Mississippi -y Volume XI N w , W .. , .V W, , H , , ,',. f, ,.-', .n,.,,,, , , ..,,'L w,.11Mkm., Dedication It is with 1ove and esteem that we, The Chieftain Staff, dedicate this, the 1959 Volume, to Mr. Brison Mann. We express our thanks to you, Mr. Mann, for your wise counsel in guiding our bas- ketball and football teams. You have woven into our high school program a pattern of fair play not found in textbooks. We are grateful for the admirable example you have set for us by your quiet, good-natured disposition and your true sportsmanship on the athletic field. Administration This volume of the Chieftain, like its predecessors, is excellent. It is an accom- plishment of which sponsor, staff, and stu- dents may well be proud. Many elements have gone into this very superior production, but the opinion is here ventured that of all the factors which created it, enthusiastic WORK was by far the most important. One of the most outstanding qualities of successful living, and one of the most significant factors of personal greatness is work. Solomon said, Showest thou me a man diligent in his businessg he shall stand before kingsg he shall not stand before ordi- nary men. Some analysts of this present age have concluded that in many significant ways a rival nation has outstripped our country, they attribute this fact in part to the zealous and patriotic work done by students in that coun- try's schools. Hardin Craig of the University of North Superintendent Carolina once said that he knew of no other HERBERT L. SHOOK group in our country as lazy and indifferent as college men. lt has been charged that not only in our own high school, but all over the United States, students are seeking easy and meaningless honors in school by avoiding basic and essential courses which re- quire the strenuous exercise of brains through long hours, and by substituting less important courses on which high marks can be acquired with minimum effort. Such practice and attitude will assure the superiority of our rivals for world leadership. A prominent educator once said that he would guarantee the success of anyone who would work intelli- gently. The successful production of this yearbook illustrates the point and brings the earnest recommenda- tion that each pupil in the Iuka School cultivate the habit of intelligent and purposeful work as a patriotic contribution to his state and nation and as a key to his personal success. - flaw?- School Board ' ' 4- r Office Secretary E A EA SEATED: Cecil Browng President, Pete Byrom. North Mississippi Champs. . .Third Place A-AA State Tournament. The Rags to Riches story of our IHS Chief- tainettes started with the frequent occurrence of injuries, sickness, and then most of all the lack of enthusiasm among the squad members. All of these factors added up to a dismal regular season and a mediocre record of 12 wins and 9 losses. But, through the efforts of Coach Mann and finally a will to win shown by the team, the greatest season in IHS history came to reality. Defeating Kossuth by a score of 42-32 was a thrill. Reaching the finals of the District was even a greater thrill, Then came the North Miss. finals and the Raiderettes. We were ready by the score of 53-49. The State Tournament. . .Collins '77-59. . . Then a let down. . . Forest Hill 59-65, . . and Shannon again. . .A great finish to a dismal season. From Rags to Riches! ! The Team Wins North Miss.
