Benjamin, third Pres- ident of Itawamba Junior College, this year was awarded a new four-year contract by the Board of Trustees. Before coming to IJC in 1972, Dr. Benjamin taught junior high and high school math and science. He also was an elementary, junior high and high school principal and assistant superin- tendent of schools. Dr. Benjamin often has said that he is interested in education. His interest in Itawamba Junior College is evident. During his eleven years at IJC, several new buildings have been added to both campuses. Many new programs are now meeting the educational needs of the residents of the five county district and preparing them for the technology of the 1980s. Benjamin said some of the most satisfying experiences as President of IJC are the diversity of activities and working with the people in the district. Helping people acquire skills that will enable them to get good jobs, Benjamin said, and helping students experience things that will enable them to be successful are most rewarding. Benjamin has a Bachelor of Arts in education degree, Master of Educa- tion in school administration, Master of Science, and Doctorate of Education from the University of Mississippi. He is married to the former Doris Sneed. They have one son, Kent, who lives in Austin, Texas. I am looking forward to continu- ing working with the people in the five-county area, outstanding board of trustees, real fine faculty and just tremendously outstanding students, he said. . . . And thank you, Dr. Benjamin, for your interest in Itawamba Junior College Dr. W. O. Benjamin 46 lnstructlon Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Dr. Benjamin has served as president of IJC since July 1, 1972. Since that time IJC has grown tremendously. Mrs. Doris Benjamin serves as Coordinator of Library services on both the Fulton and Tupelo campuses. Under the direction of Mrs. Benjamin the libraries have become more advanced and more fully equipped. Dr. Benjamin and his secretary, Mrs. Ann Pate Dr. Benjamin talks with students. This is a vital part of the growth of IJC. Irutructlon 47 Administration Fulton Tupelo Director of Vocational - Technical Education and Tupelo Campus Dean of Instructional Affairs William M. IJC has a very select group of men and women who make up the faculty ... a faculty who cares about each student as an individual. The faculty is not only student-oriented but they are also well-qualified. Many hold doctor ' s degrees and all have training or experience beyond the B.S. degree. They are well-qualified to help the student adjust to college life and make important career decisions. lnttruction 71 Clones Classes 73 Sophomores-Fulton Mitzi Adams, Fulton Yvonne Adams, Tupelo Steven Aguirre, Tupelo Lamar Aldridge, Okolona Scotty Allred, Tupelo Elizabeth Angle, Fulton Cynthia Armstrong, Belden Rick Armstrong, Fulton Tanya Armstrong, Verona Russ Austin, Tupelo Sandy Avery, Smithville Wendell Bafford, Okolona Joe Bailey, Tupelo Debbie Baker, Fulton Glenda Baker, Amory Leslie Barrett, Saltillo Pam Barrett, Mooreville Keith Baxter, Amory David Beachum, Hamilton, AL Debra Bean, Fulton Anita Beasley, Tupelo Donnie Bell, Fulton Gayla Bell, Amory Lisa Bennett, Pontotoc Sonya Benson, Fulton Michael Berry, Pontotoc Chris Biffle, Pontotoc Cindy Bishop, Marietta Phillip Bishop. They sponsor several dances throughout the year to raise money for charitable donations to various groups. In February, Black History Month, they conduct special programs to promote black awareness. Occasionally, the group has speakers from senior colleges that do not ordinarily recruit at IJC to encourage and advise the students. Organizations 1 IS Chieftain The Chieftain, IJC ' s newspaper, is published every two weeks throughout the school year. The volunteer staff consists mostly of Journalism I students , who gather story information during lab day once a week. Staff members try to cover all areas of college news and get input from the students through the student opinion poll. This year the difficult job of typesetting the Chieftain was made a little easier with the arrival of an MCS computer typesetter in the Publications department. Typesetters Donna Thomas and Kim Steele can now complete this task more efficiently and much sooner. Once their job is done and the pasteup work finished, the Itawamba County Times prints the papers, and they are distributed over the campuses for students ' convenience. Many of the older buildings were torn down to make room for the more modern buildings that are still being used today. The Student Center, the Phillip Sheffield Auditorium as it is formally named, was the first building to be completed under this modernizing program. Approval for the Tupelo Vocational-Technical Complex was granted in April, 1963, and opened in 1966. Crubaugh served until 1972. Dr. W. O. Benjamin assumed the job of President July 1, 1972. Benjamin, a native of Pontotoc county, has helped to bring about the construction of the Technical Education Building, the Health-Science Building, the Fine Arts Building, and several of the dorms. Benjamin is also overseeing the construction of the new football stadium. Thanks to hard work, IJC is getting bigger and better.
