' Dedication ,f We, the Class of 1956, dedicate our Annual to Kenneth W. Elmore, who, as our class adviser, has helped shape the pattern of our senior year. Mr. Elmorels advice and suggestions were always avail- able when needed, and because of them our active senior year was successful. We are grateful to him for the interest he showed in us as a class and as individuals. The time he gave to work with class officers and committees and also to help us prepare for the College Board Exams is appreciated. Those of us who had the privilege of being taught by Mr. Elmore will always remember his lively math classes and the talent he had for making this difficult subject clear. Another fond memory the class will carry with them is the sight of Mr. Elmore at Ithaca Highls sports events. His loyal support was an encouragement to team members and fans alike. May the dedication of this yearbook be an expression of our regard for Mr. Elmore. HJ Vtlhat is our life? Informative classes, active cluhs, thrilling football games. and dreamy dances-all of these merge to Weave the pattern of our life in Ithaca High. Vtfe of the l956 X1 lllllllll Staff have attempted to trace this pattern. The fundamental purpose of high school life is education. Most of our time at l.H.S. is spent in classrooms where facts and ideas are learned and applied. Outside the classroom, however, when we participate in extra-curricula r activities. we learn how to get along with others and gain experience in special interest helds such as sports and music. After four years of high school, the senior is prepared to graduate and continue his education or begin a career. The patterns which have heen formed during his stay in high school will guide him in the future. E83 l 5 To the Class of 1956: Seldom has a class made as good use of their time and the facilities at hand as our seniors. One hundred and two members have a four-year scholastic average of 2.00 or better. This is phenomenal. Your participation and lead- ership in school activities has been of the same high order. It has been an inspiration and a priv- lege to know you and to work with you. Your faculty wishes you well and, for the years ahead, leaves with you this thought. Concert Band Activities of this year's Concert Band con- sisted of practice and more practice, resulting in fine performances for the public. Membership in the band, as well as placement in sections, was on a competitive basis, and periodic try-outs and challenges were held throughout the year. Under the guidance of Mr. Battisti, the band spent much time reading different types of music and preparing for concerts. During the year the band played for a Board of Education meeting at Boynton Junior High and for a double school assembly. Band members traveled to Owego Free Academy to present an assembly concert in early May and concluded the year with the annual spring concert on May l8 at Foster Hall. Notable among the concert num- bers were lVloussorgsky's MGreat Gate of Kievv and '4Death and Transfigurationw by Richard Strauss. President ........ . . .Charles Dickinson Vice-President ..... ..... At Christmas thel Choir participated in two school concerts, an evening performance of vocal and instru- X mental music put on by students in the lthaca Public Schools and a school assembly. One of the most enjoy- able numbers was ulVlary Had a Baby in which Alice Bly sang the soprano solo. Another high point was reached when the orchestra joined with the Choir in 4'Shepherds' Farewell to the Holy Familyf' A program of Christmas music was also given for the lthaca Women's Club. A banquet was held on February 21 at Willard Straight, and Bruce Shapley acted as Master of Cere- monies. Pins were presented to outstanding members of the Choral and Glee Clubs. Annual Staff Because of the ideas gained at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference in New York City and the aid of three direct staff assistants, the Annual had an effective year. It all began with a successful subscription drive in October. Soon almost three hundred seniors had filled out their data sheets, which then were checked and typed before being sent to the printer. Page layouts were drawn up. and pictures of clubs. seniors, and fac- ulty were scheduled. 'llhe editorial staff received assign- ments for club write-ups. and the business staff solic- ited advertisements. At the beginning of lVlarcl1 the second subscription drive was held. After spring vacation proofreading and hnal preparation of the book was completed. The covers arrived. and Hnally the Annual was bound and ready for delivery. Editor ..... .... Club members learned more about Ia vie francaise by hearing many speakers, including two Ithaca High teachers. ln the fall Mrs. Ernstein showed slides of her visit to France, and in the spring Mr. Catalfano told of his war experiences. ln addition, Renee Sack spoke about her trip through Europe, and John Farrow and Barbara Black discussed French civilization. Science Institute Science Institute was organized last year for the purpose of supplementing ninth grade science and giv- ing an introduction to other sciences. This year nearly forty future scientists become members. As their main project the members cleaned out the Margaret M. Reidy Museum. A committee was formed to check the museum periodically to see that every- thing remained in order. In the spring, Science Insti- tute's meetings were spent preparing for the Ithaca Science Fair. During the year Held trips and demonstrations formed many of the programs. Chemistry, geology, and physics were the topics of three demonstrations. Mind reading was the subject of another demon- stration presented by Larry Phillips. During winter and spring, organizing the lthaca Science Fair for March lil and creating interest in it kept the members busy. Chess Club Chess Club decided to try a new method of run- ning their annual tournament this year. Instead of hav- ing two divisions, beginners and advanced players, there would only be one and a sudden-death tourna- ment would replace the usual round-robin. ln the first meeting of the year, after the new offi- cers had been elected, a committee consisting of Bruce Layton, Fred Weinhold, and Bill Wise was appointed to set up the schedule and rules for the tournament. An outstanding feature of these rules was that each match was to be won by two out of three games instead of a single game. Each year the Club has a dem- onstration plot of corn, wheat, and other crops. ln Feb- ruary the boys visited the Artificial Breeders Coopera- tive at Cornell. It is based on Ruth lmler's Sub-Debw column in the Ladies, Home Journal. As their goal the members have chosen to perform one service project each month. ln September they raised money by holding a bake sale, and in October, members entertained the children at the Reconstruction Home with a Hallowelen Party. For Christmas 3510 was donated to the Christmas Bureau for needy families. As their first project for the new year a basket of fruit was given to the Home for Elderly Ladies. ' Yorkers Yorker Club, a high school division of the New York State Historical Society, had a busy year studying the history of New York State. Among its projects was a quiz program moderated by Bruce Oliver at a meeting of the Dewitt Historical Society. Panel members puzzled over the identity of strange objects and answered questions on history. Some of the members appeared in costume, portraying historical characters, and Phoebe Mason played the melodeon. On February 10, eight lthaca Yorkers visited the Cortland Chapter and this visit was returned in late spring. These same girls were responsible for the attract- ive displays which appeared on the bulletin boards of the library. Jackets of books which might interest the student body were exhibited here.
