A LAN BERGSTEN lace-i Cover designed by BARBARA HALL Little Red created by JOE PATTERSON We fjaedenli ufillffe Ref! Many, many years ago there roamed the hills and valleys around Cayuga Lake a little Indian named Little Red . One day white men came and settled where Little Red's people had their gardens, orchards and hunting grounds. Little Red was well-known to them in the beginning, but as their city grew and more people came, LittIe Red gradually faded into the background. When Little Red disappeared,,no one seemed to have noticed or to remember. The white man building his cities, factories, roads, and farms had forgotten Little Red. However, the ghost of Little Red is still with us. We can not forget him as the last of a race of fearless, independent, liberty- loving people. They were the true rugged individualists. As a re- minder of his people Little Red occasionally visits Ithaca High School. This book sets forth some of his experiences during the past year. We hope he was pleased with what he saw. mfg If eww THE FACULTY . WHO GUIDED AND INSPIRED US -5. T1-1. I 225 1 yi 'I K .:x Q 5 -x ug G I P5 Q?-S THE SENIORS . WHO WORKED AND ACHIEVED THE CLUBS . . Through her classes in history she has brought to us a better understand- ing of our relationships to our fellow men. Her candid and pithy observations on political and social issues have given us a vivid picture of the world in which we live. She assisted in bringing the National Honor Society to Ithaca High and has served as an advisor for the past two years. Our best wishes go with Miss Robinson as she leaves Ithaca High. .Y V ,F k Qawlz' Jr Q2 X, lf, c f, T S W U4 -, 1' Q Q Q i Q , .' Q 2 2 I I NS-ww , X , s. This class promoted the Miss I.H.S. Con- test, sponsored the Senior War Dance, or Prom, the Senior Day, and held the Senior Feast. This class also prepared the Handbook of helpful signs for the incoming students. They elected Mimi Speno as a participant in the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Contest. Truly they are wise men and women. Miss Emily Malti was the winner of the fifth annual Miss IHS contest held February 28. The selection, based on talent, beauty, and popularity, was made from a group of twelve contestants. Emily chose as her presentation the Hun- garian Dance, Czardes by Monti for violin and piano. She was accompanied by her sister, Ruth Malti. Emily's wide interests are indicated by her many activities which include membership in the orchestra where she is co-concert mistress, vice-president of Legislative, a cheerleader, a member of the Student Council, Forsythia Hi-Y, Annual staff, and the National Honor Society. Since the class doings seemed so important to her, I decided that everybody should hear about them. The class started the year with the usual high interest in the class rings. Next, the class concentrated its efforts on the Junior Class Play, lt's a Woman's World. The production, written by Bill Zwerman and staged in the thirtieth century, told how a boy from the twentieth century solved a mystery of the thirtieth century. These are the accomplishments list- ed by this year's Ithaca High School football team. Coming out of almost a decade of listless- ness, the Little Red gridders chalked up an excellent season's record of five wins, two losses, and one tie. Coach John Jaffurs started the season with a young and green squad, and, building around a few senior stalwarts, came out with a top-notch team which lost only two games and finished second in the Southern Tier conference. IHS started the season on the right foot when it upset Binghamton North 6-0, the first win over this school in eight years. ln this game the gridders, though green, showed that they were the most spirited and eager team that Ithaca had fielded in some time, and also indicated that they might have the ability to lift IHS from the football doldrums. ln their second game the hopes of the Little Red were temporarily smashed when a superior Elmira Free Academy squad rolled to a 19-0 win. Showing come-back qualities that were to mark late season play, the Red and Gold then rolled to three consecutive triumphs over Rochester West High School, Union Endicott, and Auburn, before being held to a 13-13 tie by the defending Southern Tier Champions, John- son City. From this point the come back kids scored in the last minute to defeat their next foe, Elmira Southside. ln the final game of the season the Little Red Warriors came out on the short end of a 14-7 decision against Binghamton Central, but the loss was unimportant since it was now clear that the 1951 Ithaca High football team would long be remembered as the team that once again brought football glory to the Halls of IHS. l78l l 1 . , .-gilwr ' 5. With Captain Jim Myers as a nucleus, the team registered an over-all record of 12-9, and was runnerup in the class AA section 4 playoffs. This was the fifth time in five years that Tatascore-coached teams have reached the finals in Sectional competition. IHS started the season with a close 48-43 loss to Union-Endicott, and went on to finish fifth in the conference standings with a TO-8 record. Included in the ten wins was an upset victory of Southern Tier champs Binghamton Central. Ithaca finished the season strong with two straight Sectional wins over Elmira Southside and Elmira Free Academy before losing to UE 69-59 in a hard-fought battle for the champion- ship. Jim Myers, All-Conference selection, led the team in scoring for the second straight year with 344 points. Uldis Hollanders and Jim Harden developed into strong rebounders in the latter stages of the season. Two other seniors, Bill Freeman and Frank Speno, also contributed to the team's success. i301 First Row-Coach Jatfurs, Stu Lewis, Pinky Reynolds, Bob Flynn, Querino Orzino, Orlando Turco, Tim Woodin, Ned Tllfdi, Walt Farrell, Dick Bushey, Bob Lynch, Maurey Bristol. They annexed their fifth Section IV title, nearly doubling the score of the next contender. Placing seven men in the finals, the Little Red took five individual titles: Bob Flynn in the 120 lb. class, Querino Orzino in the 127 lb. class, Walt Farrell in the 145 lb. class, Tim Woodin in the 165 lb. class, and Bob Lynch in the 175 lb. class. The feature match of the year was held at Barton Hall on January 26, when the Little Red met Baldwin High School of Baldwin, Long Island. IHS took a 26-10 victory in a hard fought match which saw four of Baldwin's undefeated men go down in defeat, and two other unde- feated Baldwinites draw with their opponents. None of lthaca's undefeated grapplers had their records spoiled. A record crowd of fifteen hundred spectators witnessed the meet. Beginning their season with a 33-5 victory, the Little Red went on to humble their arch rival, Vestal, by scores of 23-13 and 27-8. In meets with opponents from without the Section, IHS took victories over Auburn, 41-3 and 35-2, a 41-2 win over Geneva, and a 35-3 triumph over Watertown in the season's final meet. Little Redmen Querino Orzino and Walt Farrell were the only lthacans to finish the sea- son without a defeat in dual meet competition and the Sectionals, while Dick Bushey and Capt. Harpo Turco claim undefeated records for the dual meet season. The seven lettermen assumed the bulk of the field and track responsibilities. A four meet schedule was planned along with the annual Western Zone Meet, the Sec- tionals, and the Intersectionals. Deibler was the only returning Ithacan to have won Sectional honors last year. He was the l95'l champ in the mile run. The track team ended a successful season with the Intersectionals at West Point. With six returning lettermen, Captain and catcher Bill Freeman, Third baseman Jim Myers, first baseman Joe Gessini, pitcher Hank Baker, outfielder Frank Speno, and shortstop Carl Vail, Wheeler formed a near veteran infield and battery.
