Racioppo, Jr., Editor Barbara Ann Rosen, Assistant Editor F OREWORD September came and we were on the path of knowledge once again. Only this time it would be a final path for some and a continuation for others. As freshmen, it was new and exciting. As seniors, it was the returning to old ways and old friends but it was the beginning of a very short year. Then, we were ready to continue our course of learningg now we are about to see a new world open up for us. As freshmen, we thought my, how big all this is but soon we learned that it was small, that we were small, but together the two smalls made up one gigantic Big. The memorable Fall and Spring VVeekends, the floats, the rallies and bonfires, the best football game of the season that no one dared miss if they were going to be part of the Big. There we were, a member of that curiosity race called students, What did we do? There were all kinds of things: sororities and fraternities g clubs - religion, service, study, contemplation, and learning as well as plenty of good times and lots of excitement. During its four years at I.C. this class witnessed a spectacular change: the growth of an expanding campus. Many things are dillerent now. Itls hard to remember when we changed, but it happened. The memories will be with us always 5 the friends will remain true. We will never forget the wild antics during rehearsals, nor can we ever forget the time spent in the classroom or the knowledge obtained there. We look back at the long-awaited science and music buildings taking shape and that long winter that couldn't end too soon. So home we go with these and other memories, which will never leave us but will forever enhance our lives. -4-f 'TX I DEDICATION In September, 1948, Earl S. Clarke came to Ithaca as Dean of the General College and Professor of Education. He became Dean of Students in Septem- ber, 1954, and in this capacity he has endeared himself to the faculty and to the students. Along with his background in Education, which is of considerable aid to his students, there exists within him a feeling of sympathy and understanding when dealing with the problems of the students. It is one thing, however, to understand these problems and another to aid in solving them. This he does with willingness and dedication that has prompted the class of 1964 to dedi- cate this yearbook to him -- Earl E. Clarke, Dean of Students. 3 1 , 7 N t 4 I SOUTH HILL CAMPUS , ' , gm- 'Q Y.. . 5 .Y' 4 .Au I- A . Since the in- ception of the chapter in 1901, Delta has graduated over 850 members into the music profession. This year, with over fifty active members, the chapter presented many musical programs. Besides the numerous house recitals presented at the chap- ter house, the fraternity prepares two recitals at the College Music Hall. The frater- nity also sponsors many social events, the highlight being the annual Spring Week- end Banquet. To the men of Phi Mu Alpha, music is the center of their concentration and endeavors in life. This is reflected by the large number of Sinfonians in the musical organizations on campus, as well as in the educational and professional fields. In essence, the purpose of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia can be summed up in these four aims: to advance the cause of music in America, to foster the welfare and brother- hood of students of music, to develop the truest fraternal spirit among its members and to encourage loyalty to the Alma Mater. Under the leadership of Roger Gee, the paper is experi- encing a year of experimentation and self evaluation. In the fall members of the stall attended the Associated Collegiate Press convention in New York City to gain a clear understanding of the purpose of a college newspaper. As a consequence, greater stress was put on the importance of clubs and student organizations submitting publicity information to the Itlzacan. Some reorganization of the staff included naming an office manag- er to start a morg'ue file and naming a correspondence manager to build an extensive circulation program with newspapers of other colleges. Exploration of new printing methods was conducted to find a better, less expensive means of presenting student news and pro- viding a greater range of positions for students with talents other than the ability to write. VARSITY BASEBALL Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca SCORES from SOUTHERN TRIP Michigan State Pembroke East Carolina East Carolina Newport News Newport News Ithaca College completed the 1963 baseball season with a 17 and 3 won-lost record. There were many factors which contrib- uted to this fine season. Dick Rockwell and Don Fazio led the Bombers at the plate with .468 and .458 batting averages respeotively. Fazio, who had the second highest batting average on the team, led the squad in the home run department with four. The team batting an amazing .333, is an indication of the teamls power at the plate. This was a team not only blessed with hitting, but it also possessed a very strong defense. Roger Freize led them in pitch- ing with a 5 and 1 won-lost record. One of the highlights of the season for Ithaca College was George Strickland's no-hit-no- run-no-error ball game in which Ithaca was only able to score one run. Strickland, who was used primarily for relief, compiled a .53 earned run average. Many feel that I-thaca was slighted when they lost a bid to the section 2 playoffs to Penn State. However, the ball club was not slighted when it came to selecting the E.C.A.C. All-Star Team. Don Fazio, the teamis outstanding third baseman was selected to the first team. Battery mates, Rockwell and F reize, were selected to the second team. Tom Vogt received an honor- able mention at second base. These are only a few of the rea- sons why Ithaca once again ranked high in the collegiafte base- ball world. 