But large enough to prepare us for the world. Our college is set among the beauty of nature. Constantly — yet quietly — reminding us of our forefather ' s basics. There is nothing fancy or flashy about our campus. Which represents our understanding for confronting all problems with the eternal hope of a solution. li ■■■wmm kit; ; it : ' CSKJMrE«mi. - lSK 4 ' i% - S :,.. We are a college filled with realistic dreamers. Looking for that seemingly unattainable goal. We all work togeth er on each task that presents itself. Prompting us to live by the code: I became us . . . and us became we . . . and finally we became one ... and we are ITAWAMBA. Duane Cross Opening 5 A Flash of Free Time 6 Opening Open dorms provided students with the opportunity to unwind from their stressful study habits. Water-skiing has become a popular outdoor event as this co-ed shows off while slaloming. Stacy Rakestraw takes time out to phone home. Trevanda Vasser looks over the Homecoming ballot before casting her vote as Rusty Knight awaits his turn. Linwood Landroth concentrates on his studies before the big test. Free time among students is valued as nearly priceless. Class time may range from eight in the morning until after three in the afternoon, so the evenings are treasured for catching up on the day ' s happenings across campus. Among the activities students enjoy include in- tramural sports, pool shooting at the Student Center or one of the area pool halls, relaxing in front of the tube, athletics, catching up on the next day ' s lesson, or spending time with that special one. Opening 7 Practice Makes Perfect The desire to excel is vital in the preparation for perfection. Although total perfection is not possible, practice is essential for striving toward that ultimate goal. At IJC, perfection is a goal of each student whether academically or in athletics and extends much further than that actually. Competition between students brings out the best in individuals therefore urging them toward the top. Practice may not make perfect, but if we practice long enough or hard enough, fame, power, life, and fortune have all named themselves a star, and will enable you to, too. Melissa Freeman puts much concentration into the preparation of a painting in art class. As a member of the All American Band, Wendy Andrews focuses on her music while trying to get her fingers synchronized. A member of Kaleidoscope, Douglas Williams caresses the ivories at the piano. Just a gigolo . . . Mary Ellen Bishop prepares as a member of the flag corps. 8 Opening Some students go head-over-heals for cheerleading. In this case, Candy Harris works on a flip during cheerleading practice. Students on the Tupelo campus debate on the placement of a bolt while working on an enpjne. Kaleidoscope practices before putting on one of their many con- certs throughout the year. Sophomore David Poss says, Hey, look at me, as he poses for the camera before football practice. Freshman pitcher Scott Collier released a pitch during a fall baseball contest. IJC is definitely a college on the way up as students learn by us- ing computers in the library and Technical Education Building. Opening 9 Mary Davis combines the latest in jeans with a sweater for a casual look for class. Carla Williams soaks up the sunshine in a splash of bright yellow and black. Itawamba sweatshirts provide comfort for Yolanda Cun- ningham, Janice Brown, Lisa Cunningham, and Rebecca Parker which leaves no doubt that Indians are the best. Frank Pruitt and Elsie Moore are Looking good while resting in front of Lee Hall. A Hawaiian, big print shirt is Darryl Winstead ' s ticket to the Monster Mash. The oversized bag is just right for the many necessities for a busy student. 10 Opening Flashy Fashions Sparkling in more than one way . . . Fashions of ' 85- ' 86 provided just the right spark for classes, that special date, the big game, cruisin or fun on the Tenn-Tom. From the everyday look of denim to dressy, Itawamba Junior College students shone. With dress as different as each individual, accessories added to the total look . . . Straw purses — the bigger the better — held needed items. Stone- washed jeans in stripes, checks, or blue and black alternating patterns on front and back were trendsetters. Great-looking sweaters in every color of the rainbow and oversized shirts made their mark with big, bold designs. Wide gold chains sparkled in the sun. No matter what the fashion . . . IJC . . . you looked mahh-velous. The Modeling Squad stars in fashion shows throughout the year. Debbi Coggins ' gold chains shine in the sunlight. Denim provides the basic wardrobe for IJC students, Cindy Towery and Justin West. Fashion conscious, Missy White and Ken Todd spend free time bet- ween classes. Relaxation is great after long hours in class if you ' re dressed for the occasion. Opening 11 Jamie Gunnells, Frankie Yielding, and Cheryl Cockrell delve into the realm of science. Glenda West, instructor, guides Steve Hensley, and Missy Loftin through a biology lab. Billy May discusses the finer points of radiologic technology with Pat Daneils. Robotics technology utilizes sophisticated equipment to give students on the Tupelo Campus the most up-to-date instructions. Brenda Edmonson gives Randal Waycaster a few pointers in the new computer lab housed in the Learning Resource Center. 