Introduced to you on this page is the school mascot, who symbolizes school spirit and repre- sents the pride of the students in their Alma .- gi I Mater. The history of Ithaca High's mascot is feast., ,I e 1. ,. unique, yet unfamiliar to most . . . fi . . s ix Q J The Class of l9fl-7 decided the school needed a ' 5,1 mascot. After much discussion, a deodorized if . e My skunk was ordered from the Charone Wild Ani- K A mal Ranch in Burlington, Wisccmnsin. The cost of Don Bemont holds first mascot. the skunk was fifteen dollars, which was covered by student contributions to the Skunk Fund. After an oflicial adoption, our mascot followed the football and basketball teams to all games. An I.H.S. student, Betsy Black, was responsible for the skunk on the bus and also did the honors at the games. She had him on a ribbon leash and paraded him up and down before the spectators. Plans were also made to let the skunk travel around with the band. He made his home with another student, Don Bemont. Here his favorite hiding place was behind a kitchen cabinet. Then in the spring of l948, the school mascot disappeared. He tore a hole in a screen door, which had been reinforced with heavy wire screening, and ran away. Revival of the skunk tradition occurred in 1953, when Pep Club was organized. The club members adopted the skunk as their mascot and named themselves the Little Red Peppers. Members of the club dressed as Papa, Mama, and Baby Skunk and entertained at basketball games and pep assemblies. The 1955 skunk is presented in the Annual with the hope that he will remain a tradition of I.H.S. We of the Annual staff proudly name him Pepper'7 and dedicate him to the task of guiding you through the pages of Ithaca High's 1955 . . . introducing HPepperl,7 yearbook' Janet Jones Editor tj-I Table of Contents Facultq Seniors Activities Sports Advertising 5 Dedication ln honor of his twenty-five years of service as principal of Ithaca High School, we, the Class of 1955, proudly dedicate our Annual to MR. Putting their thoughts for the future aside for a while, the Seniors of 1955 review memories of their fmal year at lthaca High School. The fall of the year was spent in organization of senior committees, clubs, dances, and cam- paigns. During Christmas vacation the senior pic- tures were taken for the Annual. On February 3, songstress Suzanne Stewart be- came Miss l.H.S. ln the spring, the class sold sta- tionery to raise money for the class gift to the school-risers for the auditorium stage. In April measurements were taken for the caps and gowns-making graduation seem much nearer. On the morning of May 13, Class Day, 16 . . .Mary Kay Clarey . . . .George Burrell . . .Yvonne Nagy .....Jean Gelder . . .Mr. Elmore the Seniors entertained the rest of the school with an assembly-a panel show called What's My Secret?H The afternoon of the same day found the class members at Enfield State Park enjoying their final picnic together. May 21 was the date of the Senior Ball, and its theme, Till We Meet Againfi seemed very appropriate. The month of June brought sober and serious thoughts. After successful bouts with Regents, the seniors were ready to celebrate at their banquet in the Statler Hotel, ,lune 25. Graduation exercises were held at Bailey Hall on ,lune 27. To the strains of Pomp and Circum- stancew the Seniors of 1955 bid farewell to Ithaca High. As this year's Junior Class, they have played an active role in school life. Early in April, twenty-one juniors were in- ducted into the National Honor Society. April 14, the Junior Class Assembly, a show using numbers from HDeep in My Heartf' was presented to the school. The crowning touch for this busy week was the Junior Prom-L'Mou1in Rougcnfheld on Friday night, April 15. 44 . . . .Patricia Mahool . . . . . .David Foster . . . . . .Patricia Mack . . . . . .David Temeles Mrs. Taber, Mr. Pfaff The Junior Class gift to the school was two typewriters for the Tattler ollice. John Driscoll On November 19, forty-seven members of the Ithaca High School band, orchestra, and senior choir traveled by bus to Waverly, New York, to participate in the Sectional All-State Music Con- ference. Upon their arrival in Waverly, the stu- dents were assigned to private homes for their overnight stay. There were two rehearsals the first day-one in the afternoon and another that evening. A dance was given after the evening rehearsal so that all members at the conference could meet one another. There were two more rehearsals the next day, and the concert was held in the eve- ning. The citizens of Waverly filled the auditor- ium to hear the orchestra, band, and choir under the leadership of Dr. Harry King, Mr. Walter Neisling, and Professor Donald Bube. In December, Kay Walls, Erna Olafson, David Moore, Suzie Stewart, and Connie Conrad were selected to represent Ithaca High School at the state-wide music conference in Rochester. In the spring Erna and Dave continued to bring honor to I.H.S. by being selected for the All-Eastern Music Conference in Boston, Massachusetts, at- tended by delegates from thirteen states. 53 I All-StCltQ Erna and Dave were chosen as Ithaca's delegates to the Eastern All-State Conference at Boston. September was spent in choosing staff mem- bers and pooling ideas for the theme and design- ing of the yearbook. The sales campaign was held in October and a big poster was designed and placed in the main hall to remind students to purchase their 1955 Annuals. November and De- cember started the club picture-taking, and An- nual photographers were busily snapping candids ii y Proofreading means work for the Annual staff. f54l of the school. In January, club write-ups were assigned to the editorial staff, and when February ended, our cover had been designed and ordered. When the new black-and-white covers arrived in April, the proud stall' knew they were going to have an un- usual book. Deadlines came and passed, and the first of May found the Annual staff hurrying to beat the clock-proud of their work and hopeful for a successful yearbook. Editor ........... .... I.H.S. thus permanently retained the Bingham- ton Press Trophy, symbolic of the Southern Tier Conference supremacy. At the season's outset three returning lettermen were lost for the early games, George Burrell with an appendectomy, and Tom Decker and ,lim Upper with injuries. In the opening game, I.H.S. and E.F.A. battled to an 0-0 draw. Hornell, Bingo Central, and Bingo North were easily conquered by the fast- moving Ithaca team. Paced by Al Nelson, Ithaca returned from Elmira victorious over Southside, 27-6. In the season's roughest game, Johnson City bowed to Ithaca, I5-13 on a last bad pass from center. Auburn handed the Ithacans their only loss, 20-l3, scoring on two desperation passes. At the season's end I.H.S. was a polished club, so polished, in fact, that they routed a ponder- ous U.E. team, 20-6, in the season final, and thus the Ithaca team secured their third straight title. Perhaps the brightest event was the selection of Jim Upper to the All-S.T.C. team. He was the first I.H.S. cager since Jim Myers to make it. Upper, team captain, was the leading Ithaca scorer, with an average of over 17 points a game. Bob Brady, Tom Decker, Andy Jamison, and Jerry Langdon completed the starting five. After this season of ups and downs, all players were enthusiastic and optimistic about next year's team which will be captained by Bill Leagans and Bob Lupo. High spots this past year included two wins over division-champ Elmira Free Academy, a sound thrashing of Cortland in the Sectionals, and the near upset of Binghamton Central in the sectional finals. Low spots were the drubbing Vestal handed I.H.S. and the two regular season setbacks ad- ministered by Cortland. 1 Jim Upper scores 2 of the record 36 he tossed against Lakemont. Vestal snapped Ith- acals winning streak at 75 consecutive wins, but the Ithacans avenged themselves in the return match by trouncing Vestal 37-2.
