Art Editor s s- tip 015 L! 4 lj I I 1 X' 1 'SIX I ss,Peter B-rown iJ. Cuyler Poge s so Normon Locy Rondolph Little ,Deboroh Jones Hi there, students of IHS! I'm the mouse in your life. Though you seldom see me, I see everything that goes on behind these ivied walls. In fact I live here. When I was compiling my memoirs I set aside some parts about your school year-the teachers, the classes, club meetings, sports events, concerts, and plays. The Annual contains these selections from my diary and my personal photograph album. But let me tell you the amazing explanation of how I, a mere mouse, was given such honor. Early one morning the Annual staff discovered me hurriedly trying to clean up some ink I had spilled. They pitched in to help cover up the evidence of my carelessness and found what I had been writ- ing. Curious, they read my feeble efforts and pro- nounced them magnificent. Only after many hours of persuasion did I finally permit the Annual staff to publish the chapters devoted to 1957-58 with the one condition that they would help me make them more complete. The contract was signed by all the staff and witnessed by school officials. The Annual staff and all of you students and fac- ulty have grandly carried out your part of the bargain by taking pictures and posing for the photographer and furnishing factual background material. Now, I humbly submit the 1957-58 section of my memoirs fslightly edited to avoid offending persons still livingb to show a mouse-eye view of Ithaca High School. The unexpurgated remainder of my memoirs cov- ering my life in this building from 1914 to 1961 are to be included in the cornerstone of the new school. IHS students of the year 2000 will CI hopel chuckle over the ancient escapades that went on behind the ivied walls of the old school. So, now you see how my mouse memoirs became the 1958 Annual. Editor's note: We are deeply grateful for these contributions. Without them, there would have been no 1958 Annual. At last, his old family motto has proved true: Rodcntis ad infinitum-sic Semper homo sapiens. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY . . SENIORS. . . SPORTS . . ACTIVITIES . . . ADVERTISING. . . 7 17 75 . .89 137 The Senior Class gratefully dedicates this book, the 1958 Annual, to its friend and counselor, Samuel J. Catalfano. His aid and service throughout our four years at IHS has helped us over many rough spots in dealing with careers, college applications, and schedule changes. But few of us realize how much time and energy he has devoted to us behind the scenes, while arranging and supervising scholarship exams, writing numerous letters of recommendation, and filling out many high school record forms for college and job applicants. But aside from his duties as counselor, he is also Director of Foreign Languages for the entire Ithaca Public School System, and is in charge of the cadet teachers of foreign languages, as Well as being the head of the IHS language department. He somehow man- ages to teach a class of second year French on the side, and has obliged French Club on many occasions by giving talks on his experiences in France. So in behalf of the class of '58 as well as the Whole school, this dedication is our Way of saying, Thank you, Mr. Catalfanof' 6 FACULTY W HM fl ,VK UJME y1.Ly'7f S W2 ' JV M' iw- Q51 f KN DIVUX! If someone were to ask me which class was my favorite, I guess I'd have to say the Seniors. I like hard workers, and that's what these students are. My tunnels under the Woodshop shook when the class turned out in full force on two Saturdays in November to make Christmas centerpieces as their project. They had fun and made more money than I or anyone else thought possible. Activities went on all year, of course. Topping them all, I think, was the Senior Ball. I was there, that night in June, sitting under the refreshment table and listening to the beautiful dance music. Second Row-George Knaysi, Dick York, Bill Coggshall, Randy Little, and J. C. Page. Each summer as most of you are beginning your vacations, a few Juniors pack their suitcases and tennis rackets, and take off for Empire State. This organization is spon- sored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. The candidates are selected by the Legion on the basis of citizenship, scholarship and service. They learn the workings of their government from the moment they arrive, when they are divided up into two parties. They elect city, county and state officials and often they get a chance to meet their real-life counterparts in actual government. This year at Girls' State, Jean Houghton was elected County Surrogate, and at Boys' State, Randy Little Was' elected a county delegate to the party caucus and was an assem- blyman. J. C. Page was also an assemblyman, While Gene Elliott was a sheriff, Bob Gardner a senator, Dick York a city assessor and band member, and Bill Coggshall a band member. 