Did you ever think that members of the IJC faculty were once students, too? Well, they were. They took exams, and flunked tests, and complained about homework like everyone of us. But they got through it — somehow — lik e we will. The average member of the IJC faculty is only 37 years old, but has been teaching for about 1 4 years. On the average, they have also worked beyond the requirements for a masters degree. Faculty members have put in a lot of hours learning skills that gave them a 4.24 overall excellence rating on a scale of 1 to 5. It was the IJC students who gave them this rating in the spring of 1977. Sheffield, Mildred Social Sciences Smith, W. R. Instructors at Itawamba can also afford more time for students because the size of the school is smaller than that of most senior colleges and the atmosphere is more intimate. The young people at IJC do not have to be computer- ized, but can be friends and helpers to the people who make up the col- lege ' s faculty and staff. 34 z m r 1 1 s V Sij Af k ■•- ' ' 1 ■ 1 Tupelo Campus Administration (clockwise) Mr. William Jaggers, Vocational-Technical Director; Mr. John Burkes, Director of Continuing Education; Mrs. Mavienne Hanson, Health Occupations Supervisor; Mr. Don Hanratty, Director of Experienced Based Career Education. 35 (clockwise) Mrs. Margaret Mason, Director of Resource Center; Mr. Max Munn, Director of Student Services; Mr. William Mattison, Director of Experience Based Education; Mr. William Lowery, Supervisor of Special Vocational Education. fA ■ .ir ' - i ■d 36 J 1 r ' ' yU: kC •1 t ' .t - ' i ' i r J k f ' 1 K.ja ?MI ■ £Z3 i m ■; ' Ss?S m P .aa ' - ' slM r V ■ i}i fm 1(1 ' %■ W M li k w ip ll H JSSBSw m Tllh„ 1 r 9 ife g|« Tit ' ' ifl 1. , P B 1 01 H .ii 1 1 i (clockwise) Mr. Mac Allen Thomas, Administrative Assistant to Director; Mr, Wylie Wood, Supervisor of Adult Education; Mrs. Pat Sistrunk, Director of Instruction; Mr. D. They wrote some of their goals down for us — the things they want to do, the things they want to accomplish. First, they want to help students find out what they want from life, how to get it, and then give them the confi- dence to reach for it. Second, the IJC staff tries to teach the things that will make the American economic system work for the stu- dent. They give them an education in the skills where money is being made at the present time, and where it will probably be made in the future. Third, IJC wants to instill in stu- dents the belief that learning doesn ' t end when a person stops attending classes. IJC believes that a person is a part of everyone he has met and is touched by everything he sees. Every moment can be a bright, exciting learning process if a person is trained to see it as such. Every day can be a glowing frontier says the staff at Itawamba, and every moment the fulfillment of a dream. 39 40 The Coming Classes IJC had 233 more students going to classes in the fall of 77 than it did the past spring. When next autumn comes there may be even more students fill- ing the classrooms and the bleachers in the football stadium, and relaxing in the student center. The Itawamba Junior College fac- ulty and staff are prepared to prepare even more young minds for the rug- ged world that will lie ahead of them. The teachers ut IJC smile — and accept the challenge. 41 SPORTS : :A yH ' - IMf «:i ; ■.i?i !r:ma SV _ es o o « Editor: Gail Horton i ' sfii. iii -t j . vsr ,.: ,: ,.. .. There won ' t be any Boston Celtic bonuses or Pacer pay checks. And what for you Frances? A few more years of scholarship? Maybe. For all of the girls of the 1 977-78 IJC girls basketball team, what will there be? 58 - Special Thoughts Sounds funny, but there ' ll be a lot. There ' ll be nights in southern sub- division houses ... or afternoons on the patio at Carmel . . .or a mornings view from the window of a 52nd Street, New York apartment when the days at Fulton will come back so clearly, and so will your best friend ' s smile. . . within your mind there ' ll be a scrapbook of photographs, pictures of little Mississippi towns you passed through in the afternoon and night, and the clock running down on your last game. . . it ' ll all be there, it will all be yours, and you will be a part of all of us . . . 59 Basketball . . . boys basketball . . . here you are, playing junior college basketball for IJC . . . winning and losing . . . while the radio broadcasts your games as you go all over the state to run the hardwood . . . but where did it start? and where have you climbed to? and have you reached the summit? Band members know that in music, practice makes perfect, or at least very, very good. The IJC Band did a lot of practicing this year. Through the long days of autumn they could be heard, working long hours in the deep green hollow that lies beyond the college. They marched on rainy October after- noons, and in humid August mornings; they played on strongly when the Indians were losing to Pearl River, and rang with victory in Jones County. To the top right are the band ' s standouts. These musicians made the Mississippi Junior College All- State Band. At the middle right is the Jazz Band. iOUD 86 Auxiliary Adds Sparkle Twirlers: Lynn Manns, Arlene Beard, Theresa Christian, Carol Sprayberry.
