TATASCORE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IN MEMORIAM EEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEN Ye men and maidens, silence! The poet takes the floor, To have his say in a Well-rhymed lay On the class of Thirty-four. Not in the World around us, Nor inthe days of yore, You'll all agree, We ever did see, The like of Thirty-four. Of all the studious seekers For musty learned lore, None with such toil burnt the midnight oil As the grinds of Thirty-four. Of all the liads Who bravely Our I to victory bore, None fought so bold for the Red and Gold As the men of Thirty-flour. Of all the charming las-ses, That grace these halls no more, None bobbed their hair, yet looked so fair, As the girls of Thirty-four. The hour has come for parting, Life beckons at the door, Shall We be glad, shall We be sad, Dear class of Thirty-four? We know not what the future May hold for us in store, But here's goodbye to Ithaca High, With a oheer for Thirty-four. True to our Alma Mater, And loyal to the core, We'll play the game for the name and the fame Of the class of Thirty-four. o. H. B. , 10 EEEEEEENEEEEEE WEEEEEEENNEEEEE FOREWORD EEEEEEEERR EEEEEEEEEEEEE H T is the great excellence of a writer to put into his boolc as much as his bool: will hold. ln this small volume we have tried to concentrate the scenes, events, and personages that have distin- guished this year lirom all others. When, in after years, you turn these pages, may this Annual bring baclc vividly the class ol l93LL. -.,.,5,f 11 WE EEIZIEEBIEEEEEEEEEEUEEEEEN iijLHEEEHEEEliwiiglillillilliIEEElEllQiEElf3llElZlBiElEElENElERlElE5Ql1filEllilXl SENIOR COMMITTEES Pin and Ring Committee Helene Irish ,,,.,,,,.,,,.,,,..,..,,,.,...,.,...............,. . ..........,. Mr. Dean In 1910 the Board of Education organized a council known as the General Council of Ithaca High School. Its duties were to supervise all high school clubs except those that came und-er the Athletic Council. The officers and faculty members are appointed by the Superintendent of Schools. Each club is represented by one faculty member and two students. Meetings are held every two weeks at which time all plans relating to the work and social life of each organization are approved by the council. This year, three new clubs have been accepted as members. They are Le Rendezv- Vous, the newly formed French Clubg the Cinder Path, a track club, and the Varsity Club, consisting of lettermen from the Junior and Senior classes. These, together with fifteen other clubs and organizations, make up the General Council. Miss Ashton Miss Doney M1'. Debating has been seriously studied and we have developed many fine debates. Already we have had an informal debate with Congress and plan to have our formal one soon. Legislative has also enjoyed several social gatherings. In February we gave a reception for the Junior girls. The climax of the club,s activities came with the annual banquet. Varsity, a new organization this year, was instituted with the fundamental idea of entertaining those who had won the I in a major sport. The club also endeavors to foster the spirit of athletics in those who have not participated. An excellent variety of programs has marked the club's first year. Doris Heath Pauline Riley Carol Young James Clark Le Rendez-Vous is a new club, organized in 1933, but ofiicially accepted by General Council at the beginning of 1934. This organization is the result of a need for a more inclusive French club which will accept any students who are interested-except those of the first term and first year-regardless of whether they are honor students or not. Our club activities are concerned with French geography, current events. history, food, dances, literature, music, art, and the etymology of French words. We meet every two weeks, and the large membership testifies to our club's success. It presented a variety show Extravaganza-1934 , which proved to be a huge success. More than one hundred of our high school students participated in this spectacular show. The production was under the supervision of Miss M. Isabel Murray. She was capably assisted by Miss Laura Bryant and Miss Carolyn Marsh of the Music Department, Miss Marion Leary of the Art Department, Miss Claire Lasher of the Home Economics Department, Mr. Elmer Woodams of the Woodshop Depart- ment, Mr. Leland Freeman, Miss Frances Ball, Mi-ss Asenath Van Buren and Miss Madora I. Rumsey. The highlights of the program included the Doll Chorus, shown above, the Wed- ding Ceremony and The Golden Doom. Coach Pierce's eleven emerged victors in every game but two, and those were the tie games at Utica and Lakeland, Florida. Some exciting games, notably those with Auburn and Union-Endicott, were played in the winning of the Southern Tier championship. Players earning letters were Captain Marsella, Ronald Casciotti, William Knight, Hunna John, John Solomon, John Joseph, Louis Daghita, Joseph Smith, Herbert Lyon, August Macali, Raymond Paetow, Frank Howe, Joseph Navarro, Anthony Petrillose, George Abbott, Anthony Ocello, Robert Boochever, and Charles Kenerson. The climax of the season was the 32 - 31 victory over Elmira at Elmira. Syracuse North, a contender for the basketball championship of Syracuse, was handily beaten by the Red and Gold quintet, as were the Southern Tier Champions, Union- Endicott, in the latter part of the season. Although the weather forced the squad to work indoors at the beginning of th-e season, they were later able to work out on ice. The team lost only two games by large scores, and the oth-ers were won or lost by close margins. The boys were led throughout the year by Captain Clayton Smith, and were coached by Richard Crosby. The boys earning athletic insivgnias were Captain Clayton Smith, William Reed, Charles McElwee, Harry Dahmen, William Lee, Ernest Dahmen, Arthur Beddoe, Francis Stillwell, Robert Wiggans, Darrell Brown, and Manager John Wilcox. Barrus and Franklin are leading mile candidates, with Moore not far behind. Alby seems the only 440 man capable of running the distance in good time. Gretzler, L. Gregg, Navarro and Saccucci are the sprint regulars, though Koshkin is develop- ing. Captain Wilkinson is the Red and Gold mainstay in the half-mile. H. Gregg and Johnson, 1933 point winners, are consistent in the high-jump. Stewart, Boochever, and Steve, as pole vaulters, are showing about equal ability, though Steve has ex- tended hifmself into the hurdles where he is trying to fill the task of carrying on in the place of Knight, former sectional champion. Solomon, Johnson, and Macali, all football regulars, bear the brunt of the shot and discus competition. Alby, Gretzler, and Navarro make up the nucleus of the relay quartet, with the choice of a fourth runner, a point of competition. The first competition was with Waverly, at Ithaca, on May 5. A week later the locals traveled to Endicott to run in the En-Joie Health Meet. Ithaca High School was represented in the Penn Relays, April 27-28, by a medley relay team composed of Captain Wilkinson, Alby, Gretzler, and Barrus. -..ggi 89 13.0- EERE! Lacking a strong squad of pitchers and having to face the loss of several outstanding members of the 1933 nine, the local mentor was compelled to develop inexperienced recruits. Some of those who did not return for diamond competition were Bob McNamara, Francis Stuart, Frank Howe, and Dom Rosica. Experienced players who were on hand at the first call were Augie Macali, catcher, Bill McCauley, short-stop, Ronald Casciottil, first base, Joe Navarro, Joe Smith, Joe Perko, outfieldersg and Hunna John, second base. While several candidates reported for mound work, results of early season work- outs revealed scant encouragement for a strong pitching staff. George Hagin and Swartwood turned in fair performances, while one newcomer, Jim Van Buren, ex- hibited a somewhat effective bit of twirling. Hagin and Swartwood, however, had experience on the 1933 squad, and thils fact gives them the call over Van Buren and Francis Hillick, another pitching recruit.