19 MAI TORNR6TI-I-MISS IHS OF I958 The afternoon of February 13th provided quite a time for me. I was resting peacefully in my usual hangout, the Tattler-Annual office, watch- ing kids hurriedly counting ballots. I thought nothing of it until my quiet reverie was shattered by the screech, Maj won!!! Then I understood and squeaked with the rest. Maj Tornroth was our Miss IHS for 1958. I had seen Maj's illustrated monologue, A Very Special Day, and besides being original, it truly demonstrated her charming personality and artistic talent. Not far behind were second place winner Judy Osborn and third place winner Faith Miller. That Winning Smile ' ' ' J udy's breath-taking acrobatic dance, per- formed to the music of, Some of These Days, gave me a Charley-mouse just watching. Faith did a winning pantomime to the popular song, Tammy, Her grace and charm made Faith's favorite song pay off for her. On Valentine's Day the whole school joined me in cheering and congratulating these three lovely girls. Maj Tornroth especially will never forget the thrill of the Miss IHS Contest of 1958. This has been the first year that Ithaca High has sponsored a foreign exchange student, and we feel that it has been a very satisfactory experi- ment. Through the American Field Service we A s I gr learned how we could enter into the exchange lhs program. Then, one day last summer, Maj Torn- roth came to Ithaca. She was welcomed into the home of the Reed Bonney family on Hanshaw Road, where she became a real member of the family. With her new sisters, Anita and Sandy she came to IHS, where she has taken such courses as American History, World Literature, and Drawing and Painting. Maj became active in high school life, joining such organizations as Hi-Y, German Club, and Legislative. She has at- tended many school functions, from football and basketball games to formal dancesg so we are sure that she has caught the spirit of IHS. We know that we will always remember Maj when we think of our senior year. May the year she spent in Ithaca be one of the best in her life. In German Club . . . In Homeroom . . . 21 IN MEMORIAM Everett Barry Young-April 28, 1940-J une 22, 1957 In 1954 Barry Young joined the class of '58 at Boynton Junior High School. His pleasant nature and easy-going amiability quickly Won him many friends. Then in June of 1957 the entire class Was greatly shocked and saddened by his sudden death in an automobile accident. In addition to Working after school, Barry was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Junior Class, and the YMCA. Since he would have graduated with us, it is fitting that Barry be included as a member of the class of '58. 'CW Jack R. Once a month a serious group of important people got together at the Board of Edu- cation to arrange schedules and transportation for our athletic teams, to outfit squads and to balance the athletic budget. They also awarded letters to Marching Band members football, basketball, and baseball players if they qualified. The Wrestling had an oppor- tunity to receive a letter and boys on the track team could receive a varsity insignia if they earned enough points. I didn't quite understand What all the papers, folders and talk was about, but they used big numbers and long Words so I was highly impressed. Our successful sports program started hereg so I'm sure those Words, and numbers were in our favor. 7 Y IHS? Can't lose! VARSITY FOOTBALL First Row: Ken Herrmann, Bill Rocco, Craig Beach, Ronnie Kozak fco-captainj, Bob Nixon fco-captainb, Jim Mikell, Ronnie Harmon, Ralph Melton. Fifth Row: Mr. Maybee, Peter Cheney, Steve Albright, Coach Hipolit, Coach Moresco, Trainer Turco, Norman Reynolds. I'm not sure that I've completely mastered the basic concepts of this game yet. As far as I can see, some guy like Yengo picks up the ball and tries to run as far as he can fapparently, the direction in which he runs has nothing to do with itl, and at the same time, he tries to knock down as many people as he can without getting knocked down himself. Eventually somebody walks off the end of the field, and they start over again in the middle. Finally, everybody gets tired and goes home, thus ending the game. Every- body seems to get a big charge out of it however Cno wonder-this year We Won five games and lost three-that was much better than some other years IJ, and they drop all kinds of choice tidbits under the stands. This is confusion on a slightly smaller scale than the varsity team. Coach Hipolit sends his well-padded men out on the field and they charge some other well-padded men and fight over a little ball. QI just can't understand why they want to fight over a thing like that-it doesn't even smell like cheese.J The J. V.'s had a very good season this year-they won four and lost two. Second Row-Larry McCray, Jack McEliot, John Stone, Gene Elliott, Tom Smith, Dave Fundis, Bill Lelik, and Coach Culligan. It's my life's ambition to be a star basketball player for IHS. During every game, I study the technique of my idols, Tom Smith and Jack Ackles. I get a pretty good view of the games from my perch on the top of the home