Each year this trophy is given to the school which has collected the most points for its standings in the various sports. St. Louis and Ithaca are in a tight race for the honor. Ithaca has but two more conference baseball games to go and if she remains ahead of St. Louis, she is assured of first. Ithaca now has a. two game lead over St. Louis and one game either way will be the deciding factor. She can then finish behind St. Louis in track and still walk off with the trophy. In ease Ithaca is victorious, she will retire the All Sports Trophy which she has already won two times. This would give her permanent possession of her second All Sports Trophy since the origin of the award. Ithaca retired the first trophy in 1943 and in 1946 and '47 rolled over her other opponents for the honor. This year is a deciding factor in her quest. GOLF-This spring, April 21, marked the beginning of something' new in Ithaca High School. Due to the efforts of Coach Hiram Becker, Ithaca is now being further represented in sports by a golf team. 'The first. match with Alma proved that only practice makes perfect and the boys found Alma had quite a golf team. The same thing happened with Page Fifty-rhfea . Greenville but in the third match with Portland, Ithaca proved itself. Everything was tied up at the end of the First nine holes and then the rain stepped in and canceled the last nine until a later date. Great interest is being shown by the students and greater things are to be expected of our boys next year. Those who compose the golf team arc: Bob Brown, Mack McCormack, Donald Knapp, John Trask, and Tom Haley. BASEBALL-This year Ithaca has seen reserve Coach Richard Parte produce a. baseball team of which wc can be proud. As this is written, the baseball men have a four won and one lost. record for the season and six more names remain to be played. Ithaca is now in second place in the conference standings. The pitching staff of Ithaca depends mainly upon lucky George NVhitaker, first string pitcher. and sophomore Melvin Baracy, who is a reliahlc relief pitcher. Outstanding hitters who have been pacinp: the Yellowjackets are stubby Larry Gabrion and the twin brothers, John and Dick Gehrig. The others who compose Coach Pages first team are: Charles Hardman, Melvin Maxwell, Chal Bauer, Bill Caldwell, Ed. Foster, Dale Beck, Gordon Nestle, Dick Barnes.
