WILLIAM ZWERMAN Cover and Drawings by Fred Thomas i31 14 .fella ffiam the Zcliiafi Dear Georgef In compiling this book, we have endeavored to capture some of the spirit, activity, and friendliness of an American high school. We have done our best to show you, a student in the schools of Greece, how a young adult functions in a democracy, and to give you a pic- ture ofa typical American high school. During the three years we have been in senior high school, we have been interested in watching you, through your letters, develop in your personality and thinking. We seniors have also grown and broadened our scope of wisdom, but we know we shall have much more to learn, once we are set on our own feet after graduation from high school. The Annual is only a small way to convey to someone in another country the attitude of the Americans toward this essential and im- portant period of youth. As an introduction to the Annual, we shall present to you the administration-the men and women responsible for the manner in which our education is carried out .... 4' George Efthymiou, a. Greek war orphan, was adopted as a foster child by the Student Association of the Ithaca High School in 1950. X41 7a6fe of Ganlenifi FACULTY . . SENIORS . . ACTIVITIES . . . SPORTS . . ADVERTISING . . . I I Eecficaifion Serenely looking back on our high school careers, we, the Class of '53, find we have a special liking for Oliver York. We have come to recognize Mr. York as a leader in his many activities. ln our business classes we came to know him as the director of the Commercial Depart- ment. When we looked for job opportunities, we went to see him as head of the Placement Bureau. When we at- tended night school, we knew him still again as our principal. Yet, beyond all these things, there were a thousand and two times when something special had to be done, and he came with a smile and a Hin to help us do it. With great pleasure we dedicate our Annual to Mr. York. Nl .s n FAJELM-T27 1'- l.............. H F , Af ' 'N 'H' N Maauvse x F 5' f rv .5 X5 ............ J if 2 'R Dr. William L. Un- usual or usual, deluded or sane, the members did distinguished things. Bill Zwerman, a class member in good stand- ing, wrote a scientifically fantastic Senior Play, The Night the Heirs Stood Still. The class of '53 produced it and went on to sponsor the Miss IHS Contest and to elect a participant in the DAR Good Citizenship Contest. They designed the Handbook, sponsored Senior Day, and man- aged their Banquet. The Senior Ball was orna- mented with underwater trappings and sunken ships. And with lovely memories, on the twenty- third of June, the distinguished Senior Class, en mane, graduated. U61 v ,Rauf 1 I 1 . . D' k L C5 ,' 4 1 U uvnsb. Chris Petito lltunquvtj, Thalia. This year's juniors had a busy year. Members of the Junior Class of IHS began the school year by making their choice of class rings. Then they started setting so many home- work records that, every time report cards came out, the Class headed the Honor Roll. In the spring seven percent ofthe Junior Class instead of the usual five percent were inducted into the National Honor Society because of the Class's unusually high scholastic record. The Junior Prom was named Dreamer's Holi- day. And everyone agreed it was a clream. E411 ? Q WW N :Ar sb l V?-7 1 I X Q3c: N 0 43 Rf s if W. .1- fa 4.1 E421 AJGTUWZYTUES .nn A A 43 A ff if ,L L f ! Student Council Student Council started the year with a suc- cessful Junior Chest Drive and later sent repre- NM sentatives to Student Council conferences in gg X Johnson City and Syracuse. This governing body fl N provided Ithaca High with assemblies, noon- X Ji' l S X hour activities, and the lost and 'Found bureau. l Z X 9 Student Council continued to support our Sh Greek foster child, George Efthymiou. In addi- gi tion, this year the council established a fund for E-S5 students who are ill. The huge pep rally in the fall was also a new Student Council proiect with the cooperation of the teams, the cheerleaders, and the band. E441 Empire Boys' State Ithaca High sent five iuniors to Empire Boys' State at Colgate University. Once the boys ar- rived, they began studying their lessons by setting up city and state governments of their own. After electioneering, they elected mayors, governors, aldermen, and legislators, and the seven-day conference was deemed excellent experience by the students. Douglas Brew, Bill Zwerman, Lloyd Mattocks, Jim Ferris, George Mathewson. National l-lonor Society Four standards are required of all students eligible for membership in the National Honor Society: scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Outstanding members of the iunior and senior classes are chosen for membership by a tac- ulty committee. Two inductions this year were held, in November and March. This is WIHS, your high school station, bringing you the latest how, why, and where news of the Ithaca High School. Every morning, each homeroom is provided with this cheery greeting, presented by care- fully chosen broadcasters. The students are chosen by audition and are then put on trial for the first term. The final staff is chosen at the end of the term for the rest of the school year. The same system applies to the radio technicians who make the broadcast avail- able. Library Club In the fall the members of Library Club are instructed about all types of library work, then they work in the library for two periods a week and occasionally after school hours. Besides their usual library work, Library Club members held a Christmas party this year. Then during Book Week, November 16- 27, a tea was given for all high school faculty, office staff, and Board of Education members. As an innovation this year, the girls pur- chased club pins imprinted with a book. Wills --Fits: limi-: Elmae Adams, Joan Clarke, Dick Lacy, Bill Zwcrman. Sue Kelly, Mary Clark.
