14 .fella ffiam the Zcliiafi Dear Georgef In compiling this book, we have endeavored to capture some of the spirit, activity, and friendliness of an American high school. We have done our best to show you, a student in the schools of Greece, how a young adult functions in a democracy, and to give you a pic- ture ofa typical American high school. During the three years we have been in senior high school, we have been interested in watching you, through your letters, develop in your personality and thinking. We seniors have also grown and broadened our scope of wisdom, but we know we shall have much more to learn, once we are set on our own feet after graduation from high school. The Annual is only a small way to convey to someone in another country the attitude of the Americans toward this essential and im- portant period of youth. As an introduction to the Annual, we shall present to you the administration-the men and women responsible for the manner in which our education is carried out .... 4' George Efthymiou, a. Greek war orphan, was adopted as a foster child by the Student Association of the Ithaca High School in 1950. X41

Eecficaifion Serenely looking back on our high school careers, we, the Class of '53, find we have a special liking for Oliver York. We have come to recognize Mr. York as a leader in his many activities. ln our business classes we came to know him as the director of the Commercial Depart- ment. When we looked for job opportunities, we went to see him as head of the Placement Bureau. When we at- tended night school, we knew him still again as our principal. Yet, beyond all these things, there were a thousand and two times when something special had to be done, and he came with a smile and a Hin to help us do it. With great pleasure we dedicate our Annual to Mr. York. Nl
