ELVA COVERT SAWYER, A. B. RUTH HUNT A- B- M, A. MUSIC ' THE PRACTICAL SIDE OF MUSIC While playing an instrument, or singing, in a group, a person learns a most important thing-the ability to cooperate. And what person but a hermit can get along without cooperativeness in this life of constant contact with others? Reproducing music satisfies the human urge to create. Everyone likes to express himself and if he cannot do so, his life becomes a cooped-up box. But if he has the opportunity of putting his person- ality into music by singing or playing some instrument, his nature is getting gratification for its creative desires. OUR BAND The Ithaca school band was started in the fall of 1935. Irs first playing engagement was at a high school football game in November of 1935. Since that memorable occasion the band has performed at many functions, including Christmas parades, athletic contests, church meetings, grange programs, country school reunions, school assemblies, graduations, oil meetings, school plays, and even big political pow- wows. The band played at the Wednesday night concerts down town last summer and started the idea of an annual summer reunion of county bands, which is to continue in the future. William Coburn, A. B.

SCIENCE The period in which we are living today may rightfully be termed the age of science. It is ditlicult for us to believe that there were no electric lights in use until long after the Civil War or that the tele- phone was considered only a novel toy even so late as 1876. Today we dial our radios and listen to an abdication speech by an European monarch or we follow the progress of a presidential inauguration. The devices through which we are able to follow so closely the happen- ing of world events seem to us to be only commonplace, but some- where in the background of the development we can find by search- ing closely the spirit of inquiry which is so characteristic of the pro- gress of science, In studying science it is the aim to learn to appreciate the achieve, ments which science has made possible. It is also possible through scientific study to acquire the ability to observe accurately scientific phenomena, and from such observation reach the reasonable conclu- sions. Out of these observations arises our ability to control the phy- sical forces for the good of our society. Fred H. Passenger, B. S.