12 Opening A Brighter Future Dreams and goals become a part of a bright future. Whether plans include a career or fur- ther education, tomorrow ' s dreams begin to- day . . . Climb high, climb far, your goal the sky, your aim the star. Ideals are like the stars. We never reach them, but like the mariners on the sea, we chart our course by them. The ' 80 ' s are packed with excitement ... a glowing new age of technology ... of lasers, robots and computers ... an electronic era where super machines re- quire their programmers to be highly skilled individuals. More sophisticated business and industry seek out the most quality personnel in a highly competitive market. It ' s an age where the real world is more than just a dream. It ' s making sure all the pieces of the puzzle fit to make a total picture — in- dividuals shining with pride in where they were and how far they ' ve come . . . No star is ever lost we once have seen. We always may be what we might have been. Perhaps poet Joe Darion says it best . . . To dream the impossible dream. To reach the unreachable star . . . Opening 13 The IJC dancers add the heat at the bonfire prior to Homecoming. The Indian baseball team drums up support for Homecoming. Dormitory students showed their spirit in the sign competition during Homecoming week. 14 Opening sparkling Spirit Indian Spirit was in full force this year as students had the opportunity to back an excellent sports program. The Tribe football team knocked off nationally ranked Gulf Coast and Northwest en route to a national ranking of our own. Students also cheered basketball, baseball, Softball and tennis squads in what proved to be an excellent year on campus for the avid spectator. IJC students reflected spirit through pep rallies, dorm yells, and game chants which led our teams to victory. Indian spirit spreads through the crowd as IJC beats another foe. Sophomore Marvin Marsh turns upfield en route to a big gain against Northwest. Mascot Sherry Collier cheers the Indians on to another victory. Freshman Suzie Shackleford brightens the evening at the Homecoming bonfire. Opening 15 Andrea Hussey reflects upon the completion of a homework assignment. Being comfortable makes studying a little easier for Scotty Hopkins. The Learning Resource Center is one of the central spots where minds spring into motion. Tupelo Campus students discuss the programming of a robot. 16 Opening Students in various technologies including diesel, distribution and marketing, health sciences, and automotive prepare for careers in the sophisticated ' 80 ' s ... a time of complex equipment that takes superior skill and knowledge to program ... an exciting period in which many challenges shape the minds of all those who enter the job market in any capacity. Delta Epsilon Chi FRT 57 58 Chieftain Chieftain Incorporates Worlc and Fun The Chieftain is IJC ' s bi-monthly newspaper publication composed of students currently enrolled in Principles of Journalism or sophomores who were previously on the staff. Although the basics of news reporting are taught during classtime, there are times when all seriousness is thrown out the door. Generally staff members have between 8-11 days in which to set up interviews, take notes, organize their thoughts and turn in their finished copy. Laying out the paper itself is where all the fun begins! From setting the type, making corrections, and placing the stories in just the right spot the process of laying the paper out never has a dull moment. Headlines are the final step in the process — and probably the hardest. Using a noun-verb in a few-word headline is more difficult than most imagine. ' Jk . The staff is composed of students in- terested in design and lay-out of publications. Coming from various backgrounds, the members of the staff must combine and pull in one way — toward the very best possible yearbook. The yearbook is broken into many dif- ferent sections, and students take what they feel is best suited for their talents. Beginning with blank lay-out sheets the staffer designs a two-page spread with blocks for pictures, copy (writing) and captions along with a headline. Getting the just right picture for the page is the next step. Staff photographers cover the events in the hope of capturing just the right moment. But, cropping pictures, drawing up pages, writing copy, typing copysheets, and making pictures aren ' t all that ' s in- volved with yearbook production. A yearbook is made up of individuals — those whose pictures are found within and those who work long, tough hours to record the year ' s history. Although deadline times were hectic, personalities of the staff solidified to become one unit, more like a family. To the outsider, though, the publications area probably resembled a zoo with peo- ple working all over the floor. Most of the time inspiration came between bits of pizza and swapping dialogue with each other. Despite the different environment, the staff came together as one to produce the latest star on the horizon . . . the 1986 Mirror. 72 Mirror l i c (row 1, 1 to r) Sonya Baulch, editor; Tina Baker, Kim Rackley, Karen Gardner; (row 2) Adelia Marcy, Patti Presley; Duane Cross, Marti Harbor, editor; Pat Scely, Sandra Bailey. 73 Mirror MIRROR STAFF AT WORK AND PLAY 74 Mirror •M tMtt .