H -nf L-- Q.-ff I-1 1' at I lb- ni.. 19-1 IL. ,av Commander Fred Hugh Thorne was born 15 August 1915 in San Francisco. He graduated from Sequoia Union High School in Redwood City, California, in 1932. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March 1935. His first ship board duty was in the USS VESTAL and following this the USS YORKTOWN. At the outbreak of World War II, Commander Thorne was commissioned as Ensign, and remained aboard the BLACK HAWK as Repair Officer. From April of 1944 to February of 1945 he served with the training command in Seattle and was assigned to the training of APA crews. Upon leaving Seattle he returned to sea and served in the engineering department of the following ships: the MONTICELLO, EUROPA, CONECUH, and the ALLAGASH. From 1947 until June 1949 the Commander attended Oregon State College. He became a member of the PHI ETA SIGMA, national scholastic honorary fraternity and graduated with honors. He, then, entered the line school at Newport, Rhode Island, where he graduated with distinction. In ,lune 1950 Commander Thorne was assigned as Operations Officer aboard the USS PURVIS, six months later he became the Operations Officer of Destroyer Squadron FOUR. Later found him as the Executive Officer of the USS WEEKS. During this duty, he participated in the rescue of Captain Kurt Carlson, master of the SS FLYING ENTERPRISE. After sea duty, he attended the special weapons course at Sandia Base in California. Then was assigned as Operations Officer of the Clarksville and Sandia Bases. Returning to sea in August 1955, Commander Thorne was assigned as Com- manding Officer of the USS LAWS. Prior to arriving to the USS IWO ,IIMA as Executive Officer, he was Staff Officer in the Division of Military Application, Atomic Energy Commission, Washington, D.C. Commander Thorne holds the China Service Medal I Pre World War IU, American Defense Medal fFleetj, Asiatic Theatre fStar for Battle of the ,lava Seal, American Theatre, European Theatre, Victory Medal, Occupation and Philippine Defense Medals. He is married to the former Estelle Woods of Redwood City. They have two children: Donna 24 and Frederick 12.
