N149 i -I L1 The NNUAL 1 9 5 1 VOLUME 36 Published by The ANNUAL Staff ITHACA H I G H S C H 0 0 L Ithaca, New York Editor MAR JORIE BURREL EDITORIAL The young people of today are entering a world filled with international disagreement and armed conflict. In many minds world peace is followed by a question mark. All these threats, and yet, look around and see how fortunate we in the United States really are. The average laborer here has the greatest pur- chasing power in the history of the worldg profits are upg unemployment is low, the living standard is very high. Now, look a little farther. The world seems to be divided into two sec- tions, each trying to gain complete control. Many times before in history a nation has set out to conquer the world. Each in turn has failed after bloody attempts. Today it seems to us that another nation is about to. repeat the actions of its savage ancestors, the Huns. Yet unlike the time when the Huns overran Europe, there is now an international organization striving to keep the world at peace. Here today as a working reality is a clearing house for international differences. This binding power is the United Nations. Through mediation and concilia- tion, serious conflicts in Palestine, Kashmir, Indonesia and others have been settled. By giving countries a place to meet and discuss informally as well as formally, the Berlin blockade was lifted and other problems talked over and agreements reached. Never before in the history of mankind has such a program worked. It is up to us to keep it working for into our hands comes the responsibility of carrying out the ideals and work of the United Nations, the first tangible hope of lasting peace. Four years of work and play are drawing to a close, leaving happy memories of busy days. We'll always remember the Hrsts - the first day we were really high school students, the first after school club we joined, the Hrst time our names appeared in the Tattler. Our junior year brought formal organization as a class. There was more studying to be done, more extra-curricular activities to attend to, and more to be accomplished. Results - Saturday Night in Central Parki' with its New York skyline, water-filled pool, and park benches 5 Rocket to the Moon with its live volcanos and moon maidens, and the trophy cases, our gift to the school. As seniors we have tried to do everything. We were big bugs at last, the heads of clubs, com- mittees and the school. There was another or- iginal play Wake Up, My Boy , the traditional Miss I.H.S. contest, a Senior Carnival, and the lively but dreamy Show Boat . awake Up, My Boys All this we carry with us as we enter the new life ahead. In the only other dual meet Vestal again won with a clean sweep, placing the first five men. Diebler, hampered by a knee injury, was unable to run. Five members of the team traveled to Watertown for an upstate invitational meet, where they did well placing fourth against stiff competition from such schools as Mount Pleasant, Watertown, Utica Proctor, Union Endicott, and Whitesboro. Diebler showed up well placing fifteenth among the 120 competitors. In the sectionals at Vestal Ithaca placed third behind Vestal and Bingo North, one step ahead of last year's fourth place. Vestal won placing the first five men, with Diebler running sixth, and DuMont placing eighth for Ithaca. However, using veterans Captain Billy Poole and the rugged rebounder Don Clark as a nucleus, Coach Joe Tatascore turned out a team that surprised the whole Southern Tier Conference and the town of Ithaca as well. After starting the season by dropping a 35-33 decision to Elmira Free Academy, thus snapping the 37-game win- ning streak built up over the past two years, the Little Redmen went on to cop Ithaca High's third straight Southern Tier Conference title, and then finished second to Binghamton Central in the Section IV tournament. Sixteen wins and five losses was the team's over-all record, three of the setbacks coming at the hands of the Central Bulldogs. In conference play the Little Red's mark was 13-3, with Central and Elmira Free Academy tied for second, 12-4. Sectional playoffs found the Ithacans chalking up vic- tories over Cortland and Waverly before succumbing to Central in the finals at Cornell's Barton Hall, 67-55. Jimmy Myers, captain-elect and the only returning mem- ber of the team for the 1951-52 campaign, was the indi- vidual scoring leader with 261 points, while Dick Haynor with his deadly ,shot and uncannily accurate foul shoot- ing was close with 255. Clark, a reserve center in 1948- 49 who didn't play the following year, blossomed out as one of the 1eague's top rebounders, though standing only six feet tall. 86 kgs --na. ni' 55N hw- i A ii , z - rl 'Nan YD 1 y 1 4 fx il... . 5 if 4' . 1 f ' K v f f Eg .A w N ', , i l U' g .M 5 if Q V . wiimimmw VVKLL A f.., Y I ff, V A I 3 Q1 ik Ji' 1 X, 1 -Mm A A ,,.M.,m:z'f.
