L. SHOOK Superintendent? Message It seems certain that the next yearbook to be published by our school will be done in a completely new environment. The present volume both turns to the future and marks the closing of an era - an era which, even with its imperfections and inade- quacies, was still an era of very commendable accomplishments and achievements, especially when viewed against the unimpres- sive background of physical plant and facilities. It is not an emp- ty boast to assert that the end products of our educational efforts have compared most favorably with those of schools whose general equipment and environment far excelled ours. Like Janus, the Roman god of two faces, this volume of THE CHIEFTAIN looks both backward and forward. In retrospect, it symbolizes the old familiar places and things, which, though out- dated, awake a degree of nostalgia and endearment with the re- alization that they are soon to be gone forever. But in prospect - in the forward look - which is far more sig- nificant, it points to the enchanting possibilities that lie ahead: new classrooms, improved and extended facilities, more and bet- ter equipment, wider and greater opportunities to prepare for richer service in a full life. The old order changeth, yielding no place to new . . . And so this volume of THE CHIEFTAIN should carry with it a ringing challenge for new visions, higher standards, increased industry, greater efficiency -in short, total educational results heightened and broadened to keep pace with the wonderful new outlook the immediate future offers. N , if M, 5 The B team had a good season - lots of victories, few losses - and prog- ressed to the finals of the county tourney, where they fell short by a little. Their splendid sportsmanship and fine coaching made them an excellent ball club. The Varsity boys enjoyed a great season and added a much desired trophy to our collection - county championship. They fought through to the semi-finals of the sub -district tournament, with a fine record, to meet Tupelo. They were defeated and moved on to the district elimination in second place. Defeat was handed to Shannon by the Chieftains in the first round, but Booneville out- dribbled them in the second round. The prime factors in the success of this ball club was the superb teamwork, timely ball handling, and deadly set shooting. The Chieftains are to be congratulated on a job well done. MR.
