port the ship enters, maintaining a written record of all events occurring onboard the ship from commissioning to decommissioning, determining the error in the ship's gyro, steering the ship in restricted waters and along- side other ships, correcting the ship's charts and sea- way publications, and keeping the ship's 150 clocks wound and set to the correct time. This newly formed department, unique among LPH's, also oversees all the ship's tow vehicles, fork- lifts and other ship's vehicles. The ship's organic helo, Gator Two, is one of their main concerns because she is the bearer of the ship's mail. ln that regard, the men at AllVlD could also be found as crewmen for Gator . The forecastle, the fantail, paint locker, ship's boats, sail loft, boatswain's locker, the port and starboard side of the ship, B and A crane, stores elevator, the boat crews, lines one through ten, and many more spaces than men - these are their responsi- bilities. The seamen and boatswains of Deck Depart- ment are really all purpose men, capable and re- quired to handle all those duties and stand watches besides. They steer our ship, look through the binocu- lars, run messages for the OOD, during every hour of the day at sea. FOX Division operates and maintains lWO's four twin 3 !5O guns that make up the ship's weapons system. lt is also in charge of the fire control system for the guns and keeping that precision gear in the most workable readiness. The division's men also stand bridge watches and, of course, man the gun mounts during G.O. ,,,1t- 7 3 ., lim? B Division operates and maintains the ship's boilers and related equipment. lt is these men who provide lWO with the steam to get the ship where it has to go. ln spite of ruptured tubes in both boilers, they still did it. Not only do they stand boiler watches, but they must also clean firesides and watersides, store all fuel and manage the transfer of fuel and water. Main propulsion machinery is M Division's baby, entailing the care and feeding of the massive engine that drives this 18,000 ton ship. The complex power network that these men oversee includes an array of evaps, condensers, pumps linked by miles of piping and tubes. E Division handles the electrical and interior com- munications equipment of the ship. These men keep the ship's telephone system, the 1, 3, 5, 21, 24, etc. MC systems, and all amplifying gear in good order. A d 'ust to show how simple a job all that is, those fl l men handle the generators, auxiliaries, and switch b ards rinding out enough electrical power to light a 0 Q small city. They get to sit through all those great movies, night after night, as projectionists too. Damage Control Central, plus the shrpfitter and r enter shops comprise R Division. The principal ca p concern of these men is for the integrity, safety and air of the ship's hull and internal structure. The rep skills of these men is wide-ranging, from building cabinets to handling disasters. They make up the D.C. and Firecracker Teams which are so essential to safety and good repair. Exclude all that has been m ou still have an enormous amount of machinery left Y over. Machinist Mates, Machinery Flepairmen, and En inemen make up A Division which has responsi- Q bility for all the ship's auxiliary equipment. Keeping the ship cool in the South China Sea, warm in Okinawa, entioned before and the rant aircraft ele- milling new parts, maintaining g vator machinery, keeping the diesels in working order, sustaining the steering gear through constant use - all the skills fall under A Division. 83 'T i 5 1 X WN 51. 3 C 4529 :Y 7 1 W X I- h L. . . 1, bu ,x 4 .V r E Q A gi L j 5... One of the ways of doing this is to divide the ship into port and starboard watches. This is how it works. Let's say port personnel have the first watch. What they do is take chains or heavy cables and drag them along the decks over the heads of the starboard-watch people who are trying to sleep. The port watch does this for four hours until it is relieved by the starboard-watch people who start hammering on the decks over the cabins where the port watch is trying to sleep. In four hours the starboard watch is relieved and this gives the port watch a chance to start up the helo engines over the heads of the starboard watch. When the starboard watch comes on again it turns up the Tillie, which, below decks, sounds like depth charges going off and keeps the port watch hugging the bulkheads. If for some reason one watch fails to keep the other awake, general quarters is sounded and that means EVERYONE has to go to his station. Since all anyone would want out of life on the USS IWO JIMA is some sleep, nobody has a chance to think about anything else, and this is why the helicopter carrier would be considered a happy ship. Actually, the biggest mistake a visitor could make on the IWO is to ask somebody what certain instruments are for - because they'll tell you. I made the mistake of wandering into the Combat Information Center, which is a darkened room where men are staring into all sorts of beeping scopes, pushing red buttons, and talking quietly into telephones to other mysterious parts of the ship. ' I suppose all this stuff is top secret? , I asked hopefully of the officer in charge. On the contrary, the officer said, l would be happy to explain it to you. Here you have the air scope, which gives the air picture on the air status board, and there you have the surface scope, which gives the picture on the surface status board. Now over here you have the three-sector bogey picture handled by three air scopemen. The sector is watched by a CIC control officer who will assign an appropriate designation at which time the air-control scope con- troller then takes over a CAP to attack and then scratch it. If the CAP splashes the bogey, the CIC officer scratches the bogey on the air picture. But if he doesn't splash the bogey, we set Condition Red, which alerts gunnery and gives them the bearing and angles at ten o'cIock. That's mighty interesting, I said. But it sort of takes the fun out of war, doesn't it? The officer in charge moved on to the Planned Position Indicator, and I escaped through a Fire Control Umbrella into the chief petty officers mess, where I was invited for lunch. I told the chiefs I had just seen some veryintricate machinery in the CIC Room but I didn't know if I could write about it or not. There is only one top-secret machine aboard this here carrier, one of the chiefs drawled, and that's not topside but below in the laundry. The Navy has perfected a new laundry mangling machine which has a powered lawn mower inside of it so it can cut up your clothes in thirty seconds. Under the old system the Navy Iaundrymen had to tear your clothes by hand and that took time. Also, every once in a while they left a button on your shirt by mistake. But with the new Anti-Laundry Detergent Missile you don't get back any buttons at all. What happens to the buttons? I asked. They're used by the machine to shoot holes in your socks.
