OllicAli, Never did we expect that this year would go by so quickly, but here we ore ending our last term in high school. Although we have had many trials and tribulations, there is no one among us who will not leave good old I.H.S. without some tinge of regret. Never again will we sit through those tiresome nights of detention or skip classes and school only to end up with a complaint card. We will always r emember the thrill of going to the Senior Boll, of dressing up in our craziest costumes for Baby Day, and of going to the spring play, The Man Who Came to Dinner , which starred our talented Lee Larkin. A more serious note is sounded by the fact that so many of our senior boys are now in the armed forces. To these boys we hove dedicated this book. In electing our officers we have really picked the cream of the crop. Tommy Chin Gainey has been a most capable and popular president, and Eris Olds, our vice-president, has certainly proved her popularity by being chosen Queen of Hearts at the Legislative dance. Jeanne Grover, on outstanding girl in sports, is the treasurer, and versatile Barbara Clines is our secretary. 16 ♦ First rnw. left to rislit : Button. Onterman, Grover. Giithri ' -. FuII.t. The Council consists of one representative and an alternate from each home room, the officers of the Student Association, and members of the vorious standing committees. The Executive Board, made up of the officers of the association and the chairmen of the committees, directs the functioning of the Council. This year the Student Council, under the able leadership of Paul Mclsooc, Bud Brown, Betty Brown, and Eileen Kane, has served as a sponsor for many student activities, including the scrap drive, the football dance, the career conferences, and the second annual Inaugural Ball. The bi-monthly joint sessions of the Senate and the House of Representatives were fea- tured by frequent debates and informal discussions of timely topics, culminating in the annual debate with Legislative on April 15. Der Deutsche Verein has been very popular among the students of German since it was organized in 1905. This year emphasis was placed on a more extensive use of the German language and a broader study of old Germanic culture. The annual Christmas party was held jointly with four other language clubs. Occasional outside speakers helped to make the year a success. 46 The Dramatic Club is made up of students who hove demonstrated unusual acting talent or technical proficiency. Two productions were presented this year, both in the second term. The first was Margaret Cameron ' s one-act comec ' y, The Burglar , featured by an all-girl cast. The second was George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart ' s hilarious comedy in three acts, The Man Who Come to Dinner . The popular acclaim for this latter drama helped to make the season a great success for the club. This year the boys maintained a pig project with some financial support from the Production Credit Association. In April the loan was paid back with a profit left for the chapter treasury. Two of the members. Mollis Hatfield and Richard Walker, were presented the Empire Farm- er Award for outstanding work on their supervised practice programs. 47 Because many of the members had after-school jobs, the Home Economics Club curtailed its program this year. They still found time, however, to sponsor a very successful sale at the Binghamton North game, to make several trips to selected houses in order to study the selection and arrangement of furniture, and to sew for the Red Cross. Several new members were in- itiated at the beginning of both terms, and the spirit of the club has increased with its member- ship. Besides helping with the annual Christmas party which the language clubs held before the holidays, the club has had interesting meetings. Mrs. Chandler, formerly Miss Apgar, spoke at one of the meetings on the direct parallel which can be drawn between the present day situation in North Africa and the days of the Roman Empire and the campaigns which were held there. Besides all this, the long lost constitution was found. At first it was feared that the members would have to write another in Latin! A sale was held in February. 48 Le Cercle Francois offers many opportunities to outstanding French students who hon- estly wish to attain a broader understanding of French customs and achievements, broaden their knowledge of spoken French, and partici pote in social activities. New members were elected into the club and were put into the swing of affairs by entering in on a series of panel discussions. One of the highlights of the year was the Legislative dance which, due to the war, was made informal. The next important event was the Legislative-Congress Debate which we lost. Joanne O ' Heiron reecived honorable mention. Therese Driscoll, who was president of Legislative at the beginning of the year, resigned when she was elected editor of the Annual. Helen Emerson was then chosen as president of the club. 49 Jle (lendef-Voui, Le Rendez-Vous is an organization for students interested in the application of their knowl- edge of the French language and for promoting social functions. Coach Tddie Pierce found himself in a rather unusual predicament. Contrary to Ithaca tradition, he had at his disposal seven of the previous year ' s regulars plus several other aspirants who possessed game experience. The aforementioned predicament existed because of the fact that war time travel restrictions created a rather gloomy outlook for high school sports. Thus Mr. Pierce ' s position was like that of the proverbial man who was ' all dressed up but had no place to go. Nevertheless, September 1 found the high school field as well occupied as ever, at that time of year, with Ithaca gridmen who were as optimistic as was possible under the circum- stances, and despite the war time travel bans the Little Red gridders managed to compete in all but one of their scheduled seven games. Take Opener from Johnson City The team, after three full weeks of practice, learned that the slated trip to the oil city for the gome with Olean would be impossible. Although disappointed by the edict, the ifhacans settled down to re-adjusting themselves for the next game with Johnson City. The Little Redmen hod been waiting five weeks for competition, and this, together with some good ball playing, accounted for the fact that llhaca emerged from the gome on the long end of a 26-6 count. One week after winning the arc-light contest, Ithaca journeyed to Binghamton to engage the Bulldogs of Central. It so happened that rain prevailed on that day and, although the Binghamtonians found conditions to be to their liking, the light Ithacans discovered that it was difficult for them to function on the soggy turf. The final score was Binghamton 27 . . . Ithaca 7. The following Saturday brought Binghamton North to Ithaca for the year ' s first game on the high school field. Playing