MAI TORNR6TI-I-MISS IHS OF I958

EMPIRE STATE First Row-Bob Gardner, Jean Houghton, and Gene Elliott. Second Row-George Knaysi, Dick York, Bill Coggshall, Randy Little, and J. C. Page. Each summer as most of you are beginning your vacations, a few Juniors pack their suitcases and tennis rackets, and take off for Empire State. This organization is spon- sored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. The candidates are selected by the Legion on the basis of citizenship, scholarship and service. They learn the workings of their government from the moment they arrive, when they are divided up into two parties. They elect city, county and state officials and often they get a chance to meet their real-life counterparts in actual government. This year at Girls' State, Jean Houghton was elected County Surrogate, and at Boys' State, Randy Little Was' elected a county delegate to the party caucus and was an assem- blyman. J. C. Page was also an assemblyman, While Gene Elliott was a sheriff, Bob Gardner a senator, Dick York a city assessor and band member, and Bill Coggshall a band member. 19

The afternoon of February 13th provided quite a time for me. I was resting peacefully in my usual hangout, the Tattler-Annual office, watch- ing kids hurriedly counting ballots. I thought nothing of it until my quiet reverie was shattered by the screech, Maj won!!! Then I understood and squeaked with the rest. Maj Tornroth was our Miss IHS for 1958. I had seen Maj's illustrated monologue, A Very Special Day, and besides being original, it truly demonstrated her charming personality and artistic talent. Not far behind were second place winner Judy Osborn and third place winner Faith Miller. That Winning Smile ' ' ' J udy's breath-taking acrobatic dance, per- formed to the music of, Some of These Days, gave me a Charley-mouse just watching. Faith did a winning pantomime to the popular song, Tammy, Her grace and charm made Faith's favorite song pay off for her. On Valentine's Day the whole school joined me in cheering and congratulating these three lovely girls. Maj Tornroth especially will never forget the thrill of the Miss IHS Contest of 1958. This has been the first year that Ithaca High has sponsored a foreign exchange student, and we feel that it has been a very satisfactory experi- ment. Through the American Field Service we A s I gr learned how we could enter into the exchange lhs program. Then, one day last summer, Maj Torn- roth came to Ithaca. She was welcomed into the home of the Reed Bonney family on Hanshaw Road, where she became a real member of the family. With her new sisters, Anita and Sandy she came to IHS, where she has taken such courses as American History, World Literature, and Drawing and Painting. Maj became active in high school life, joining such organizations as Hi-Y, German Club, and Legislative. She has at- tended many school functions, from football and basketball games to formal dancesg so we are sure that she has caught the spirit of IHS. We know that we will always remember Maj when we think of our senior year. May the year she spent in Ithaca be one of the best in her life. In German Club . . . In Homeroom . . . 21