151 Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca Ithaca REGULAR SEASON SCORES 4 9 8 0 9 26 5 9 0 1 25 18 St. Jol'm's Army Seton Hall Coast Guard Holy Cross C.W. Joe Biddy ran the half mile in 1:57.7 to break an Ithaca ,College record of 2301.8 that was in the record books since 1951. Co-capt. Buddy Brooke put his name in the Ithaca College track team. He gained a first place for Ithaca every time he entered the 100 yard dash and was defeated only once in the 220 yard affair. High- jumper Gary Gregorka and shotputter Leroy 'Green were also quite consistent in their events. One fact that cannot go without mentioning is the 'etirement of head coach Isadore Doe Yavits. For nany years he served as a very capable leader. 1963 Varsity Track Results Won 3 Lost 5 Ithaca 99 Hartwick 41 Ithaca 108 Harpur 23 Ithaca 62 Rochester U. 641- Ithaca 74 U. of Buffalo 75 Buffalo State 24 Ithaca 64- Alfred 75 Ithaca 7th in state meet at Rochester 15 Schools Ithaca 57 Cortland 1 16 Oswego 1 Ithaca 86 Roberts Wesleyan 51 Ithaca 67M Brockport 872 CROSS COUNTRY , :sf Ithaca 56 121 16 25 25 36 18 x. After an opening game loss to highly rated Temple, Ithaca rolled over Kings, Brockport, Cortland, Montclair and C.W. Post. Gene Monje was the leading point producer, tallying 66 points via 11 touchdowns. Other high scoring Ithaeans were Len Muhlick, Bob Glazier and Sam Curko. The team totaled 208 points to their oppon- ent's 76, and virtually outclassed all adversaries. Post-season awards included Sam Curko's nomination to the First team on Williamis Small College All-American. Gene Monje also re- ceived honorable mention for the same squad. At least eight exhibitions were slated as well as home and away gymnastic meets with various colleges. For the most part, the exhibitions have been given at public schools in Ithaca and the surrounding area, which has done much to create good relations for the college. Co-captain Ed Sliwinski, competing in all six Olympic events, sparked the team on to a successful season. Coached by the well experienced Bob Denoncourt, the Ithaca College 1963-1964 Gym- nastic Team enjoyed an interesting and resourceful year. Several of Ithaca College's outstanding seniors competed in the Eastern Regional Gymnastics Tournament at Penn State during the first week of March. 168 GYMNASTICS SCORES Won L1 Lost 41- ITHACA OPPON 35 M Cortland 58 U.S. Merchant Marine 123 Cortland 120 Slippery Rock 99 So. VARSITY WRESTLING The Ithaca College Wrestling team, after a poor start, came alive to show its true potential. It lost the first four matches due to the absence of some of its outstanding members. Orlando Iacovelli missed the first three maftches, when one more 'bomber, would have been the margin of victory. In the fourth match there were three starting grapplers missing from the lineup. In this match one more win would have turned the tide. Since then the bomber assault has been supreme. Blaze Iuliano and Orlando Iacovelli have been outstanding for the bomb- ers this season. Blaze, who has bowed only three times during his college career, lost two of these outings to Jim Nance, the defending NCAA heavy- weight champ. Along with Blaze and Orlando, Ithaca College has several other hopefuls in this year's 4-I tournament in Cleveland. 170 SCORES Won 7 Lost 4 ITHACA OPPONENT 9 Wilkes 17 16 Clarkson 18 3 Syracuse 25 14 Lock Haven 20 18 Cortland 1 1 17 Brockport 14 21 Hartwick 10 26 R.I.T. 10 18 Mansfield 1 1 19 Buffalo 14 18 Oswego 16 fits 171 ROW I: G. Under the direction of Mr. George Moore, the 1963 Hockey team was molded into a strong contender in the Finger Lakes League. Considering the team is still in the formative stage, its record of 4 wins 9 losses and 1 tie was very re- spectable. Among the outstanding players who came of age during the season included: Bill Miller, Tom McHugh, Jeff Hibbard, Tim Ragan, and Captain, Pete Reilly. Although the loss of Jeff Hibbard will be big, the remainder of the squad will return much improved and experienced next year. ROSE OF DELTA SIGMA PI DANCE The Rose of Deltasign contest originated at the suggestion of Beta Xi Chapter at Rider College at the sixteenth Frand Chapter Congress in Minneapolis. The first contest was conducted in the 1947-48 college year. Each chapter selects their own Rose of Deltasigu from among the coeds at their university, and her picture is submitted to the central ofhce. On the local level, Delta Lambda chapter tries to keep the contest on a strictly beauty,' basis and away from the popularity contest which is typical of many contests found on most campuses. We do this at Ithaca by having the girls them- selves pick the original candidates for the contest. Each dormitory selects a certain number of girls, which usually totals about Hfty. The co-chairmen, through the use of pictures and personal discussion, then cut this group down to twenty semi- finalists. A cocktail party is then held at which the twenty semi-finalists and the brothers attend. This gives the brothers a good chance to meet and get to know all of the candidates. An election is then held and the list is reduced to five finalists. From these live, one girl is selected as Delta Lambda's Rose for the coming year and then her name is submitted as a candidate to the national con-test. The winner, together with the second and third choice are announced in the May issue of the DELTASIG. She is then presented with an all-ruby badge of Delta Sigma Pi, which is suitably engraved and ordered especially for her by the fraternity. 180 .r mb donlt know how many fires wc'll put but wc're a happy crew!
