During the war years, we have seen, both negatively and positively, the tremendous importance of unity and cooperation: negatively, we have heard of the horrors of war and have known of some of its evils here at home, positively, we have known of some heart-warming examples of cooperation, generosity, and unselfishness in order that democracy and liberty might win in World War II. Since the war has ended, we can appreciate the joy of peace. Going back through history, we know that in all the major successes of our country, the spirit of cooperation and unity has been fundamental. In our own school, too, we have seen, through our classwork and various' activities, that cooperation is essential. Although we are conscious that we have sometimes failed to achieve complete harmony, yet we feel that fundamentally the spirit of I. H. S. is cooperation. Accordingly, as we were discussing the merits of various themes for our yearbook this year, we Finally agreed on The Spirit of Cooperation-the Spirit of I. H. S.,', which the reader will find floating through the pages of our 1946 Annual. - The year of 1945-1946 has been a good one for us at Ithaca High-thanks to the Spirit of Cooperation! Let us always maintain this spirit in our dealings with others. Further, may we all realize that, as we are the future leaders of America, it is our responsibility continually to improve our ability to work and live together in harmony with our daily associates and with our families, and, on a broader level, we must see that the spirit extends to national and international living so that the men to Whom we have dedicated this Annual will not have died in vain. We of Ithaca High School were saddened by the news that Jack Swarthout an outstanding member of the senior class, died March 10, 1946. 5 Jack was a leader at Ithaca High. He participated actively in the German, Latin, and Math clubs, but his greatest interests were in the fields of science and music. He served not only as president and vice-president of the Science Club, but also as the assistant in the science laboratories during the last two years. He was president of the orchestra and a member of the band. Besides his ability in leadership, Jack possessed the qualities of an outstanding scholar. His desire to do everything well is exemplified by his straight average throughout his high school years. Further, he had a winning personality and a deep interest in others Which attracted many friends during his two-and-one-half years in Ithaca. As one of -Iack,s friends very aptly stated when he heard of his death, Jack has but passed another test. sf ilu fllivmnrizxm Mr. Royal Gilkey On April 14 of this year, We were shocked to learn of the death of Mr. Royal Gilkey, who gave twenty-three years of conscientious service to the Ithaca High School. He showed always a sincere desire to do right, and, by his many long hours of untiring service, indi-- cated his intense interest in students, in their activities, and in their education. The student body, the faculty, and par- ticularly the science department of the Ithaca High School will long miss this kindly man, of Whom it can be truly said, He was a gentleman? Zin vmnriam Miss Catherine Welch All this year, we have been conscious of the empty space left by the death of Miss Welch, one of our finest teachers and foremost personalities. Although in poor health for several years, she gave unstintingly of her time, her skill, her knowledge, and her personality to classes in French and Spanish, as well as to the Spanish Club, of which she was the faculty advisor and guiding spirit. Dry humor, infallible tact, and a wide, rich background of culture and travel gave added depth and interest to her teaching, not only because of the wealth of interest- ing side-lights which She had always at her command, but also because of the fascinating and charming personality which were impressed on every student who came into her classroom. i 3 ,F A? fgfwi if . Senior Class Officers SENIOR CLASS 1946 v The Senior Class of 1946 started the year in an early and original way by presenting The Football Hop on November 3, 1945, at the Fall Creek School Auditorium. This very informal dance took place on a Saturday night after the Auburn football game, and everyone present expressed high approval. A This year's senior class also originated two new senior committees. One, the Publicity committee, takes care of publicizing all senior functions. The other, the Handbook committee, organized a new handbook in which will be found all the information that a student could wish to know about the high school. This hand- book is intended to be a type of memorial from the class of '46 to the classes of years to come. The Senior Ball, in traditional fashion, was presented at the end of the year. This semi-formal dance, was, as always, one of the best remembered of the year. U81 Sfnior Ball: Irwitatiom. Led by President John Geherin, the first meeting of the year was called to order October 8, 1945, with all the representatives showing up for a yearls work. During the year, Student Council backed several Red Cross drives. At the end of the first one of these, the students sent forty Red Cross boxes overseas. The next drive was the collection of Easter cards for the patients at Sampson Hospital to send home, coupled with a drive to collect books to be put in a Merchant Marine Sea-Going Library. Student Council also sponorsed successful pep rallies for each of the two major sports-basketball and football. In January, the council put on a high school drive for the city-wide Dick La France Fund. The school donated nearly Eve hundred dollars to this worthy CHUSC. Student Council closed the 1945-46 school year feeling that they had done a fine job. In the variety of interesting meetings during the year, the members have learned Spanish songs, have seen movies with Spanish sound tracks, and have had excellent speakers. They participated in the assembly given by the language clubs and presented programs for the junior High and Senior High Parent-Teacher Associations. Of the many interesting meetings, an outstanding one was provided by Mrs. Karl Butler, who spoke about experiences she had While living in South America, and showed pictures and curios which she had collected there. All in all, the Spanish Club had a very successful year. Mary Alex . Ana Amaral . Charlotte Ball . Betsy Black . Phyllis Boothroyd . Rosalie Brown . Marian Burns . Pat Burns . Helen Cooke . The Council's