This group is sponsor for all varsity sports as represent- ing lthaca lligh School in interscholastic athletic competition. 'lihroughout the school year this council meets once each month to ratify schedules, election of captains, :appointment of managers, and awarding of insignias. lt also deals with eligibility of athletes, and athletic re- venues. 'lihe membership is comprised of our principal, the coaches of athletic teams, the business manager of athletics, the secretary, the director of physical education, and an appointed mem- ber ol' the facility who acts as treasurer. Wie are grateful to these people for their un tiring efforts in giving us a well-rounded sports program ol which we are all proud. 0 Standing: Randolph, Gregg, lingdahl, Kawsinzin Bottom Row: Farley, Syphax, Krist, Ridley, Thorpe liooml Y-e-a-li lthacal bl .-Mila Nl.-XNACEICRS l7lRlEC'l'URS Ulf Tllli MOB SCICNI 'l'hat's the cheerleaders sounding forth with this year's new yell. 'lihe yell and the new cheering song, 'l'he lfiighting Red and Gold , have certainly pepped up school spirit to a climax. 'lihe entire school attended a pep rally during assembly and cheers came forth so loud the school echoed in return. Several other rallies were held after school to brush up on our old yells and learn the new yells and songs. lfnthusiasm ran high during the basl-cetball and footl-all seasons, thanks to our peppy cheerleaders. As soon as the league games terminated, the kcglers took part in lVlcn's Doubles and bflixcd Doubles 'l'ournaments. Softball was also very popular with the coming of spring. Girls' Basketball was organized according to classes with the seniors taking all honors. Bowling, volleyball, and badminton created untold interest with feminine participants as did rho spring sports, softball, archery, and speedball. i331 '7 As the curtain rose on another school year, it rose, also, on that sport so closely followed by our student body, namely, football. The graduation depleted ranks reported early in September for their first practice session. Captain Ray Tyler, joe Dclsibcro, Bill Bontempi, and Warren Beebe were the returning per- sonnel of last year's eleven. Around these few stellar performers Coach Pierce was able to mold a team which was, in every way, a credit to its coach and school. Facing a strong Binghamton Central outfit in their first encounter, the inexperienced and injury riddled Red and Gold lost a hard fought battle. However, this loss was redeemed on a journey to Clean by routing a previously undefeated aggregation. Captain Tyler dominated the scoring with four touchdowns while Center DeLibero, intercepting an enemy pass, romped to a score from the 35 yard marker. With the exception of a brilliant defeat of a highly touted Scranton Central team in their lirst home stand, the Little Red were continually harrassed with injuries and just plain hard luck, resulting in defeats at the hands of Auburn, Union lfndicott and lflmira. As to the character and ability of this squad, Coach Pierce says: ln many ways l think the 1940 season one of the most successful ever enjoyed hy an Ithaca team. 'lihere were so many real fellows on it. Their spirit, loyalty, and ability to absorb the real purpose of athletics has never been surpassed by any other team I have coached. Scores do not always tell a true story of a season. It is interesting to note that live ol the six teams we played chose Ithaca as the best team they had met all season. To Captain Ray Tyler and all other members of the 1940 squad, l am grateful for your genuine loyalty and friendshipf, 'liheir season completed, our athletes lost no time in electing joe Reed captain of the I9-ll edition nor did they lack any enthusiasm in taking their cue for a long, hard campaign on the hardwood. Brown, llart, Ruane, Reed, Brown, 'l'liorpe f Alter a brief intermission, the stage was soon set lor another exciting basketball campaign. Vllith only a few members of last year's varsity squad available, Coach Pierce liloored an in- experienced but, nevertheless, determined group. Of these few veterans, Captain Jimmy Ruane and Vllarren Beebe were lost to the squad a great part of the season because of injuries. How- ever, the consistent high scoring of Joe Malisenska and the capable play of Dick Brown, Joe Reed, jack Hart, lfarl Brown, Bill Herndon, Roger Olney, and Bud Thorpe kept the Redmen in many ll game. 'lihese athletes entered each game with determination and seemed to improve as the season progressed. Having been beaten at the hands of Bingo North in the early season, the Little Red retaliated by administering a sound defeat in the latter half of the season. Close to ninety hoys came out of hibernation and began to throw and hit the old apple through the halmv ozone with great dexterity. lhen Coach Pierce entered upon the tedious task of choosing the more experienced and ahle hasehallers from his aspiring flock. After many hard practice sessions, Coach fielded a team which more than held its own in fast competition with Binghamton Central, Auhurn, Union lfndicott, johnson City, and Binghamton North. 'lihe veterans Joe Reed, Bill Wzlger, lfarl Brown, black Hart, Grant jones, Joe Knapp, among others, contrihuted their hit to the success of the l94l hall hawks. The high standards set by previous Red and Gold tracksters were ably upheld by an inexperienced but determined squad in a tough schedule, highlighted by meets with Sayre, Geneva, Binghamton, and lflmira. The year was climaxed by the State Sectional Meet at Schoelkopf Field. Joe, as Coach Tatascore is called by his brood, early made the prediction, Witli luck, we'll have a good outfit and a good recordf' and this prophecy was definitely borne out in the events which followed. The team made an excellent showing in all of its meets and was char- acterized by the sterling performance of Capt. Jim Ruane, hurdler, Maurice Waldrori, half-miler, Tom Kane and Adolph Turco, sprinters, and weight-men, Ray Tyler and Bob Rumsey. Doubt- less these athletes will have their names inscribfd on I.H.S. annals of trackdom, along with such stalwarts of the dim and misty past as Chicken', Szabo, greatest hurdler ever to come out of Ithaca High, Beans,' Martini, stellar weightman, Speedster Ben Mintz and many more of .Ioe's proteges too numerous to mention. When Coach Kingsbury summoned his eagerly awaiting tennis team for their daily practice sessions, enthusiasm predominated at the Stewart Park courts as this group practiced diligently. After much hard work hy the coach and his squad, the courtsters were ready to tackle another difficult schedule. Graduation played havoc with last year's team which experienced a rather lean year. How- ever, with the return of the Veterans Jack Slade, George Rogalsky, Don Wilkins, and the addition of freshman Vince Petrillose, holder of the City Junior Title, the team shaped up pretty well. Competing against such stellar opponents as Auburn, Binghamton North, and Norwich, this competent group maintained the high standards ol one of he most consistently, winning teams in our entire sports line up.
