Nine years later, in 1932, he became Prin- cipal here. Now, in 1962, he is gradu- ating with our class to a well-earned retirement. As a Principal, Mr. Bliss has led the school with a steady hand and keen eye through problems and periods of hard times as well as through periods MR. FRANK R. BLISS of routine and good order. He has worked in a complex, impersonal administration, but has not forgotten the individual student. He has grown with the school and the school has grown under his wise and patient leadership. Through the years his manner has been quiet, but his reforms have been sure and effective. He has exercised prudence and sagacity in his actions. For thirty- nine years Mr. Bliss has been more than a figurehead for the school, more than the man behind the desk in the office. He has been a friend and counsellor, an understand- ing leader, and most of all, a man whose presence in this good school will long be remem- bered. To him the Class of 1962 is proud to dedicate their ANNUAL. Annual Stall SEQTED: lynn Cunningham, Nancy Blumenfeld, Maryann Sanford. The sun clear and bright over G-building in the f morning, the deafening clatter of heels resounding in the polished hallways, the clangor and laughter and steamy smells of noonhour in the cafeteria, and the final disgorging of clustered students into a sun-warmed after- noon . . . all the private emotions we feel at these memories of a day merge into a warm and vital portrait of the years we have spent here. The class of 1962 has a special memory, however, which sets us apart from those to come: we are the last of the old-timers , carry- ing with us the fading impressions of a sophomore year in a huge, dark fortress which now has a new name and a new set of inmates. Arriving for our iunior year ot a new and spacious campus was like bursting from a cave into open air 'WH S . . . but perhaps at times some of us grew a little nostalgic for clark, familiar walls and that enforced togetherness of the Old School. The experiences of the senior year were not unlike what we had an- ticipated, and yet were so much richer than the narrow scope of expectation can encompass. The strange combination of feelings, of pride and satisfaction at having made real achievements, of concern for how we would do in the future, made this year a mixture of ela- tions and disappointments. -tiff, K We recall the events of this past year which have made lasting impressions, and also the fleeting ones which were significant only for the moment when they occurred. Dances, College Boards, Regents and National Merit Scholarship Exams, the choir candy sale, the band trip, football games, the Tattler all merge into a kaleidoscopic panorama of the 1961-62 year. We suffered through the endless college and job applications and gloried in the blizzards which gave us unexpected freedom from the daily grind. The seniors had their special activities which were at once so exhilarating and so much more ordinary than we had expected. Somehow we have come through it all, and every milestone passed has added another coveted battle scar. or-. .':' ,,,,.....-sf-A-H '+?l?T?5?9 Taking the luxury of the moment to look back, these years seem to us something more impor- tant than we can as yet realize, and we are glad for both the pain and pleasure we have known, as well as for the seeds of ideas which have taken root in us. At the end we leave, without false regrets, the old focal point of our days. We take with us the memories of a day, with all its sights and sounds and smells entangled forever in our senses, ever waiting for the sight of a friend or the sound of a phrase to call up the whole world of Ithaca High School and bind together our scattered lives. ,- Sl F a o c u y H ,Q 3 T1 ix H M- .W in ffyf ff' 2:1 23: Ill Irv 4.3 if H ,SQ sims iii They who educate children well, ore more to be honored than they who produce themg for these only gave them life, those the art of living well. Band Trip In preparation for this trip the band carried on a series of money-raising proiects to cover the numerous expenses of almost 100 persons for a six day tour. Included in the projects were a chicken barbecue Cat which the band served about 1700 peoplel, a ham dinner, a magazine sub- scription drive, and a host of ingenious individual proi- ects from bottle collecting to house painting. Not only did the band raise the necessary 57100, but the members found the time to practice three times per week for the marching band and two for the concert band. it On November 21, 1961, the Ithaca High School Concert Band and the Little Red Marching Band set out on a concert tour of Michigan and Ohio via Eastern Canada and New York State. The tight band schedule included: performing in the J.L. Hudson Parade in Detroit, Michigan on Thanks- giving Day, a concert at the home plant of the National Cash Register Company in Dayton, Ohio, a half-time show before some 80,000 spectators at the Cleveland Browns - New York Giants football game on November 26, and a concert in Buffalo, New York on Monday, November 27. ii KN It is the Ithaca High School Band's unrelenting search for perfection which gives it the remarkable spirit and drive to undertake an assign- ment as demanding as a six day performing tour. Mr. Frank L. Battisti, director and dynamo of the band, has stated it this way: Excellence is a way of life. When each member gives as much of himself as he can to the whole, we can achieve something great. Something of this idea was echoed in the minds of the band members as they stood to play on the wide field of the Cleveland Stadium, conscious of the eyes of television viewers throughout the country. And it was still with them when they straggled from their buses into the arms of their waiting families, six days after they had set out, with the satisfying weariness of those who know they have given their best. 149 fs if H rr y h . 5 , ,g i ' ljti if' T V ,I Q ,., V L, g, 1 A . AND THE STAFF OF THE SCHOOL SAVINGS BANK. Three bankers strode briskly into a large room and took their places at a meeting of the board of trustees. AII wore sneakers, two had pony- tails, and one still has a crush on the bank president. A joke? Hardly. The three bankers and their teenage associates are all students at Ithaca lNew Yorkl Senior High School, and they're in- volved in the serious and challenging business of operating the only high- school savings bank in the United States - now preparing for its second year of operation.