basket. There I see my pal, Mr. Elmore, faithfully tending the clock. Boy, our team's had its first Winning season in years. That's probably because l I've been helping them out. When the l score is tied and when it's the last minute of the game and one of our boys hits the basket-the ball goes round and round and round . . . Guess who gives it just a little shove? I get a real treat out of going to those Wrestling matches. When they have away matches, I even get a chance to visit my relatives. When we reach our destination, the boys in their sweatshirts and I in my cap settle down for a long Winter's nap until the crowd starts coming in. That's my signal to get up and join the referees. It takes a little guy like me to see all the fine points of the match. If there's room for me to squeeze under the boy's shoulder, then the refs say it's not a pin. In the fall twelve healthy young men raced across the track field as fast and as far as they could go. This went on for several practice sessions at which they ran around in circles, at least that's what it looked like to me. The boys were starting out a fine season, when a thing known as the 'tflu bug hit them, which was unfortunate. After all the work they had done, they only participated in four meets. At home against Union-Endicott we won 25-33. At the sectional run at Vestal, sixteen schools participated and Ithaca came in second behind Vestal. At Cincinnatus they came in second also to C.B.A. of Syracuse. Three runners qualified to go to the State lntersectional at Beth Page, Long Island: Jack Ackles, Captain Jim Rogers, and Robin Williams. lt was great fun racing with them across the field, but it was hard on me-with four legs. -xf i A GOLF TEAM: First Row-Jim Johnson, Dick Shulman, Chuck Johns, and Mr. Bred- benner. But my parents decided the general insecurity fdanger from ICBM tests and scurrilous languagej was a psy- chologically unfavorable environment for children. I remember how funny it was to see these big men hitting little white balls into the cups. But I'll never forget the crazy hats and outfits the players wore. That Dick Shulman took the cheesecake! Once I watched him knock a ball from 15 feet right into my neighbor's home in one shot. It looked so simple, I tried it. Hall It's not easy, believe me. I have a lot of respect for my golfing friends. I come from a long line of tennis players, so naturally I'm quite hep to the game. Just a tidbit of incidental intelligence here-my great, great, great-Uncle Amos never was one for girls and stuff so when he devised the tennis system of scoring he let out his emotions with deuce and love as nothing. As soon as there's a sniff of Spring in the air, we tennis champs polish up our rackets and high-tail it to Stewart Park. I've never missed a practice yet and I'm always on hand to give Coach Morris and Mr. Bredbenner my expert advice on the old-school methods. Anyway, they've done right well-their victorious record for the season proves it. Still, I know they couldn't have been quite as successful if it hadn't been for my ace tennis secret: cheese for super-strength, alert gray matter, and get-up-and-go-beat-'em. Tsnms TEAM TENNIS TEAM: First Row-Bill Coggshall, Bill Charron, Dan Evett, Mr. Morris fcoachl, Gene Elliott, Steve Schmal, and John Davis. Second Row- John Gutenberger, Charles Henderson, Bob Shaw, Rolly Johnson, Frank Fernalld, Arnie Hammer, Bob Seager, and Starr Atwood. 86 RIFLE TEAM: First Row-Chuck Brown, Don Eagan, Jim Rog- ers, and John Ore. Sec- ond Row-Mr. Morris fcoachj, Bill Ehart, Bill Wise, and Betty Hahn. RIFLE TEAM I wondered if I should attend the practice sessions that the members had once a week. They met in the gym and used a special target which, by the way, wasn't me. They participated in several meets with other schools through which they gained experience and practice. The importance of safety with a rifle was emphasized and the boys finally convinced me it was safe to come into their practice room. Still I'm the cautious type and stay well over in a corner. In the spring a lot of boys participated in track, which was divided into two groups. The running events included the 100 and 220-yard dashes, the quarter mile, the half mile, and the low hurdles. The field events consisted of the high jump, shot put and discus throw. By the signs of activity and enthusi- asm the boys showed I knew we would be pretty spectacular this year. .TRACK TEAM TRACK TEAM: First Row-Willie Young, George Peterson, Ron- ald Harmon, James Rogers, York Mayo, Bob Nixon. LETTERMEN'S CLUB I finally received recognition for my javelin throwing with a pencil, because the newly established Letterman's Club elected me an honorary member. I received a white sweater, as recognition for being a member. The sweater was knitted by club president, Tom Smith and I wore it proudly every Friday as did all the other members. In order to raise money the club organized a coat check at the basketball and wrestling matches. I was a great help! I mixed up all the tags to