Some little changes, some big changes. We attend frequent, worthwhile assemblies according to an efficient system of seating and passing. Our lunch shifts are organized so that we don't have to stand in interminable lines. Students may apply for unsupervised honors study halls. A new feeling of efficiency and progress is present. Curriculum advances and modern teaching methods are tangible evidence of positive action. Faculty-student discussion of problems and possibilities produce ideas, projects and understanding. We take interest now. When we have a thought or suggestion aboutashorter schoolday or a new club, we try to carry it through. Ifa single source of thechanges can be named, that source is Dr. Graves. He invites progress, whether in a small adjustment or a major plan. He encourages our propositions and listens to our complaints. We feel free to stop him inthehallorvisithim in his office. By depending on us, he makes us dependable. Byasking for initiative, he makes us creative. With this dedication, we thank him. 5 Feature Table Of Contents Faculty 15 Seniors as Y X5 'tiff -'we i 31 il Underclassmen Activities ' '55 7e 3 , . -alffff' 6:1 V: ' li .V ,, .1 . gf b Annual Staff Ginger Cranch, Editor Bob Sproull, General Manager john McManus, Photography Susan Foster, Editorial Assistant Lois Wiltberger, Advertising Brian Earle, Business Louise Kolar, Layout Anna Holmberg, Layout Mary Simpson, Circulation Myrtle Naylor, Circulation M. J. Herson, Copy Priscilla Blair, Copy Terry Gips, Senior Class Sheryl Lunn, Senior Class We are leaving now. We are leaving a compact, friendly world for a grander, more harsh one. Farewell regrets mask our bursting desire to be free. We have felt and thought and done many things, but we sense the lim- itations of our experience here, and restlessly strain to see over the myste- rious horizon which looms before us. Too naive to really fear what that horizon hides, we dash away without glancing back over our shoulders at the past years. We forget to stop and recall. We forget to appreciate. We forget. R, J le-ww 4' We forget the utter dismay and reverence we covered by giggles and shouts the very first day when we were the very first people to sit in the auditorium. We forget the necessary adjustments to unlimited homework, to alphabetical homerooms, to six report cards, to new friends our hopeless schedules demand- ed, to being the youngest. We were unbeliev- ably enthusiastic that year. We usually didn't know what was going on around us. We moved gaily in our own little orbs. We gawked at upperclassmen, smiled shyly at teachers, acted confident even when we weren't. .17 gf. as aw. . . -V gas? .. ,W 5?-:ei fi 2 fi .. .f i Before we had a chance to savor it, the first year was gone. We forget how we came back from summer Vaca- tion and felt several eons older. We no longer had to pretend to be bigg we were. We forget how hard we worked. That was the hardest year. Between our junior Themes and the Industrial Revolution, we didn't have much time for us. But we made time where it didn't exist, and put it to characteristic- ally bad use. We forget how we thought we owned the world. We made a point of flaunting authority. We tried hard to grow up. And we didn't let any of the disturbing things in life matter. 9 it - That year fled too. We forget how surprised we were to learn that being a senior isn,t so very different. We realized, almost suddenly, that we cou1dn't possibly live up to the standards that were to be required of us. We forget how depressed we got. Everyone was asking us to plan our entire lives, and we were having trouble deciding what to do next week- end. We forget the interminable series of exams, forms, applications, questionnaires, essays that we completed at the last minute. We kicked around listlessly. Wie got so fed up that we played grade school games to escape. We got high on our own false ecstasy. We tried to figure out what life is, and why. We forget that we needed a quiet haven for our metamorphosis. We thrashed out problems inside ourselves and tried to make the solu- tions work. We had to start to find ourselves before we could face everyone else. We forget how hard we fought to try to understand. Every day was like all the others. A boring succession of waiting for and wasting week- ends. We were too involved to notice the subtle evolution. We forget the change effect- ed here. We think' we were always as we are now. But each experience, exhilarating praise or depressing quiz failure, each book from Tropic of Cancer to Lord lim, each friend, each teacher, pushed us ahead. We stumbled forward through life just as we plowed through federal lunch lines. Exhaus- tion seemed to be the only result. Our mad search seemed to have stopped short in a huge vacuum. We forget the despair we felt when we hit that vacuum. We discovered and felt and groveled in our new selves. We forget the bliss that seeped into our bodies through the roots of the court- yard grass each spring when it seemed im- possible to go back to class after lunch. Some days were good. ,lust plain good. They sparkled and we felt like soaring from the ground to the top of the pine tree. We forget how we created joy. We smiled and laughed and roared. We didn't try -to keep from exploding. fi It was like a miniature universe here. Complete, but built to Lilliputian scale. Our lives in- cluded bits and fragments of what is to come. We forget the separate events and details. They form a heavy mass that teeters on the boundary of the subconscious and comes rolling forward when disturbed by a cloudy recollection of weekly swimming classes, marching band, or Tazttlen. We came as baffled children and left as capable individuals, We became people here. 12 -V 1.3 ,nb A ,, T I N. L5 K . fl ' 2. fs ' f if Y 5 3 L ff . Y -.-,.. , LM, .,,. Moresco's chargers compiled a reputable 4-3-l record, with many games which could have gone either Way. The Little Red were beaten thoroughly only by Union Endicott and had a good chance of winning in both of the other games which they lost. This year found Ithaca in a new formation. For years the Little Red have relied upon the powerful single wing offense. In the opening game against Elmira Free Academy, the lthacans shocked their opponents with a new, more deceptive, unbalanced tee attack. The win over Academy was followed by a tie with Binghamton Central and then three straight losses to Vestal, Johnson City, and Union Endicott. Still full of fight, however, the Little Red proceeded to win their last three games against non-leaguer Auburn, Binghamton North, and finally Elmira Southside, to complete a great come-from- behind season. After season laurels went to Captain Bill Kohm who was selected to the first team All Southern Tier Conference, plus being voted Ithaca's Outstanding Player and was recipient of the joe Spano Award which goes to the Ithaca player who best exemplifies the spirit and sports- manship of the late joe Spano. STANDING: Mr. Hipolit, Burt, Holgate, Gillis, Smith. Oh, when the saints .... The story of Ithaca High cross country in 1962 is one of a very small squad made still smalkr by illness and injury. Coach Kasimer Hipolit's runners, never at full strength, began ignominiously with four consecutive losses. In the first meet EFA whipped the Ithacans 26-50. A week later Ithaca again trailed at the Conwicke Invitational, taking a fourth place in a nine team meet. In the next meet, a quadrangular one, Ithaca stole off with last place. In the Vestal Invitational, the harriers were fortunate to get sixth place in an eleven team field. Things began to look up when a good team effort gained a tie with U-E. The Sectionals were an anticlimax as Ithaca placed fifth out of seven teams and qualified only one runner, Mark Heinicke, for the Inter- sectionals. Co-captain Mark Heinicke was the outstanding performer throughout the season. He was followed by Al Donohue and co-captain Clayton Smith. Dick Holgate, Dan Burt, Mark Thompson, and Al Gillis completed the first team in that order. Ed Crossmore was the running manager.
