RACINA O I In 1875 the Board of Education founded our vocal music department so that students might receive instruction not only in the study of voice but also in the appreciation of vocal music. Shortly after this, the first Glee Club was organized. A number of years later, in 1913, the girls' Choral Club, a parallel to the Glee Club, was started. Annually, both clubs combine to give a Thanks- giving Concert at which time all alumni are invited to return and sing the old school songs and to renew their pledge of loyalty to Ithaca High. The Thanksgiving Concert, with its unique set-up, has inspired other high schools and colleges throughout the United States to follow the idea. For this concert and for the Spring Cantata, Miss Bryant selects as soloists alumni who have chosen music as a life work. Perhaps one of the greatest achievements of the vocal music department is the large number of students who have been encouraged to continue in a musical career. More than one hundred alumnae of the Choral Club and many Glee Club men have become professional musicians because they have been taught not only to love their music but to love to give it. In 1915, the Board of Education organized a department of Instrumental Music, pioneering a movement which gave to the youth of Ithaca an opportunity then enjoyed by few schools in this country. The objective was to give every pupil under the supervision of the Board of Education an opportunity to know instrumental music for its own sake, to place musical advantages within the reach of every child in the public schools, and to discover exceptional ability so that further develop- ment of natural talent might be encouraged. Immediately, our high school orchestra and band were organized, and since then both clubs have succeeded in living up to the highest standards of performance and general musicianship. Annually, both organizations combine to present a spring concert. Members of the orchestra provide music for the Spring Play, the annual Cantata, the assemblies, and also take part in the Christmas Recital. The band attends and plays at football games and pep rallies, in addition to which it may give special outdoor concerts. Selected musicians from both groups participate in an All-State Band and Orchestra. In past years we have been very fortunate, as we are now, in having competent, well-trained music teachers. This year more than 350 of our fellow classmates enjoyed the benefits of a music education in school. Under the expert guidance of Miss Bryant, Miss Finch, Miss Marsh, and Mr. Racina, the music department is forging ahead and becoming more and more important and materially helpful to the school as a whole. This is shown by the many students who have gone into music as a life work-who are now teaching, studying, and performing in schools, conserva- tories, and concert halls all over the country. It is with deepest gratitude that we dedicate this Annual to the Ithaca High School Music Department. We thank you for your patience and understanding in teaching us to, Say it with music. Oilicers: President, James Gibbs Jr., Vice-President, Doris Mayo: Secretary, Helen Lyman: Treasurer, Justine Finneran. Committee Heads, left to right: Miriam Barkdoll, Tam Bradfield, Katherine Woodbury, James Gibbs, Jeanne Alter, Alison Bliss, Mr. Timmel. , This year the junior class put its best foot forward by organizing for the first time in twenty-three years. After election of otiicers in December, they began the second term with a round of activities. They bought a school flag and accessories and established six annual awards for juniors. They produced a junior Day Assembly patterned after the traditional senior counterpart. Feet flew not only forward, but in all directions at a prom, the year's highlight, which benefited the newly formed Youth Bureau. The juniors and their capable advisor, Mr. Timmel, look back on an enjoy- able experience, which they hope will make a more outstanding senior class next year. The band also contributed much to the tune of community cooperation by parading for the Community Chest and appearing in two massed Concerts at Bailey Hall with the Ithaca College and Cornell hands. Several of the more outstanding members represented thc band at the All-State sec- tional at Auburn. The climax of the years program was the favorable performance in the annual concert in March. Since no one was professional, no one needed to feel shy about presenting his work of Genius, It was ln this club that members could praise each other's work and criticize the masters. The traditional theater party was given in February. Members had dinner together and, then, saw a produc- tion of William Shakespeare-'s, The Taming of the Shrew. Mrs. Gage and Professor Bristow -Adams gave lectures to the club. The essay contest was the climax of the year's program. It is a generally conceded fact that the school day would be incomplete without the Newscasters' Staff which eliminates general confusion by its clear, concise newscasts every morning. i I The excellent facilities of WIHS, with its competent staff of announcers and engineers, were indispensable in 'Xi 10t1V3tll'lg various campaigns such as those to aid the Red Cross, the Community Chest, and Mrs. Pearsall's school in ennessee. One of their special projects was keeping the parents informed frequently during Parents' Night in the fall. It ainit necessarily so, but the staff tried to work with a maximum of efficiency and a minimum of error. Probably the only school organization that made a definite and valuable contribution every day, the Newscasters' staff deserves a real vote of thanks. BASKETBALL The 1946-47 edition of the I. H. S. basketball team had to eontend with some of the best teams that the Southern tier schools have had in years.. 'l'he Little Red startedits season with four successive losses to Vestal, Johnson City, Bingo Central, and Bingo North. Ithaca then journeyed to Cortland, where it took its first win of the season, and then went on to win the next four games in succession. I. H. S.'s winning streak was snapped by Johnson City on our home court. The Little Red took its next game easily from Endicott, but went below the .500 mark when I. H. S. lost its next four games to Auburn, Bingo Central, Endicott, and Bingo North. The Ithaca five then tried vainly to regain the percentage of .5004 and at the end of the regular season, they succeeded. I. H. S. then went on to the Section IV State Sectionals at Endicott. Luck was against the Little Red as they repeatedly missed the basket and were eliminated in tournament play. The Little Red V.'s had a rather successful season as they won twelve games and lost six. Coach Larry Wheeler had good material to work with this year since nine men on the team were lettcrmen of last year. The team was eo-cuptained by Don McGraw and Bob DeKay, who made two good leaders for the baseball team this year. Except for three positions, the personnel of the team this year was the same as that of the championship 1945 team, so at the beginning of the season the outlook was bright. The first two weeks, practice was indoors, and when the weather was just right, the field was crowded with enthusiastic fellows. The team was ready and waiting for its opener with Vestal High School. The team used the YMCA pool for practice and competed in one meet this year: at the State Sectionals at Colgate University Pool, on April 5. The ten-man swim team went to the sectionals with only one month's practice and with no adult coaching and brought back a second place in the sectionals. WRESTLING This year's wrestling team, coached by Bill Layton, was quite a success, losing only one match and having two of the boys crowned sectional champs. Butch Nicholas and Walter Purcell triumphed in the seetionals, and the team as a whole placed third behind Norwich and Van Hornesville. 86 e k+ TENNIS Tennis was brought back into the sportlight last year for the first time since before the war, and now the squad is completing its second successive season. Three lettermen returned to the squad this year, and at the beginning of the season things looked Tl little bright for the tennis team. Many of the boys were new on the team this year, but were somewhat experienced in handling the racket. Mr. Timmel again coached the tennis players this year, and he had twelve capable fellows to make a good team. The squad this year was, in general, a little taller and a little faster than lust yt-:tr's. GOLF Golf is :t comparatively new sport to Ithaca High School, having been revived last year for the first time since before the war, Under the capable coaching of Edgar E. Bredbenner, the team gradually got into form for its opener :against Binghamton North here at home. Five returning lettermen were on the squad this year, and the team started its practice indoors for the hrst two weeks of practice. The team had a ten-game schedule to meet this year.
