Now in the United States Army, he contributed much to our school during his four years as a teacher in the art de- partment. In addition to his regular class fwork, he super- vised the actifvities of the I. H. S. War Stamp Committee. But of all the groups in school, none ofwe him more than the Annual staffs for the past four fears, for he fwas in charge of the art work for each of those yearbooks. For his interest ana' help, fciQ's7a'edi'cate the Annual of 10471 to Ray Arnold with sincere thanks and best fwishes. 4' The Faculty Orgy . . . Shut up ! ! you kids . . . Ecard of Zcfucalfrhn This is the Board of Education, composed of representatives of the citizens of Ithaca. They are a hard working lot who devote their time and effort to the welfare of the students in the Ithaca public schools. It is their job to appoint the Superintendent of Schools, to approve matters pertaining to the budget, to determine the school policy concerning public matters, and to promote good public relations. They do much on the behalf of the students and deserve our praise and thanks. Congratulations to the members of the Class of 1944! You have resisted the temptation to leave school during the war years. You have reached the goal of high school graduation. This objective has not been easy to attain, especi- ally as many of you have worked in industry, agriculture, or business on a part-time basis while still carrying your full program of studies in high school. You are richer educationally and our community and nation will be the richer tomorrow because of your wise decision to stay in school until graduation. We are proud of you and confident of your future success. Con- CLAUDE L. Great opportunities for service and leaderships lie ahead of you as you go forth to serve our country until the day of victory, and then in the post-war years, when great problems will need your help in their solution. Left to right: Eileen Kane, Creighton Martin, Mary Hile, Betty Brown. 67644 Gffwm The class of T944 began the traditional round of senior activities earlier than usual. Before the close of school last June, we had elected our class officers Creighton Beans Martin, president, Eileen Ei Kane, vice-president, Betty Brown, secretary, Mary Sis Hile, treasurer. Our advisers were Miss Emilie Brown and Mrs. Nancy Underwood. Miss Thelma Peck took over Mrs. Under- wood's duties the second semester. Very soon after we came back in September, the Annual staff was chosen and the senior committees appointed. Voting on class rings, comparing proofs of senior pictures, planning for the Senior Ball, speculating about Baby Day, going over town to be measured for caps and gowns-these were typical senior activities. Then there were all the other school activities that formed an important part of the year-football, basketball, and baseball seasons, work on the Tattler , club functions-meetings, bake sales, initiations, debates, dances, the Choral and Glee Club concerts, All-State Band and Orchestra, War Stamp sales which enabled I.H.S. to fly the Minute Man Flag, and work on the Service Board. Altogether it was a busy year-and a good one, in spite of such troubles as Regents, complaint cards, detention, and library fines. The year went by more quickly than we thought possible last September, and now in June we leave with a twinge of regret and a soft spot in our hearts for the good old days spent at I.H.S. i 'k Seated, left to right: Standing, left to Betty Forbes, Cecelia Raggl, Lois Sheiiield. right: David Culbertson, Peter Doll. if , , .1 1 4 ,. . Our editors were elected in the last week of September and the rest of the staff appointed within the next two weeks. We then arranged with Tompkins to have our senior pictures taken during Christmas vacation. Faculty, club, and senior writeups were completed by the first of March. In order to add a little variety, this year, we decided to include nicknames and senior ambitions in our Annual. During the first part of April we held our senior poll. The results were kept secret and were announced at the Senior Ball. All that remained to be finished was the taking of informal snaps. Due to the cost of materials the price of the book was raised to 81.50. But in spite of all wartime restrictions, we have worked hard and sincerely hope you'll like our 1944 Annual. Our well balanced interscholastic sports program can be traced back to the efficient work of the ruling body of all high school sports, the Athletic Council. Mr. Dixon, besides presiding over the monthly meetings, is the business manager of athletics. All hats are off to him for he has scheduled contests for the high school athletes, despite the wartime restrictions. The remainder of the council is made up of the coaches of the various teams, the principal, physical education