-. s sfjst ' Mirror 75 76 Modeling Squad SQUAD IS MODEL GROUP Tryouts at the beginning of both semesters selected members of the Modeling Squad. Citing the return of twenty two players from last season ' s dismal 4-6 team, Coach Mike Eaton predicted a winning season for his IJC Indians in the 1985 pigskin season. Led by quarterback Mitch Eubank the Tribe looked forward to opening the season against East Central. Following a hard-fought 17-16 battle against East Central the squad faced Mississippi Delta, coming out on top in a 21-14 game. Next in line was Copiah- Lincoln Junior College of Wesson. Traveling on the road for the first time of the year, IJC dropped a 7-3 heartbreaker to the host Wolfpack. Returning home to face East Mississip- pi for the annual Homecoming game, the Tribe unleashed their offensive attack enroute to a 14-7 victory over the Lions. Pearl River was next on the agenda, and as the Indians did in their first road game of the season they dropped the game, 28-17, leaving the Indians over-all record at 3-2 heading into the second half of the schedule. The annual rivalry between IJC and Booneville ' s Northeast Jr. College Tigers took place on campus, giving the Tribe the crowd factor advantage. IJC claimed bragging rights to the area with an impressive 24-13 win and in the pro- cess upped their district record to 3-0 before facing Holmes. The Indians downed Holmes to run their district slate to 4-0 and looked to take on 1 ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast. The national ranking of the Bulldogs did little to sway the Tribe ' s morale, thus giv- ing the Tribe the momentum to pull out a 14-10 upset. Northwest followed MGCJC and the Indians for the second week in a row downed a nationally-ranked squad, this time trimming the Rangers, 17-13. Following the Indians ' win over North- west, IJC was placed among the elite by obtaining their own national ranking at number 14. The Tribe finished its regular season with a 37-7 thrashing of Coahoma before entering the play-offs against Cophiah- Lincoln. IJC dropped the play-off game 21-18, finishing the slate at 8-3. On the strength of IJC ' s overall showing. Head Coach Mike Eaton was named Coach of the Year among his peers. 100 Football Coaching Staff Leads Indians to Victory IJC Head Football Coach Mike Eaton has been at the helm of the Indian football program for 10 years, with only one losing season to date — that being the 1984 campaign. Married to the former Marcia Mauney, Coach Eaton has two children, Laura and Mallory. They make their home in Fulton on IJC ' s campus housing for faculty. Coach Eaton graduated from Mississippi State University in 1972 with a major in Administration. He participated in sports while at MSU, playing football. Before coming to Fulton and IJC, Coach Eaton coached at Ripley High School in Mississippi, where he served as Assistant Coach. Coach Eaton joined the Indian Coaching Staff in 1974 as an Assistant Coach in charge of defense. In 1976 he was promoted to the He ad Coach position when Ben Jones stepped down. In 1985 Coach Eaton led the Indians to an impressive 8-3 overall record and an appearance in the state play-offs. On the strength of the Tribe ' s showing. Opening the 1985-86 season hosting the Brewer State Bears of Fayette, AL, the Indians were led by freshman Roderick Jones ' 16 points but couldn ' t overcome a 19-point halftime gap and ended up losing the game 71-60. The Tribe split their next four contests; the Indians downed Meridian 83-78 in a comeback bid; Mary Holmes downed the Tribe 95-92 to drop the slate to 1-2 overall; Jackson (TN) State was next on the agenda and Mississippi State transfer Tommy Boyd poured in 24 points to lead the Indian attack in an 83-75 IJC win; the Indians fell to 2-3 following an 87-78 set-back at the hands of archrival Northeast Junior College. The Indians ' record slipped even further down before a late season surge brought the squad ' s overall slate to 9-10 following the Coahoma game. The Lady Indians effort was centered around eight sophomores while six freshmen also contributed im- mensely to the program. Coach Roy Cresap ' s squad was led by Rich Smooth Wingo, Jimbo Byars, Jeff Morrison, and Jack Moore. The team was comprised of 15 sophomores and 10 freshmen look- ing to gain valuable experience for upcoming seasons. Five members from this year ' s team gained scholarships to senior colleges to pursue their athletic talents. They were Jim Byars, pitcher. Delta State; Richie Wingo, second base. Delta State; Anthony Berry, centerfield. Rust College; Richard Williams, catcher, Livingston University; and Mitch Hamm, second base, Livingston University. The squad finished the season in third place, only a game from the play-offs. I still have to pinch myself sometimes to make sure I am not dreaming. These are the words of IJC ' s sophomore shortstop Jack Moore as he was in- formed, Friday, January 17, that he had been selected by the Houston Astros in major league baseball ' s winter draft. Moore, who batted .315 for the Tribe in the spring and .397 in the fall, credits most of his success to Coach Roy Cresap. Without Coach and Mrs. Cresap, I couldn ' t have done it. They have meant more to me than anybody in my life. Moore said. I also think that if it were not for sophomore teammates and good friends, Keith Johnson and Bum Hastings, pushing me and just being there to pick me up when 1 fell, I probably wouldn ' t have had such a chance as this. Moore said. Moore credited his success mostly to God, because if it weren ' t for Him, none of this would be possible. 