LANGUAGES The study of foreign languages is of untold value in its influence on our use of the English language. Interpretation of the Latin and French develops power in English expression, while grammar study develops a real understanding of the structure of the English language. Latin as background for future language study, and French as one of the most extensively spoken languages of the modern world, hold im- portant places in the curriculum. The extensive heritage of English from both these languages makes them indispensable in the acquisition of a large English vocabulary. We must not fail to mention, in addi- tion to these more mechanical aspects, the rich stores of literary master- pieces in Latin and French, and the appreciation developed from this literary study. The language clubs are important for their social value, giving opportunities for student participation in organization and program planning. Above all, they give the students of languages opportunity to become well acquainted as friends, and to enjoy their language. Helen Crawford, A. B.

Di' HOME ECON CMICS I-Iomemaking is second to no other vocation. It is world wide in its service for on every level there is work to be done in and for the home. In high school the problem is not to teach the girl to cook one dish, but to serve a meal and feed the familyg not to sew a seam, but to plan a wardrobeg not to make a few ornaments for a home, but the importance of making a home beautiful inside and out. It teaches her the value of family relationships and child care and child trainingg in other words it fits her for a complete family life--her life in the future. - Home economics is making worthy contributions to the education of the student in the fields of health, good use of leisure time, worthy home membership, and character development. In other words it is an education in home living. Barbara Clark. B. S.

MATHEMATICS The laws of mathematics and the laws of the universe are con- stantg even as day follows the night, the principles of methematics turn from arithmetic into algebra and geometry, and on through fields of intricate calculation. Thus is built a foundation upon which the applied sciences depend for mechanical development, engineering feats, economic diagnosis, and allied fields of human endeavor. There- fore it is very beneficial that the students pursue courses which are foundation stones upon which to build a structure for individual suc- cess. The future citizen needs not only training in a specialized field but an adequate understanding of the fundamentals, in order that he may be able to orientate himself in this ever changing world. The disciplinary and cultural value of High School mathematics united with its practical applications rank the courses in mathematics high in im- portance for the requisites in a well rounded education. This makes the study of algebra and geometry valuable to the student, Mabel M. S-owle, A. B.
