The first principal of Ithaca Public Schools was Mr. H. R. Pattengill. In 1884 after serving for seven years in this capa- city he declined a reappointment and later became Superintendent of Public Instruct- ion at Lansing. Pattengill Junior High School in Lansing is named for him. A Ithaca High School Faculty - 1910 the present school. The corner stone was laid in 1883 and the building was completed in 1884. This structure cost 823,527.49 In 1909, the east wing was built and in 1911 the west part was added. The enrollment has grown from 30, in heaiing planfp and bus fransporfdfion for fhe rural sfu- monument was later erected to his memory on the site of the old school near the Vil- lage Hall. During Pattengill's administration the wooden school built in 1861 burned down. Plans were then drawn up for a brick building which is now the center section of 1857, to 481 in 1883, and to 826 now. The first graduating class in 1887 had 6 mem- bers. This group too has grown until this years graduating class will be composed of 79 students. This will be the largest in the history of I. H. S. Ithaca High School . In the course of time athletics have changed greatly at I. H. S.
