SCENES FROM THE SOLID GOLD CADILLAC PRESENTED BY THE MSU CAP 8: GOWN SERIES School Band Our Mal'ChiI'l-8' Ba-nd Janet Bates, Student Director, Directing? 9 7 The Ithaca High School Students and town citizens are very proud of their Marching and Concert Band under the able direction of Mr. Harvey Brien. The marching band has performed during the halves of all the home football games, and journeyed to Clare and participated in their Homecoming activities. The Band also presented a concert at the Ithaca Fall Festival, led the Christmas and Memorial Day Parades, and Swingout. The Concert Band participated in the District Festival at Midland, March 2 g playing AMERICANS WE, CATHEDRAL CAN- YON and FINNISH RHAPSODY No. 1. The District Solo and Ensemble Festival held at Alma, March 23, saw six groups and two solo numbers representing the Ithaca High School Band. These groups received first and second division ratings. The first division groups competed in the state festival at Ann Arbor, on March 23. The big event this year for the band was their donning of new blue and silver uniforms. These uniforms were possible due to the organization of a Band Boosters Club last year. High praise should be given to the club for their selling of calendars, fruit cakes, cookies, and sponsoring of Tag Days, all of which helped the club in obtaining the uniforms. Take a walk along our corridor and see the beautiful pictures, on the walls, the gay colors, modern facilities, new room interiors and generally a new look all the way around. Especially to be noted in the building, is the remodeling Y, of the Commercial Department, which was undertaken at the beginning of the summer of 1956 and finished by the start of the fall term that same year. The two rooms were enlarged and totally remodeled from the celing to the floor. As new and as pleasing as the Commercial Department are the Study Hall and Library. These improvements were made about two years ago. This year, the arts and crafts class was added. This group meets in the shop room. Our school is a fine place to attend, and we are indebted to the Administration, the School Board, and the many fine citizens of our community for their help. In the latter part of last year, a new parking grounds was started, Facing the west front of the school. this area has helped to clear up the problems of congested parking, 1. 3 i 1 2 V 'Qi . - 1 , Q ' 3 W 51: I ' 71, . 4: fefiwwil ,Q ' Q use QQ if v y V www , Joan McWilliams Editor i. .. We thank you, the Board of Education, for the many benefits you have made possible for us, the Senior Class of 1957. You have always considered any of the plans and ideas that the students have had. May you continue your splendid work in helping to maintain the high standards of Ithaca High School and its students. Superintendent Donald L. Baker, B.S., M.A. We, the Senior Class of 1957, would like to sincerely thank you Mr. Baker, for the cooperation you have given us during the past four years. You have never been too busy to give us the encouragement to acquire knowledge and have faith that we have needed in our school years. 4You have always had a kind word for us and tried your best to make our school a place of warm friendship and true spirit. As we go on through our life, our hearts will always remember you and your efforts to make Ithaca Public School a big part in devel- oping our mind and spirit in the American Way. 78 7 We, the Senior Class of 1957, owe much to you, Mr. Mahoney, for your great help to us in our Senior Year. We know that this year for you as well as for us has been one of new horizons and ideals. For you, this is your first year as Principal of Ithaca High School. We know of the many responsibilities that rest on your shoulders, the many times you have given advice to us and the students you have helped with their problems. For us, our Senior year has been one of great decisions to make concerning many of our hopes and ambitions for the future. As we go out into the world your many courtesies and helpful suggestions will remain with us for years to come. We are proud to have had your leadership in our last year at Ithaca Public School. Democratic action is maintained through student representatives. The Student Council serves as a place for the expressions of student opinion, promotes the general activities of the school, and tries its best to improve in all ways the best interests of the school. Under the leadership of Jeff Arnold, the Student Council has successfully completed many projects. Early in the year the Council purchased a public address system for the athletic field. To the delight of many of the Ithaca students, a juke-box was installed for use in the gym. The big project of the school year for the Council was the establishment of a Teen Center. With the help and co-operation of the V. F. W., committees were organized, a constitution was drafted, and space was secured in the V. F. W. hall. The hall was marked off into three sections: dance floor, tables and sofas for relaxing and viewing television, and a recreation room complete with shuffle-board, bumper-pool, and ping- pong table. The grand opening of the Center was January 22, with over 250 teen-agers in attendance. It is open every Saturday night, and the Council feels it has helped the youth of Ithaca in finding a good clean place for them to have fun and grow up in the true American way.