make the boys work harder and keep in shape. Things started off with a splash this year when a swimming team was formed. As I see it, their objective is not so much to win as to gain experience and provide a foundation for future IHS swim teams. The boys practice four nights a week at the YMCA or at Teagle Hall and the team proves to be a promising one. Of course I practice faithfully and I've gained quite a reputation for my mousepaddle, but unfortunately my diving has suffered. My trunks will not stay up! The band forms a dollar sign while they play the Scotch tune John Anderson. And now we present for your entertainment the Ithaca High School Little Red Marching Band. This is how the Marching Band was intro- duced in the fall of the year. Sometimes sixth period, I hid in Don's tuba and followed them to Washington Park where they often practiced, and every football game I led the band down high school field from the top of Pete's hat. I enjoyed hearing songs from My Fair Lady and Around the World in Eighty Days. I was really tickled when they formed a hypodermic needle and played I've Got You Under My Skin, signifying the Asian flu epidemic. The leadership of Drum Major Pete Farrow and Drum Sergeant Bob Gardner, along with the work of the capable director, Mr. Battisti, helped the band achieve its aim, to make this year's IHS Marching Band the best ever. . ,e ...uma The March of the Siamese Children from The King and I is the setting for this pagoda formation. I once thought that my tunnel underneath the basement corridor was a peaceful place after 3:00 p.m. After a while, however, I was no longer so naive. The hall began to periodically pulsate with the cry of Beat 'em up, Ithaca! and other similar calls to battle. These cries came from pretty little girls, aptly called cheerleaders. I began to sit and watch them in fascination. After that, I wasn't quite my old self. One day, I tried to turn a cartwheel and my tail got caught in my mouth. I can assure you that it was a very unfortunate accident. Although these cheerleaders did disturb my peaceful abode, I somehow hated the silence when they left. 92 CONCERT BAND First Row-J. C. Undoubtedly the Concert Band is a great addition to the school. The only thing that bothered me this year was the way in which the percussion section, particularly the member of it they call madman Mobbs, shook the plaster off the walls of my under- stage runways. Not only did I have to take it during sixth period, but one night in April they came back around eight and played for an hour and a half in front of a fascinated audience of parents, teachers, and kids who hadn't had their fill of school for the day. And that Battisti! Piercing man, piercing. The vibrations from those vocal cords could spring the strongest mousetrap in the world. Several times a Week during the sixth period, strains of Gesu Bambino or Leroy Anderson's Promenade or any other piece from their varied repertoire reached me no matter Where I was in the building. The music drew me as if by magic through my secret corridors to the auditorium where I scurried to a choice spot to listen. Handel's Messiah, which the Orchestra performed with the Senior Choir at Christmas time, nearly swept me off my feet. A select group from the Orchestra formed the Assembly Orchestra. Some of the members were given the opportunity to conduct this smaller Orchestra during school assemblies. April 18th was a memorable day -it was the day that Conductor Svvampy led the Orchestra to success in the Spring Concert. Several members were chosen to attend All-State Which, of course, made me very proud since I consider myself the chief rooter of IHS, not only in athletics, but in all pur- suits. And in my esteemed opinion, this year has been one of the best the Orchestra has ever had. 94 Detweiler, Jean Chacona, Sylvia Bly, Madeline Jenkins, Diane Cole, Nancy Pasley, Irene Lyon, Patricia Piper, Carvel Beyer, Sandra Sortman. One day, while building a nest in a tuba in the music room, I was rudely taken up and put in a bus along with the tuba. Frantically I tried to escape but someone mentioned All-State and I stayed to find out what was up. When the bus finally stopped, I found out that We were in Rochester for the big All-State. This consists of the best musicians from all the schools in the state. These poor students had to practice for eight hours a day for a couple of days. Finally they gave a concert, or rather three concerts, choral, band, and orchestra. I Went to all three and was really floored by how good they were. They could almost go professional. Later I found out that there had been an- other All-State called the Sectionals which was held in Bath, late in November. It was held only for the schools in this section. About thirty-five students represented IHS. Even though I didn't go, I am sure that it was a very educational experience. Fit to kill. 96 JUNIOR CHORAI. Every third period on Tuesdays and Thursdays, sweet, melodious strains float from that room of all trades