on home grounds seemed to provide Coach Pierce ' s charges with an incentive, and they fought a much heavier North eleven to a 6-6 deadlock. Gaining experience and momentum as the season progressed, the Little Red encountered Aubuin and handed a 26-6 shellacking to a Marocn team which annually makes the Ithaca gome its season ' s objective. Break Union Endicott Jinx On the next Saturday, Ithaca was presented with the opportunity to accomplish a feat which no team of preceding years had been able to manage. In fact, they had a chance to 61 defeat Union Endicoft on the home grounds of the Orange! They did just that. The final score was Ithaca 6 . . . Union Endicott 0. The Little Red won a bitterly contested battle and thus ended the long life of the U.E. jinx. But even after that encounter, the Ithacans found no chance for rest. Thanksgiving Day brought to Ithaca the Red ' s oldest rival, the Light Blue of Elmira. Ithaca and Elmira have con- sistently staged good games and the ' 42 affair was no exception. Before a capacity crowd, which took advantage of one of Ithaca ' s rare bits of fair autumn weather, the two teams en- gaged in one of the most viciously fought gomes ever played on the local field. In keeping with the nature of the game the final count was 0-0. Taking into consideration the fact that Ithaca had to contend with standing room only accommodations in order to play all four of its road games, it certainly seems safe to say that the season was a successful one. And if the future should find additional hindrances placed on sports, we con be thankful that the cu rtoin was rung down at the end of a good year for Ithaca. As a result of these war time travel bans, the Ithaca courtmen were unable to participate in any of their slated games. Nevertheless, the season was not wasted, for a schedule was eventually arranged which placed the Little Red against teams from communities nearer Ithaca. Although this year ' s opponents were of a lower class than the Southern Tier teams which had faced Ithaca in previous years, the physical benefits de- rived by the players from the gomes was doubtless as great as ever, and, in war time, that must receive first consideration. The Ithaca five got off to a belated start on February 5 when they met the Newfield High School quintet at the Boynton gym. The tilt proved to be a land- slide victory for Ithaca, as is amply shown by the final score, 63-12. Captain Bud Thorpe of Ithaca was high scorer with 15 points. The Little Red dropped its next game to Ludlowville in the limited confines of the L.H.S. gym by a score of 31-25. The following game was a return match between Ithaca and Ludlowville at Ithaca. In this tilt Ithaca avenged its pre- vious loss by reversing the score of the first encounter. Hank Carrington took high man honors in the game at Ludlowville with 10 points, while Thorpe and Jim Pine each tossed in 8 points in the home engagement. The schedule then called for a trip to Trumonsburg for a game with the local high school five. The Ithacans had another field day and emerged with 76 points compared to Trumansburg ' s 23. Dick Herson scored high with 14 points. The season ' s final game brought Trumonsburg to Ithaca, and the Little Red again took the verdict by the large margin of 57 points. The score v as 76-19. The league was composed of 125 players comprising 12 teams. From these participants a team of ten was chosen by Director Tatascore, and this team represented I.H.S. in the City League. The Beavers captained by Alex Humuiock, were the league cham- pions. BASEBALL Typical Ithaca rains plus uncertainty concerning schedule arrangements delayed the initial diamond workouts of the year. The current travel difficulties made it impossible for Ithaca to carry out the usual schedule, but Coach Pierce started practicing and it was hoped that something in the way of opposition would be found. Mr. Dixon and Coach Pierce tried to arrange games with teams from communities close to Ithaca and stated that everything would be done to insure a busy season. LITTLE RED SMOTHERS GENEVA 71-33 Ithaca ' s trackmen engaged in just one meet before the Annual went to press. That meet was with Geneva, and Ithaca was the victor with 71 points. Geneva collected 33. The Little Red took nine firsts out of a possible twelve, Geneva winning only the quarter mile, the mile, and the relay. The next meet on the slate was an invitation affair at Syracuse with schools from all parts of the state participating. A win in this meet is worth working for, and Coach Totascore ' s charges were counted on to give a good account of themselves. The season was to close with the annual intersectional meet at Schoellkopf Field. WRESTLING PROGRAM INTRODUCED This year saw the inauguration of the intramural wrestling program at Ithaca High School. This program was under the supervision of Mr. Everingham, former intercollegiate wrestling champ at Cornell. The winners were: 116 lbs., Dave Barr; 123 lbs., Carl Jordan; 145 lbs., Ed Van Gorder; 155 lbs., Fred Seither; 165 lbs., Bob Boda. 67 Ithaca high school, along with many others, is putting into practice an enlarged intramural sports program to make American girls, as well as boys, better prepared for the hardships they must endure in future years. On these pages you will see examples of various intramural activities in action. BASKETBALL, as usual, is a favorite sport for active American girls. In our school a long practice and training period is en- joyed before class teams are picked. After the teams are formed, a playing tourna- ment is scheduled and the teams play it out for the championship. A hard game between the Juniors and Seniors was enjoyed in the finals this year with the Juniors coming out on the heavy end of the score card. Maud Slocum cap- tained the winning team. Aftor tli.-it li.Tll. Perwec Another point (or the Senior team, Jeanne Jr. vs. Sr., Elizabeth and Muggsy. 68 PINGPONG is speedily becoming a favorite sport activity among girls. This year about thirty girls participated in an elimination tournament with the results exactly the same as last year. Jeanne Grover and Shirley Dusinberre again played for the championship with Jeanne taking Shirley for two out of three games. BOWLING, as you know, a few years ago, was considered no sport for girls. Peo- ple would have quite a time keeping girls away from the alleys now. Each year high school girls flock to the alleys on Monday nights to bowl their best for their teams. You would find such names as Ginger Schoeffer, Eris Olds, Doris McGraw, and Jeanne Grover at the top of the list of high scorers. FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS I.H.S. has main- tained a girls ' athletic field just below Percy Field on Cayuga Street. During the spring and fall competition in archery, speedball, badminton, softball and many other field games is enjoyed. A tennis tournament is also held for girls interested and an award is given to the winner.