128 Sports Colleges Recruit Indian Football Squad Sophomores Members of the 1985 Indian football squad caught the attention of several university recruiters following a successful season. O. Benjamin is pleased with the progress of Itawamba Junior College in his 13 years as president, But we still have a long way to go. He predicts an optimistic future during which he would like to see continued im- provement in instruction — for IJC to expand its services . . . Learning, he notes, is the main goal of Itawamba Junior College. I want the students to receive the skills, knowledge and wisdom that would enable them to be successful in their chosen career. President Benjamin enjoys public in- volvement — working with people — which leaves very little time for relaxa- tion. I especially like to see people ac- quire the skill and knowledge that will enable them to be successful. And he has devoted his entire career to that philosophy. From science instruc- tor to school administrator, Benjamin has been a vital force in the educational pro- cess of many youth in Mississippi. He attained Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees at the University of Mississippi. Benjamin and his wife, the former Doris Sneed, have one son, Kent, who resides in Austin, TX. President Benjamin has been a part of Itawamba Junior College during 13 ex- citing years. I ' m happy. It ' s a very rewarding experience. Dr. W. O. Benjamin 140 President Dr. Benjamin relaxes with wife, Doris, in the President ' s home on campus. Many hours are spent in contact with other education officials across the nation. Receiving a check for the IJC Foundation from bank official, Gary Walker, is one of President Benjamin ' s more pleasant tasks. President 141 Administration W. F. Sidewalks were widened or replaced, and extensive overlaying of streets and parking areas made driving easier for students and staff. The project fits into a long-range landscape plan which is currently being studied by college officials. Additional projects included the installation of storm drains and work in the dormitory parking areas. The land- scaping of islands also was planned for future completion. Other work on the Fulton Campus contributing to the new look were re-roofing of the Arts Building and the Physical Education classroom. Bleachers were installed at the baseball field to provide seating for 200 Indian fans. The Fulton Campus was a busy place last summer preparing that new look — a facelift which added a little comfort for IJC students and staff. 204 Closing Closing 205 206 Closing SOPO Dream Comes True Traffic — many times bumper-to-bumper — crawled across the Tombigbee River on old Highway 78 as an army of ants marching single file. But today that sight is history. A dream that started many years ago as a seed in the minds of the nation ' s leaders is now a reality. The Tennessee- Tombigbee Water- way, blasted partially from Itawamba County soil, some of which forms the perimeter of the Fulton Campus, sparkles in the sunshine with the freshness of beginning. Reflections of the water stir memories of old Highway 78 that was relocated for the sturdy link between the Ten- nessee and Tombigbee Rivers and the Gulf of Mexico at Mobile, AL and the other obstacles that stood in the way of progress. With the final completion of this historic waterway came many changes throughout the area. Many people had the opportunity to see their hopes fulfilled and their dreams come true, while still others realized that something good was just over the horizon. The barges, the yachts, and the fishing boats that daily take advantage of Northeast Mississippi, experiencing its beauty like Huck Finn on the ' Mighty Mississippi, ' ap- preciate the progress of the waterway and those who work- ed for its completion. It ' s like a dream . . . attainable only if you ' ll reach for it . . . and catching the unreachable star. Closing 207 Editor ' s Closing What began as a dream in the summer of 1985 has now become a reality. We met as complete strangers wondering if together we could organize a yearbook. Once we got to know each other we found we had many of the same ideas. First of all, we developed a theme that would be expressed throughout the Mirror. We then designed a cover to sym- bolize our theme, When You Wish Upon A Star . . . The staff met and the yearbook was divided into sections. Staff members selected the section they felt best suited their ability. The entire staff worked together in accomplishing the dream that started on a hot summer day at yearbook clinic at Ole Miss. Many thanks are due many people . . . Ms. Donna Thomas, our advisor, who has been the bright spot of our year, and we will never forget her unending humor and her unfailing sup- port. Without her guidance and encouragement, we would not have been able to publish this yearbook . . . Mrs. Arlene Riley, for all of her hours spent in the darkroom . . . and Mr. W. E. Boggs, for his moral support. We would also like to thank our staff who has truly been a delight to work with, and we gratefully acknowledge their time and dedication. We hope that the Mirror reflects the memories of IJC in 1985-86, and as you turn the pages that those special times will be a part of you forever. We hope, also, that through this yearbook in some way you realize that having a dream and wishing on a star can both come true, if you sprinkle your life with enthusiasm and determination just as we did. If you try hard enough, your dreams will become realities just as ours did in this 1986 Mirror.