known as the auditorium. They are made by the Junior Choral Club of course. This organization is a good training ground for those who wish to make Senior Choral Club and although Mr. Mason tries to keep things fairly serious, the girls sometimes completely break up either over one of his jokes or at some other member's gem of a comment. But they honestly produce good music and if this is any indication of what the choral organizations in the years to come are going to be like, I for one am going to buy a season ticket to all their concerts. Whew! It's certainly suffocating standing on those risers with the Senior Choral Club. I peek out of my ventilator Chute now and then to see Mr. Mason frantically direct- ing the girls over Susie's flushed brow. The versatility of this group never ceases to amaze me. A minute ago they were solemnly sing- ing In Nateli Dominij' and now they've begun to snap their fingers to the rhythm of Fum Fum Fum. What contrast! Between songs, I can hear them chortling at Mr. Mason's jokes. I regret to say that I usually miss these catchy bits of humor because I don't dare go any closer to the boys. Brass Choir, composed of members of the brass section of the Band, is also under the direction of Mr. B. This year they were one of the most active music groups and, although I didn't go everywhere with them, I certainly heard all about their activities. They played Christmas carols for members of the faculty, were heard on the radio, and performed in the Music Department's Christmas Concert. They were invited to play for the N.Y.S. Music Association's Annual Conference in Rochester where, as usual, they did a fine job. Anyone who hears the Brass Choir play notices that, in addition to their fine musician- ship, they have a wonderful spirit-they always seem to be enjoying themselves. 101 SOPHOMORE CLASS First Row: Dr. Zien, Terry Cullen ftreasurerb, Jim Johnston, Cvice presidentb, Ed Knaysi fpresidentl Denley Rothmann fsecretaryj, Mrs. Weeks. I scamper out of sight and into my mousehole whenever I hear the stampeding of juniors into room 102. This unmistakably tells me that a Junior Class meeting is going to be held. What I see from my vantage point looking between the legs of George Peterson, who seems to be in at least partial control, is a melee of enthusiastic people who leave me confused but impressed. Ideas really fly at these meetingsg everybody's trying to out- talk everyone else about everything. First it's the prom, and Nancy and Mait struggle to channel the excess enthusiasm into con- crete ideas for a theme. QI personally can't think of a more delicious one than A World of Green Cheese, but the group didn't feel this was romantic enoughj After Bob Shaw's report that 150 of the most popular style of class rings have been already or- dered, Dave and Sandy find that everyone wants to be in the assembly. This is an organization I really enjoy. It curls my tail to see those girls talking for a practical purpose for a change. And are they versatile! One Week they gave a dance called Japanese Twilight and the next they held a debate. Why they can debate on any topic from the English cabinet method of legisla- E ee tion, to Santa traveling by Sputnik, to the direct election of the President of the United States. And I mustn't forget to mention the all-successful Congress-Legislative debate on socialized medicine held last January. Legis- lative Won for the first time in some years! Besides debating with Congress, Legislative joined Congress to organize debate training sessions. When one thinks of Legislative, one auto- matically thinks of Lifesavers. I'm sure that I personally bought enough of them to send the whole school to New York. Oh, well, it was for a good cause, and I'll probably be eating them again next year. They have kept me in good eats, as Well as inspiring me to practice my debating form. I thank you. Great art and artists. Every time that I happen to be going past rooms 230 and 234, there seems to be French in the air. It stirs my blood to think how lucky I was to have heard Professor B. L. Rideout speak about his stay in France, to have seen interesting slides and movies about France, and to have heard the Debussy records that the club played. I plan to follow in the footsteps of my dear greatgrandpa, Amos, who went to Paris with Ben Franklin. One afternoon when I was snooping around the building, thoroughly bored and looking for some excitement, I happened to peek into Room 233. You see, amateur hamming is one of my favorite hobbies. That is why I have followed the activities of the Mike and Key Club with such great interest. Last fall I helped the club erect a radio antenna on the high school roof. Since the boys set up a radio station, they have been working for general licences which allow the boys to operate their shortwave radio stations for an indefinite length of time. The licences are issued if an applicant passes an exam confirming his knowledge of radio theory and radio law and is able to translate Morse