duties are to handle all financial matters, to formulate schedules, and to arrange transportation for the athletic teams. This year, with the removal of war-time travel restrictions, the council sponsored many pre-war activities. The council members efficiently planned and carried out full schedules in football, basketball, baseball, track, golf, and tennis. Tn addition, under their supervision, teams were sent to state wrestling, volleyball, and bowling sectionals. All these activities were difficult to arrange because of a nation-wide shortage of athletic equipment. The council is composed of Mr. Dixon, chairman and general manager, Mrs, Woodams, secretary, Mr. Timmel, tennis coach and treasurer of the councilg Mr. Bliss, principal, Mr. Bredbenner, director of physical education, Mrs. Miller, director of all girls' sports, Mr. Tatascore, coach of boys, basketball and track teams, iVlr. Pierce, who coached football, lVlr. Hickson, baseball coach, and Mr. Farnsworth, who coached the golf team. The Athletic Council deserves to be complimented on its efficient planning of many activities which have added greatly to the school curricula. mi DRUM MAIORETTES Tryouts for drum majorettes were held in September, and lfleanor Williams and Mathildzi Cicchetti were chosen to complete the corps. Dressed in new white satin uniforms, the drum majorettes made a pretty sight as they participated with the band at the football games and parades. Marian Alexander and Dorothy Snedden, who are not pictured, left the group in November. CHEERLEADERS The red and gold cheerleaders did much this year to inspire school spirit at all the football and basketball games. As the squad was enlarged to include twelve members, Ithaca High was well represented at the out-of-town games. The cheer- leaders also took an active part at several assemblies and pep rallies. S. turned out some forty strong. ln his familiar words, Coach Pierce remarked, The material looks pretty green, but maybe welll be able to get a pretty fair team togetherf' And with that, the squad started to work. With seven lettermen returning the prospects for a successful season looked rather bright, but, before the season ended, injuries and Lady Luck had taken their toll. The Red and Gold travelled to Bingo North for their first encounter of the season only to have victory taken from their grasp in the last 30 secondsg score: 7-6. ln their next encounter, the Little Red bounced back and completely out- played a Geneva team, but garnered only two touchdownsg score: 13-O. 'lihe next Saturday, the Little Red gridders journeyed to Nlanlius to tangle with a strong cadet eleven. They fought spiritedly throughout the whole game, but missed on several scoring opportunities and had one counter called back, score: lVlanlius, 24g lthaca, O. Elmira came to Ithaca the following week and fought stubbornly lwl R. through the hrst half, but the Ithacans came back with twin-counters in the second halfg score: 13-O. A highly favored Bingo-Central team came to Ithaca the following week. Playing their best ball of t-he season the Little Red jumped to an early 6-O lead and fought off drive after drive for the next three periods. With a minute and thirty seconds to go, and the biggest upset in the Southern tier in sight, Bingo snatched the bacon from Ithaca and won 7-6. The Orange from U. lf. came to town the next Saturday and took a hard-fought game by the score of 25-6. The Maroon of Auburn broke their jinx the following week by winning from Ithaca at High School field, 19-6. The annual Turkey Day game at Elmira was a battle royal from start to Finish with the Little Red winding up on the big end of a 7-0 score. The team was honored at the end of the season by having their captain and left tackle, Lou Capozzi, chosen all-state tackle. The team chose Don VanDermark and Dan Gallagher to co-captain I. H. BASKETBALL With the transition of the seasons from fall to winter, came the change from football to basketball. Approximately forty prospective dribhlers turned out for the first practice. After 21 Week the squad was cut down to some twenty-odd players. With four lettermen returning from last year's squad, chances looked bright for a highly successful campaign on the hardwood. As the season got under way, the Red and Gold basketeers lost 21 hard-fought battle to Johnson City 48-47, their next encounter, with Cortland, was a 38-27 win. So went the rest of the season, winning thrillers and losing heart-breakers. At the completion of the regular season, Ithaca's basketeers competed in the league playoffs. In the quarter hnals, Ithaca conquered Elmira Southside 47-29. After this, they proceeded to Binghamton for a semi-hnal game with the strong l71l North Indians. After leading for three quarters, the Little Red fell behind in the last quarter and dropped a 45-34 decision. Captain Kayo Augustine, Al Ciaschi, and -lack McGraw were chosen on the tournament All Star team. In Winning 11 out of 19 games, the Little Red fared seemingly well consider- ing their tough schedule in the Southern Tier Conference, one of the fastest scholastic leagues in the state. Dick Sprague was elected captain for the 1946-47 season. Anna Costello was captain of the victorious senior team. In the bowling league we had two beginners' leagues and one advanced league. Bowling lasted for fifteen weeks. 'lihe main attraction of the intramural sports was basketball. Practically every girl with the slightest interest in sports participated. liven those incapable of participating in the active games refereed and helped with other necessary officiating. After the strenuous indoor activities the girls had endured, they were eager to try out some of the sports offered at the field. 'lihese included tennis, archery, softball, and badminton. A new feature, a girls, tumbling club, was added this year. It consisted of twelve mem- bers, and their main objective was to improve their ability in stunts and apparatus work, through practice and with the coaching of lVlrs. Miller. f76l 9 sw: VOLLEYBALL This year's Intramural team title went to the La France team of which the members are Tommy La France, Ralph Saccucci, George Nicholas, Robert Hunt, Whitiiig Ferris, Richard Hunt, and Phil Heidt. Team members are as follows: Cap- tain Phil Heidt, Bob Bradfield, Stillman Brad- field, Dick Bradfield, Bud Deemer, and Don Guterman. BOWLING An All-Star bowling team was picked from the Intramural ranks to take part in the Sec- tionals at Binghamton.
