EDITORIAL The young people of today are entering a world filled with international disagreement and armed conflict. In many minds world peace is followed by a question mark. All these threats, and yet, look around and see how fortunate we in the United States really are. The average laborer here has the greatest pur- chasing power in the history of the worldg profits are upg unemployment is low, the living standard is very high. Now, look a little farther. The world seems to be divided into two sec- tions, each trying to gain complete control. Many times before in history a nation has set out to conquer the world. Each in turn has failed after bloody attempts. Today it seems to us that another nation is about to. repeat the actions of its savage ancestors, the Huns. Yet unlike the time when the Huns overran Europe, there is now an international organization striving to keep the world at peace. Here today as a working reality is a clearing house for international differences. This binding power is the United Nations. Through mediation and concilia- tion, serious conflicts in Palestine, Kashmir, Indonesia and others have been settled. By giving countries a place to meet and discuss informally as well as formally, the Berlin blockade was lifted and other problems talked over and agreements reached. Never before in the history of mankind has such a program worked. It is up to us to keep it working for into our hands comes the responsibility of carrying out the ideals and work of the United Nations, the first tangible hope of lasting peace.