Code thirteen words a minute. Most of the boys have novice licenses now, myself included, so if you have heard strange noises about the school, you know that the Mike and Key Club has made a short-wave contact. I regret to say that it isn't something to eat-it's a game-and not a very lively one at that. The game is played on a board marked in red and black squares. Little wooden players called chess men are moved about the board. Sometimes there is a long wait between each move. I often get terribly sleepy watching them. At the first of the year the boys set up a thing called a tournament. The tournament had twelve rounds so that each boy got a chance to play everyone. This year the club used the Swiss system instead of the single knockout system. In the spring after the tournament was over they had a picnic. Sub Deb Club is one of my favorite clubs. They are always doing something interesting. The girls plan to do one project a month. To start the year off a bake sale was held to help raise money for their project. At Thanksgiving the club bought a turkey and members contributed some food to provide an Ithaca family with a Thanksgiving dinner. At Christmas their project was to fill food baskets for the Christmas bureau. The whole school was invited to participate and about five bushels of food were collected. The only trouble was that the food was in cans, and cans are one thing I just can not get my teeth through. At Easter the girls made Easter baskets for the children at the hospital. The best event of all was the club banquet in May. That's when I came in for my share! FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Much as I like the boys in this club, the most hair-raising experience I have ever had was being kicked by a cow on one of the field trips. The boys assured me afterwards Cwhile I was still licking my woundsl, that she didn't mean to kick me at all. The club had several interesting projects and activities this year. They gave away two calves to boys who showed outstanding ability and interest in dairy farm- ing. In return these boys will give the first heifers born to their cows to other boys. I also accompanied the boys in my club on several judging tours and contests. Now I'm learning all about farming, from eggs to oats, and from Ayrshires to harvesters. Surely one of the greatest aids in furthering our knowledge of what the teacher is talking about are the boys who operate the visual aids equipment. How they ever snap some half-dozen switches and buttons and end up with a movie is beyond me! Our operators do a fine job of helping students and teachers. Sometimes, just to test the operators' ability, I chew up a few frames to see whether they know what to do in an emergency. So far, they've always remained calm, cool, and collected. While dodging typewriter keys, I discovered that Commercial Club members were starting a scrapbook for keeping track of department doings. All the typing, filing and shorthanding seemed purposeless until I heard a regular secretary describe her job to the club. How could a business firm operate without one of these girls-of-all-work? One Tuesday afternoon I was looking around for something interesting to do when I came upon a session of Math Club. Randy Cole was speaking on infinity. A lot of what he said was beyond me and I think I have more brains than the average mouse. At another meeting Mrs. Greenburg was telling the members about her war-time job in rocket research. Mr. Wilhelm, a mathematics major at Cornell, talked about the work he was doing and gave some hints to people who are going into mathematics. One of the speakers who was very interesting was Professor Rosser from Cornell. Well, I picked up some crumbs of information from their meetings, but I wish I could have gone to the Math Club picnic. I can't imagine when they did the necessary work to produce the issues except when the door was closed and I couldn't squeeze under. Last October two members of the editorial Columbia Press Association Conference in New York. There they learned all about how to make a good yearbook. The first thing they did when they got back was to clean out the cupboard in room 133 where I have my nicest hiding place. After that everyone got to Work with lay- out pages, pictures and write-ups trying to meet those terrible deadlines. If you peeked in room 133 during a fourth period study hall you probably would see Pete Brown with pages and pages of layouts. Debbie Jones, art editor, dressed me up in the cutest clothes and then drew pictures of me. Real cheese- cake! It was funny to see all those reporters scurrying to the meetings of the different clubs and then struggling to get the write- ups in. Oh, so much work! Sometimes, though, I thought the deadlines would never be met. Well, when I become a grandparent what a story I'll be able to tell about my ex- periences working With the Annual Staff. staff and Mrs. Ward, advisor, Went to the Command decisions. 127 For For For For For For For For For our T0 MRS.