director, and selected faculty members. Its main functions are formulating the schedules, approving the financial matters, approving the election of captains and managers, and the distributions of awards, O -rggt ,K ' X I' f -7 1 .rl-I . These two words sum up the way the football team came through the season so successfully. Their coach, Edward I Pierce, their captain, Dave Culbertson, the veterans and the young hopefuls all had it. Long, hard work went on for a month before the opening game with Johnson City here in Ithaca. The team entered into the fray without great ex pectations but still endowed with courage from the fact that never since 1918 had Johnson City beaten the Little Red. Then came disaster. On a wet, muddy day the Ithacans went down to de feat at the hands of the J.-C. eleven. Slightly outplayed by a score of 9-0 the squad returned to practice, determined to retire for the season undefeated except for the first game. In the next game they were to meet a strong Elmira team for the first of a home and home series. Since 1930, Ithaca had won seven, lost four, and tied two games. It was a decidedly improved and somewhat inspired team that beat Elmira once again, 20-12. Bingo Central was the next team to go down to defeat at the hands of the Red and Gold, I8-6. The next Saturday Ithacans iourneyed to Binghamton and beat the other Bingo team, North, 24-6. The next Saturday found Ithaca again on the road. This time they were in Auburn, matched Ki Youngs' Maroon's who were playing their last game of the season. It didn't seem to do them any good to hope, for I. H. S, triumphed once again, I3-7. i' i' Qaoidall Then Union-Endicott came along. U.-E., always outweighing the I.H.S. teams, had it on Ithaca this year in first downs only. They got 9 to our 4. But the Little Red, taking advantage of all opportunities, turned the tables and won, 13-7, due to excellent ground gaining by the fleety backs. Their last game of the season was the annual Turkey Day battle against the spirited Elmira teams, this time at Elmira. For the second time fate stepped in and snatched a tie or a win from I, H. S. Within a foot from pay dirt the Ithacans were stopped, the game went to Elmira, 6-0. Although the season wasn't completely satisfactory, there were several reasons for it. Among the foremost was the loss of Allen Fogg immediately after the first game. Iniury struck again. This time in the knee of Dave Culbert- son. Captain Culbertsony noted for speed and power, was hurt in the Auburn game and for the remaining two contests was noticeably a hindered runner. The loss of Dom Fiore, co-captain, to the Navy before the season started and that of Bud Thorpe to the Marines in October are two other good reasons for o somewhat uneven record. The lettermen finished off the season by selecting Fred Seither, left half, and Dick Webster left tackle to co-captain the team through 1944 season, Schedule Ithaca Johnson City 9 Ithaca Elmira 'I2 Ithaca Bingo Central 6 Ithaca Bingo North 6 Ithaca Auburn 7 Ithaca Union Endicott 7 Ithaca Elmira 6 f 7 Left to right: Poyle, Seither, Herson, Pogg, L. Badzddad Despite a poor start, Ithaca High's gallant basketeers finished a rugged schedule with a good record of nine wins and seven losses. Many of the games registered in the loss column could have easily gone the other way if Lady Luck had smiled on the locals with any generosity. The Ithacans began with successive losses to Owego Free Academy, Elmira Heights, and Binghamton Central before they cavorted to a 33-25 win over Newark Valley on the familiar hardwood of Boynton Junior High. Immediately afterward, l. H. S. suffered two straight defeats at the hands of Ludlowville and Sayre. Then Joe Tatascore's boys leaped up and left us a record of a six-game winning streak. On February 22, the Ithacans iourneyed to Sayre, Pa. to suffer their worst defeat of the year to a very capable Sayre club by the score of 59-25. 'lr 'k Baakelddl I On Auburn's home court, the Maroons hammered a 36-31 defeat to the Red and Gold. The next two games were factors of an overnight trip in which I. H. S. defeated two strong teams, Cortland and Manlius to end a successful season. lthaca's best performance of the year was at Manlius where Captain- elect Leon Spencer led the attack with 10 points, lthaca's big gain of the year was Capt. Dick Herson who finished the slate with 218 points to his credit. Henry Carrington, speedy guard, was declared ineligible after the first two games, and Joe Foyle left for the Army after the second Auburn encounter. Each of these boys had had previous game experi- ence and their loss was disheartening to the Little Red. Schedule Owego Free Academy ..... ........ I thaca Elmira Heights ........... ........ With Captain Bob Burnham, Allen Fogg, and Dave Culbertson the only remaining lettermen from the team of two years back, Coach Tatascore had to whip up a team in a hurry for the first meet. Being a little weak in the field events, the Little Red dropped its first meet to a strong Bingo Central aggregation, 66-38, at Schoellkopf Field. Determined to do better than this, Tatascore took twenty boys to Geneva where the lthacans looked much better, beating the local lads, 61-34. ln its last dual meet, Ithaca High ranked among the best, beating an excellent Corning Free Academy team, 57-38. Our tracksters also looked good at the sectionals at Schoellkopf Field. Some of the consistent winners were Captain Burnham in the 220 hurdles, Hubert Schickel in the mile, Al Fogg, a converted 880 man, in the sprints, and Culbertson in the sprints and the weights. With many of the boys returning, Coach Tatascore expects a very good 1945 track team. Boys representing the red and Gold in its meets in the following events were: 100 yd. dash-Fogg, Culbertson, Showacre 220 yd. dash-Burnham, Fogg, Dougherty 200 yd. hurdles-Burnham, Holton, Szabo 440 yd. dash-Ferris, Hammond, Janowsky 880 yd. run-Deemer, Spencer, Durling Mile run-Schickel, Hunt High iump-Poole, Guidi, Holton, Durling Pole vault-Hover, Guidi Broad jump-Seither, Showacre, Culbertson Weights-Culbertson, Webster, Blodgett, Martin, Burleson 880 yd. relay-Williamson, Seither or Dougherty, Burnham, Fogg 1:7441 Spade VOLLEYBALL The 1943 volleyball competition was a close race with Captain Ed Van Gorder's team coming out on top in the last match. Things were tied up between Van Gorder's and Captain Jim Spencer's teams, but in this last match the Van Gorder men won. The members of the winning team receiving their numerals were Van Gorder, Barr, Aguilar, Salnbnrg, Miller, and Riker. BASKETBALL The 1943-44 intramural bas' etball league was tied up at the end of the regular loop play between four teams. After the semlilnals had eliminated the other two teams, Captain Di Gacomo's Oshkosh team and Jack McGraw's Peoria quintet battled it out for the championship. In an overtime period Peoria was the victor by a 25-23 count. Members of the winning team were McGraw, Beckhorn, Capozzl, Bloom, Longo, and Hines. Way out in front at the end of the season was Shorty Cardonla's team with 80 points, while ln second place was Joe. Volpicellfs team with 68 points. Both teams were sparked all season by their captains. Johns, Alex, Tarr, Bettucci, and Cardonla made up the winning team. High single game ot' the season was rolled by Bob Riker who hit a 208 game. High total of two games was hit by the same Joe Volpicelll with 366. After the season was over, a mixed doubles tournament was held. This ended up with Brian Nevin. and Jean Campbell as winners. Coach Evrlngham tried to make wrestling a varsity sport, but Ithaca seems to have the only squad in this section. The tournament consisted of all the candidates competing for school championships, in seven different weight classes. An outstanding achievement of the tourney, was the winning of both the 116-pound and 121-pound classes by Dick Hover. Following him in order came Ab Ward in the 1289 Bill Selman in the 1363 Ed Van Gorder in the 1453 Fred Selther in the 1553 and in the heavyweight class, Bob Boda. 4 1 i GMM' 374.0412 What's the score, Helen? . . . Team 5, captained by Corky Johnson, came out on top, with team 2, captained by Jean Keith, in second place. Eileen Kane led the bowlers with highest individual average, followed very closely by Corky Johnson. BASKETBALL Teams this year in girls' basketball represented Sopho- more, Junior, and Senior classes with two other teams, Senior Challengers and Junior Defenders, completing the league. The Seniors, captained by Maude Slocum, won first place by being undefeated all season. After the intramural league play was finished, the Seniors visited Ithaca College to play their senior team and the Juniors also went over and played the freshmen team. The scores greatly surprised everyone. Our Junior team won their game and the Senior team lost, but by a very close score. These games completed a very successful basketball season. PING PONG The underclassmen ran off with the honors in ping pong this year. After successfully coming through the tournament, Elizabeth Fogg and Dora Delibero faced each other in the finals. Winning two out of the three games Dora, a sophomore, came out ahead to be the 1943 ping pong champion. VOLLEYBALL Six volleyball teams made up the league. Games were played directly after school on Tuesday' and Thursday after- noons, and a good deal of enthusiasm was aroused during the season. Team 3, captained by Peggy Weaver, came off the champions and completed their games undefeated. ik i' 76 Whore are the rest, Bob'?.. ,Pntf, puff .... Heave, Dave! ,...
